Worm Burner Sires 5 Winners At Angle Park
Former South Australian superstar Worm Burner is making his mark off the track, this week siring half of the winners at the Angle Park race meeting on Monday night. Worm Burner progeny took out 5 of the 10 races, which included star sprinter Coorong Lucy who returned to the winner’s list in devastating style after a recent injury layoff.
Worm Burner pups have been dominating the local racing/breeding scene this year, with the popular South Australian superstars in sprinter Coorong Lucy and stayer Sir Truculent leading the way. Nationally, the likes of multiple Group 1 finalist Mister Harlewood have demonstrated Worm Burner can throw pups of the highest quality.
Worm Burner has sired 365 winners locally up until the end of November, with Snakebite Bale second on the list with 26 winners, and will likely go past 400 winners by the end of the year. On a national level, Worm Burner currently sits eighth on the metropolitan sires list with 212 city winners for the year.
Owners of Worm Burner, Cameron and Yvonne Butcher took the approach of initially giving away services in South Australia to their superstar sprinter, to get pups on the ground and create interest around a new sire. This could be an inspired decision, as Worm Burner appears to be one of the most exciting stud prospects in Australia.
"Worm Burner has done a remarkable job as a stud dog. He tends to throw strong dogs, from sprinters to middle distance to stayers and is very versatile in that sense." Cameron Butcher explained.
Worm Burner finished his career with 48 wins from 83 starts, collecting $380,000 in prize money which included the Group 1 National Sprint Championship at Angle Park in 2016.
"He still loves to run, free galloping every day in our paddock. I believe he could still win races if we decided to race him!"
The efforts of Worm Burner on Monday night come just days after another local stud dog Jury sired the winner of Group 2 Queensland Derby at Albion Park.
