Racing News

Another week has passed us by and tonight we see four heats of the SA Sprint Championship. The depth is more than handy and we get to see the return of the Kenny Gill sprinter, Ernie Bung Arrow.

Race 1 and we kick off with an interesting race and I have gone with the well-credentialed Zulu Spear out in box 7.  He has been in good form since arriving from WA and will be hard to beat with his pace. Add in Rocket To Excel and Lotsa Fun Gunn for the placing’s. Box up 1.2.4.7.

Race 2 and Dakota La Flash looks a good thing from box 3. The youngster has won her past 2 here in good fashion and will lead this for a long way. Add in Sheza Diva and Rebel Kist. Box up 1.3.4.8.

On to the 3rd and this is a toughie. Put them in a hat and have a pick. I have gone with Fiery McBain. He is more than capable when on song and is drawn to run a cheeky race from box 2. Box up 1.2.3.5.

Race 4 and if you are going on form then it is hard to go past Off My Trout. He carved out a BON 29.94 here last start and is drawn to win. Tyson Willow has the red and will be kicking up along with Nicholas Jack who is no slouch. Box up 1.4.5.8

The first of four heats of the Sprint is race 5 and I have gone with the book ends Noble Kahn and Kenso Karoo. Both are in form and are boxed for a bold showing. Cosmic Way is the class runner but is tardy early. Box up 1.2.7.8.

Fire Tyson is in good form and is drawn for a bold showing in race 6. He returned to form with a 29.95 win here and will only improve. The inside brigade can punch up and figure in the trifecta. Box up 1.2.3.6.

There looks to be three main chances in race 7 and I have tipped the red in Wonder Whirl. She has been racing well in easier company and has the early pace to win here. The main dangers are Dee Dee Corsair and Bogie Magic. Box up 1.2.6.7.

Race 8 and the final heat of the Sprint and we see the return of Big Ernie. By all reports he has been trialling well at Sandown and will relish the draw.  Returning home to his home base he should win.  Add in Victa Scott along with Bogie Prince and for value Sidney’s Shadow who is very smart when on the bunny.  Box up 1.3.4.7.

The ninth and Dream Choice looks a good thing from box 8.  She loves the trip and will ping and win and should prove too good. Box up 2.3.4.8

Race 10 and the Petar Jovanovic kennel can get a double with Animate. She has been racing well but is a little hit and miss on box rise but her class should prevail.  Box up 4.5.7.8.

We go home on an open affair with race 11. When in doubt go for the draw and that is Junta Bale, he has been in good form without winning but can break through here for Lisa Rasmussen. Add in Power Merc who struggled last start, but looks the improver. Box up 1.2.3.7.

SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS

Tonight we have four heats of the SA Sprint Championships for SA trained greyhounds and it features a very strong line-up of sprinters including Group 1 Adelaide Cup winner Ernie Bung Arrow who returns to SA after a few weeks in Victoria. The listed Feature Final is worth $15,000 to the winner and  will be run next week (16th January) which carries a total purse of $22,000.

The first heat of the SA Sprint Championship is Race 5 on tonight’s program due to start at 8.08pm (SA time) and looks to be a very open affair, even though there are only 7 runners. The Cameron Butcher trained speedster Right Time looks to be nicely drawn in box 2 and should be able to get a nice run in to the race with Noble Kahn from box 1 expected to lead. Cosmic Way for Bill Wudarczyk is the interesting runner who has been almost unbeatable over 600m recently however only ran third last start over 515m. He has won here in a flying 29.62 and is one of the most talented chasers in the State. Noble Kahn as mentioned should lead and has been getting stronger with each run highlighted by his solid win last start and has to be considered. The form of the likes of Kenso Karoo, Victa Sam and Gilbert Allen suggest there are plenty of chances in tonights first heat of the Sprint.

The second heat is Race 6 and also has plenty of chances however it is hard to go past last years winner Fire Tyson who looks to be right back to his very best after a super win last start. Box 6 shouldn’t worry the Tony Lagana trained star as he has won from all boxes at Angle Park with 25 wins to his name at the venue. Seasoned campaigner Encosta Kahn for Kathy Johnstone literally knocked himself out on the first turn last start after finding trouble and crashing to the track and its great to see him back and racing. He has been one of the best in the State in recent times and cannot be taken lightly. Strathalbyn Cup winner Victa Victoria is in red hot form along with Galilee Spirit who looks the early leader and with the highly promising Regal Looper drawing perfectly in box 1 this heat looks a great contest.

Heat 3 and the Gawler Cup winner Bogie Magic for Ben Rawlings looks hardest to beat after drawing box 7 in another strong heat. He should be suited out of the 7 driving forward on the first turn and if he is anywhere near them down the back can certainly run over the top of them. Wonder Whirl for Mike Giniotis has drawn perfectly in the red box and did win here three starts back in a slick 29.86 from the same box.

If she led then she would be hard to catch however with the speedy Sienna Bale out in box 4 she could upset some of her more fancied rivals as she has brilliant early speed. Top chances to Dee Dee Corsair, Dyna Hakon, Chemical Maker and the up and coming Wild Soul for Kim Johnstone who ran home in unbelievable sectionals last start at Gawler to win easily.

The final heat which is race 8 due to start at 9.11pm will see the return to SA racing of superstar Ernie Bung Arrow for trainer Ken Gill. He has come back to SA just for this series before heading back to Victoria to chase the riches there. He has drawn box 7 tonight and has never been lead at Angle Park in his 17 runs here so we can expect to see him in front early. Ernie has had a month away from the track so if there is a chink in the armour it could come over the final 50 meters however his brilliance should carry him home. Victa Scott for Ron Schadow has won his last three starts and looks a danger from the red as he is very strong along with Bogie Prince for Ben Rawlings who has made the step up to open company without too many troubles. Youngster Sidney’s Shadow for Cameron Butcher takes on open company for the first time and even though he has been the beaten favourite at his last four starts did rattle off a 29.64 victory here in November highlighting his ability.

The first two placegetters from each heat will qualify for next weeks listed Final with the two fastest third placegetters declared reserves.

The box draw for the Final will take place on track after race 8 tonight. As a bonus for punters TattsBet have provided a Trifecta Jackpot on Race 8 tonight worth $8,978.

GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH – DECEMBER

Greyhound of the month for December was Ernie Bug Arrow for trainer Ken Gill. In a very tight month of voting he got just over the line ahead of Right Time for Cameron Butcher and Kalden Gambino for Troy Murray who both had very good months of racing.

Ernie’s dominance of the Group 3 Brian Johnstone series and win in the final on December 5 in a sizzling 29.66 was the deciding factor. The rich $25,000 to the winner final was his only run for the month before being sent to Victoria and the care of Kel Greenough. With him not settling in too well and trialling only fairly at the Meadows his Interstate campaign was put on hold.

At the end of the month his career record stands at 18 starts with 16 wins and 1 placing, and earnings around $150,000.

RUN OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER

Run of the month for December was Ernie Bung Arrow for trainer Ken Gill. The son of Lochinvar Marlow and Slipper’s Tonic showed sensational speed at Angle Park on Thursday 5th December to score an impressive victory in the Brian Johnstone Final.

Ernie began brilliantly from box 6 to lead his rivals easily in a slick 4.36 to the winning post on the first occasion. From there he opened up a big lead down the back with a 16.80 second split before racing home for a comfortable 9 length win in a sizzling 29.66 for the 515m journey.

TREATMENT BOOKS

With the new rules regarding Treatment Books being introduced from the 1st January it is recommended that all trainers keep a documented history of all treatments for each of their greyhounds as per the new rules. GRSA has been in the process of assisting trainers with specific treatment books however they are still being finalised and should be available early in the new year.
