Welsh lands a terrific treble at The Bridge
Friday (One-Turn)
As the one-turn took centre stage on a pleasant Friday afternoon at Murray Bridge, it was Bronwyn Welsh who enjoyed a monster afternoon, landing three winners for the meeting.
The highly talented Kruger Lass reaffirmed her love for the big one turn track, with a powerful victory over the 530m trip. She stepped well enough from the inside and down the back was sitting in a close third on the rail. Around the turn, she burst to the lead and she was never losing after that as she went onto win in a slick 29.71.
Kruger Dawn then took out the next race over the 455m trip, with an all the way 25.59 effort from box seven. The promising Rustic Kruger then completed the trio and made it three victories in three races for Brownyn, when he made the most of box one over the 455m journey.
He jumped well but had to work hard to hold the lead on the rail. Once he held his spot in front, he was in no danger, as he came home strongly to win in 25.48. The drive from Mildura, where Bronwyn is based to Murray Bridge is three and a half hours, so it’s fair to say that this trip was worth it!
Another trainer to have a great afternoon was Don Turner, who has been landing a few winners lately and he picked up another double for his efforts on Friday.
Who Knows Darren was first and he had his first look at the track from box seven over the 395m distance. He came out well and handled the wide draw beautifully, staying up the track early. It didn’t take him long to work to the lead and it was relatively easy for him once he got there, as he strolled home in a fast 22.22, which is a great time for a Juvenile race.
Under Siege then made it two when she proved far too strong for a grade 6 field over the 530m trip. She wasn’t the quickest away from box eight, but she just worked through her gears before launching in the straight and powering home to win in a 30.00, which is also a very handy time.
Dog to follow: Undoing - Returned after a lengthy spell over the unsuitable 395m distance for him but ran an eye-catching race. After being burnt off early and finding himself last, he worked to the rail, before storming home, going down by a length and running a fast 22.27 himself. That run shows he’s certainly come back in good order and he will take some beating wherever he lines up next!
Tuesday (Straight track)
On a terrific day weather wise, we had twelve races up the straight.
Barry Jones picked up a winner for the afternoon, with Slipper’s Appeal winning nicely in a grade 6 heat over 300m. After jumping well from box two, she found herself with a narrow lead. She held the lead until the 100m mark, where she was headed by a couple of challengers and appeared to be in trouble but on the line she fought back and won by a small margin in a very handy 16.81. That win made it two from two for her up the straight, so she likes the track!
Lester Harris doesn’t have too many runners at Murray Bridge, but he had one in the form of Drive The Jack, who just so happened to make the trip a winning one! From box four in a competitive grade 6 field over the 300m distance, he came out well and found the front early. He looked a bit green halfway up and lost his place, getting shuffled back to the rear and seemingly having no chance. Despite this, he rallied and started to work his way back. With the line approaching, he made a late dive and got up in a thriller! The result was a 17.15 victory, with five of the dogs finishing within a length of each other. A great race and a terrific effort from Drive The Jack.
Dog to follow: Aston Garner - Ran an absolute ripper on Tuesday, nearly turning over the raging hot favourite for the race in Federal Flash. From box five, he jumped well but received an early bump, which cost him a length. Despite that, he chased valiantly the whole way up, going down by a length in a fast 16.73. A repeat of that will have him winning up the straight very soon!
