Angle Park Preview - Friday 17th January 2014

17/01/2014
Racing News

Tonight’s meeting looks a terrific one on paper.  With the Friday night on Sky 2, due to a shocking week of hot weather, might be a bonus for a punter or two who wouldn’t normally have a wager at Angle Park. Adding to the exciting night of racing we have 7 heats of the John Gray Memorial.  Don’t forget the Sprint Final which is Race 8 on the card, and it is a pearler!!

Race 1 and Victa Sam can give this a big shake.  He isn’t the quickest box dog in the race but he is strong.  Off My Trout and the well drawn Rocket To Excel all look good chances.  Box up 1.3.5.6.

Race 2 and I have gone with the in-form sprinter in Set The Scene.  With 4 wins on the trot he should lead and win again.  There are a heap of chances to fill the placing’s.  Box up 1.3.4.6.

The third and Petar Jovanovic has a handy one in Animate.  She has the perfect draw down in box 1.  Don’t leave out Tercel who is a big chance if he steps.  Maysoon Kahn has good early pace.  Box up 1.2.4. 7.

Race 4 and High Status has returned to form with a 30.03 win here last start from box 1.  He does like a wide draw and will give this a big shake.  The other dangers look to be Book Of Shadows who will be running on along with Victa Victoria.  Box up 2.4.6.8.

Kalden Gambino has the pace to lead and win from box 1 in the fifth event.  He can carve out quick times when on the bunny and will be very hard to beat.  Kaylarikki will be running on strongly and will be right in the finish.  Add in Zulu Spear who found trouble last start.  Box up 1.2.4.6.

The sixth race and jump on Flying Tee.  He won here last start in 30.15 and needed the run.  Shaka Kahn is well drawn down in box 1 and will be right in the mix.  Box up 1.3.4.6

Race 7 and there are several chances but the form of Suntory Gold should be enough to get her across the line.  Bringing up a double for the Laurie Cahalan kennel.  Nicholas Jack is on the improve.  Box up 3.4.5.8.

The Sprint Final and Ernie Bung Arrow will start the short priced favourite and should improve with another week back at home with his mate Kenny Gill.  The big dangers are Fire Tyson who won here last week in a BON 29.64.  Don’t leave out Bogie Magic who will be carving across from out wide.  Box up 1.3.5.8.

Race 9 and Proven Juddy looks a good thing as he can lead and win from box 3.  Wild Soul and Token Spinner, will be running on late.   Box up the inside four - 1.2.3.4.

Race 10 and Pandora Kist is back in grade and has the perfect draw of 1 but she has to step up and return to her best form.  I like Doona Bale who is a last start winner over the 600m and she will be charging home.  Box up 1.6.7.8.

The last on a Friday Night of racing and get on Hairy Bear.  He is a worry early but with a clear run will take a power of beating.  Cash Train has the pace along with Jack and Lolli.   Box up 2.6.7.8.

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

2014 SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL

The fastest qualifier for tonights final was the Tony Lagana trained speedster Fire Tyson who blistered around the Angle Park circuit in a flying 29.64 for the 515m journey. He has been in terrific form recently and showed his class with sectionals of 4.39 and 16.79 in leading throughout from box 6 and defeating Encosta Kahn who stuck on well by 3 ½ lengths. He has drawn box 5 tonight which should not worry him as he has shown a liking to the middle boxes recently.

The Bill Wudarczyk trained Cosmic Way who showed his true ability will a brilliant win in a slick 29.75. After beginning well from box 7 he surprisingly landed second leaving the front straight on the first occasion just behind Noble Kahn and from there with his strength and power he was always going to be hard to beat. He exploded past Noble Kahn turning for home to go on and record a solid win by 3 ¾ lengths with the Kathy Johnstone trained Noble Kahn hanging on for second and giving her two tonight.

Last years Gawler Gold Cup winner Bogie Magic for Ben Rawlings show his class with an all the way victory from box 7 in a handy 29.90. He enjoys the wide draws and has been helped out tonight with box 8 and looks one of the main players for the Sprint Championship. Bogie Magic defeated Wonder Whirl by 4 ½ lengths who ran home well after finding trouble during the run and continues the excellent run that young trainer Ben Rawlings is experiencing with his team of greyhounds.

The anticipation was electric for the final heat last week with SA’s champion sprinter returning to the track after 1 month in Victoria. Ernie Bug Arrow captured the hearts and minds of all greyhound supporters last year with his brilliant win in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup and last week after having a month of racing there was some thought that the Ken Gill trained star could have a chink in his armour. Those fears were put to one side when the champ ran to the front at the winning post on the first occasion with another brilliant beginning. The up and coming Sidney’s Shadow was in hot pursuit down the back however “Ernie” kicked away and did enough to hold on and win in a sizzling 29.78 with Sidney’s Shadow running brilliantly for second only 1 ¾ lengths away at his first crack in open company. Ernie has drawn box 3 tonight and again looks the leader and with further improvement also looks the one to beat in what is shaping as an outstanding race.

The $22,000 Listed feature is race 8 on tonights program and is listed to jump at 8.59pm (SA time).

The Final field in Box Draw order is:

1.  Encosta Kahn                           Kathy Johnstone

2.  Woner Whirl                             Mike Giniotis

3.  Ernie Bung Arrow                      Ken Gill

4.  Noble Kahn                              Kathy Johnstone

5.  Fire Tyson                               Ossie Chegia

6.  Cosmic Way                            Bill Wudarczyk

7.  Sidney’s Shadow                     Cameron Butcher

8.  Bogie Magic                            Ben Rawlings

9.  Victa Sam (1st Res)                 SCR

10.Victa Scott (2nd Res)               SCR

JOHN GRAY FINAL NEXT WEEK

It will be a huge night of racing next week (Thursday January 23) at Angle Park with the running of the $6,875 Final of the John Gray. This event is for Grade 5 greyhounds over the 515m and has always been well supported by the Industry with 7 heats programmed tonight. Who will join last year’s winner Grainne O’Malley, on the honour roll for this year?

A special mention to the AGRC who again are supporting the John Gray Final in 2014 and have been great supporters of this race for many years. Special thanks to local racing identity Ron Johnson who kindly donates a trophy each year for the winning connections.

SEPARATION OF GAWLER TO START AT END OF JANUARY

The separation of Gawler will now be introduced towards the end of January. GRSA and WA had been working at getting the Gawler meetings separated into Provincial 1 and Provincial 2 however the data flow to NSW for formguides and race books and information to the National Data Repository has not been completed. With the Christmas break in these States work will not recommence until the middle of this month.

With the introduction of separate grading at Gawler the Grade 6 rules were considered for change via the Grading Review Panel which was published in last months kennel capers. With most of separate grading details finalized it was discovered that the Grade 6 greyhounds were going to be much worse of than before with no more “beat the grader” and a high number of greyhounds needing to be withdrawn from engagements due to being ineligible if they won. The Grading Review Panel by email reconsidered this information and believes the fairest change to Grade 6 with the separation of Gawler was to allow the two more wins at Gawler for SA Bred greyhounds at the other Gawler track and 1 more win for Non SA Bred making a maximum of 4. There will be more specific details published in this months kennel capers and I want to thank the Grading Review Panel for their correspondence.
