WOMEN TO THE FORE

The fairer sex of the training ranks had a big day out at Gawler greyhounds on Tuesday when they scored 8 of the winners on the 11 event program. And one had to travel a few hours to achieve that result.

Race 10 on the program, The Bunyip Stake over 531m, saw Danyo’s Delboy (8)away the best and he immediately tried to cross to the rails. Victa Brooke (4)was also away well, leaving the two greyhounds to battle it out for the lead for some distance.

Into the back straight, Danyo’s Delboy was able to cross and get away by 3 lengths, with Lektra Train (5) running into the picture. Danyo’s Delboy still held the lead and Lektra Train was not able to go on with it’s run, while Fluer Bale (2) and Paua Is Lethal (1) continued to run into the picture.

In the home straight however Danyo’s Delboy maintained his advantage and went on to win untroubled by 4 lengths in the time of 31.37 secs. Fluer Bale was second for Wendy Matcott of Murray Bridge with Paua Is Lethal finishing third for Troy Murray of Two Wells.

Danyo’s Delboy is trained by Kellie Watson for husband Noel. Their property is at Danyo, a dot on the map near Murrayville in Victoria, just over the border from Pinnaroo. While they are predominantly farmers, the Watsons breed and retain all of their own stock to race. They have had considerable success as all 7 in this litter have raced and won. Between them, the litter has had the good result of winning over $130 000.

Noel has been involved with greyhounds for a long time, following on from his father Ron, who raced many handy greyhounds in SA, all with the “Danyo” name. Kellie and Noel had a break from greyhounds for a while, but now have a second litter from the mother of this litter, plus 9 other pups, in addition to the 4 racing dogs. And how does Kellie cope with the 4 hour trip to Gawler? It is something you have to do, but a win makes it worthwhile.

The other women who enjoyed the limelight on the day were Wendy Matcott scoring with Bob Bale and Allen Namor, while fellow Murray Bridge trainer Lisa Rasmussen also had a double with Dyna Queachy and Individualise. Angaston trainer Paula Hearnden led in a double with Long Gully Mark and Long Gully Tese. Not to be left out of the picture Kim Johnstone, took out the last race with Aston.

Racing is on at Gawler again on Tuesday afternoon, with the next Sunday twilight being on the 8th December.
