June 2022 | Victa Grosso

Greyhound of the Month for June was Victa Grosso for trainer Tony Rasmussen, highlighted by his fantastic win in the time honoured Shane McQueen Final over the middle distance at headquarters, where he dominated a high class field in early June.

The son of Fernando Bale and Victa Victoria had five starts for the month with four wins, showing his potential over the middle distance. He started the month off with that breathtaking win in the Shane McQueen Final where he won by over 4 lengths in a sizzling 34.06 for the 595m. He then had two starts at Gawler over the 643m where he won on both occasions by 5.25 and 8.75 lengths, in the brilliant time of 37.19 and 37.25 respectively. Victoria was next on the agenda in a lead up to feature races, so Rasmussen headed to Sandown for a 595m event on a Sunday where Victa Grosso impressed with a 34.45 win over the 595m in winning by 2.24 lengths. His last run of the month was an unlucky 5th in a Heat of the Group 2 McKenna Memorial also at Sandown, where he lost no admirers.

May 2022 | Springvale Max

Greyhound of the Month for May was Springvale Max for trainer Gavin Harris, highlighted by his brilliant win in the Group 3 Howard Ashton Final in late May. 

The locally owned and bred son of Barcia Bale and Springvale Bryne had four starts for the month with three wins and a second in a great month of racing. He started the month off with a solid second in a Breeders Prelude Final before he set himself for the Howard Ashton. He won his Heat by 6.50 lengths in 30.38 and then repeated the does in the Semi-Final winning by 3 lengths in 30.50. He started a strong second favourite in the Group 3 Final and produced a brilliant performance to chase down He’s All Purpose in the shadows of the post to win by almost a length in 30.42.
At the end of the month Springvale Max’s record stood at 38 starts for 19 wins and 10 placings and earnings around $59,000.

April 2022 | Mallee Magic

Greyhound of the Month for April was Mallee Magic for trainer Tony Rasmussen who claimed enough votes for the monthly award due to his brilliant month of racing, highlighted by victory in the 50th Anniversary Cup Final at Angle Park. He just edged out SA Distance Champion Weblec Star, Group 3 Mt Gambier Cup winner Departure Gate and Eastar Match Race winner Fantastic Victor in a great month of highlights for SA greyhounds.  

Mallee Magic returned to the race track in early April after a 6 week break and returned in fine form running 30.65 over the 530m at Angle Park on a Monday night. He then stepped up to the 595m in a heat of the Easter Cup dominating his Heat with a strong win in 34.25 and started one of the favourites for the Final. Without much luck he ran 5th and then dropped back to the 530m to challenge the best sprinters in the state for the Heats of the 50th Anniversary Cup. Mallee Magic was brilliant in winning his Heat running a sizzling 30.22 and winning by over 4 lengths in a high quality field. With $50,000 on offer for the winner Mallee Magic quickly raced up on the pace to challenge for the prize, Mallee Magic proved too strong over the concluding stages to go on and win in 30.32. Mallee Magic had five starts for the month with four wins returning to his very best form which did see him claim the SA Derby back in September last year. At the end of the month Mallee Magic’s record stood at 28 starts for 14 wins and 5 placings and earnings around $117,000.

March 2022 | Fantastic Victor

Greyhound of the Month for March was Fantastic Victor for trainer Ossie Chegia in a tight month of voting the son of Fernando Bale and Fantastic Dotty came out on top, just ahead of Mr. Ticket, He’s All Purpose and Victa Grosso. 

He had five starts for the month with three wins and two-thirds showing speed and stamina in all his events. He started the month off with a blistering 34.06 win at headquarters over the 595m before the Heats of the Group 3 Murray Bridge Cup. He won his Heat in good fashion before a solid third placing in the Group 3 Final. He came back to Angle Park for a third over the 595m before a slick 30.22 win over the 530m in Free For All company at headquarters. 

At the end of the month Fantastic Victor’s record stood at 58 starts for 25 wins and 16 placings and earnings around $80,000.

February 2022 | Stout Monelli

Greyhound of the Month for February was Stout Monelli for trainer Tim Aloisi making it a three peat of awards for the son of Barcia Bale and Corona Monelli, after he collected the December award last year and the January award this year, with his track record performance over the 595m at Angle Park the highlight of this month.

He had three starts for the month with two wins and a third placing, setting the month alight, kicking off with his track record performance. He stepped up to the 595m with much anticipation and he didn’t disappoint leading all the way for a 6.75 length win in 33.68. He then backed that up with another strong win over 595m in winning by 5.25 lengths before a good third in open company rounding the month off.

At the end of the month Stout Monelli’s record stood at 50 starts for 27 wins and 15 placings and earnings just under $235,000.

January 2022 | Stout Monelli

Greyhound of the Month for January was Stout Monelli for trainer Tim Aloisi, making it back to back awards for the son of Barcia Bale and Corona Monelli after he collected the December award, his highlight performance in January being a dominant display in the SA Sprint Championship Final.

He had three starts for the month with two wins and a fourth place. He started the month off with the fourth in a Heat of the listed SA Sprint Championship and some thought he was a touch disappointing, however, after drawing box 1 in the Final he showed his true class. He pounced on the early lead and from there was never headed running a brilliant 30.19 for the 530m journey in winning by 1 length against the best sprinters in the State. He then rounded his month off with a slick win on a Monday night at headquarters running a flying 30.15, equalling the second fastest time recorded on the track over the 530m.
At the end of the month Stout Monelli’s record stood at 46 starts for 25 wins and 14 placings and earnings just under $230,000.

  1. Current Members of the 2021 SA Greyhound of the Year (GOTY) Judging Panel are Todd Gray, Grant Stewart, Tim Edwards, Josh Evans, Matthew Herrmann, Shaun Mathieson and Greg Barber.

  2. After each calendar month of racing, each panellist will be asked to vote for the SA Greyhound of the Month (GOTM) by nominating a 1st choice (4 votes), 2nd choice (2 votes) and 3rd choice (1 vote). The GOTM is to be SA Trained.
     
  3. Votes are tallied and a GOTM winner is announced. In the case of one or more greyhounds having the equal highest number of votes, they will be named equal winners for that month.
     
  4. All GOTM winners, including equal winners, will be considered when the GOTY Judging Panel selects the finalists for the GOTY. The panel may consider other greyhounds that may not have won a GOTM for the GOTY finalists. To be eligible for GOTY, a finalist must have been domiciled and trained in South Australia in the year of the award for a period of not less than 120 days.

  5. When casting votes for the GOTY, the panel is to pay particular attention to all South Australian race starts, but also take into account achievements out of the state in that year.

  6. The race records and achievements for the year of all GOTM winners and relevant other greyhounds will be sent to each member of the Judging Panel prior to the selection of GOTY Finalists. Panel members may request greyhounds to be included in the list for consideration.

  7. A meeting shall be convened of the GOTY Judging Panel at which the panel will be asked to select five finalists to be included for voting purposes to establish the GOTY. This meeting will also select Finalists for the SA Distance GOTY, SA Sprint GOTY and SA Bred GOTY.

  8. The names of the selected finalists and voting slips and envelopes will be sent to each member of the Judging Panel.

  9. Members of the Judging Panel will be asked to cast their votes by nominating a 1st choice (5 points), 2nd choice (4 points), 3rd choice (3 points), 4th choice (2 points) and 5th choice (1 point) and place the voting slip in the envelope provided and return.

  10. Once all votes have been received, the CEO of Greyhound Racing SA, Racing Manager and Integrity Manager will open the sealed envelopes and tally the votes (1st choice = 5 points, 2nd choice = 4 points, 3rd choice = 3 points, 4th choice = 2 points and 5th choice = 1 point).

  11. The greyhound with the highest number of points will be named GOTY. In the case of one or more greyhounds having the equal highest number of votes, they will be named equal winners.

  12. The GOTY winners’ name/s will be announced at a function on a date and at a venue to be determined by Greyhound Racing SA.
