TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

The weather is warming up here in Adelaide and so is the racing.  Tonight we see a sprinkle of interstaters engaged along with several trialing between races for the upcoming Oaks and Derby events.  We can’t forget the Macro Meats Adelaide Cup so we all need to watch and put them in the black book for the coming weeks.

Race 1 and we see 3 interstaters engaged and they all have a big chance.  They are in very strong kennels but I will lead off with a local who won on debut here last week and that is Lukey Deez from box 1.  He won in 29.87 from box 7 and is drawn for a bold showing again. Kiltah Magic has a very big motor along with Wind Whistler.  Add in Texas Titan and Farmeroo for the Trifecta.  Box Up 1.2.3.7 in a fantastic opening event on a strong 11 event programme.

The 2nd and it’s all about the box draw.  Grande To Excel looks the improver from the rails draw.  He should be able to kick up and run a bold race.  Long Gully Mark has the form on the board and has the pace to overcome the middle draw.  Madison McLaren will be running on along with Chilli In White.  Box Up 1.3.4.8

The 3rd and Spicy Peppa led here last week but was run down when second in 29.86.  She can bounce back and return to the winners circle for the Butcher kennel.  Krakow McLaren is in form along with Cool And Black.  Box Up 2.3.5.7

Race 4 and the Victorian visitor in Mepunga Sammy for the Jeff Britton kennel will find this a lot easier than his past couple.  He has only had 7 starts but is very smart when on the bunny.  Time For War will be whipping around them late but is hit and miss at times along with the ultra-consistent Lonzas Charm.  Box Up 1.2.4.8 in a very good betting race.

Race 5 and this is a 600m affair and it looks a charge to the 1st turn with Victa Victoria and As It Goes.  Both are in form and can run time.  Animate and He’s A Villian both have chances and can run into the First 4.  Box Up 1.2.4.8.

The 6th and Kalden Blanco has the pace to lead from the poor draw.  She has been racing well over the short at Gawler and looks well placed in this.  Alderley Riot has the draw and will be right in the mix and Velocity Lyrem will be running on late.  Box Up 1.4.5.6.

How good is this race 7 and there looks to be at least 4 winning chances.  I am going with the Victorian Visitor in Oakvale Destiny.  Another Britton runner, she has won 8 from 20 along with 5 placing’s.  Kalden Gambino will carve across and the exciting Genghis Kahn will be charging home to pinch a place.  Box Up 1.2.4.7

Race 8 and Ray Murray has a handy one in Aston Kane who has won his past 3 on the trot here and at Gawler all in good times and he will prove very hard to beat again from box 4.  Stuzzichino will run a cheeky race from box 2 and Dee Dee Corsair is more than capable on his night.  Box Up the inside 4 ( 1.2.3.4)

The 9th and this appears a two dog affair and they are Cool Guinness and Little Dakota.  They  both have early pace and it will be a match race to the 1st turn.  Victa Brooke will run a cheeky race, so will Spot Goes Racing who will be running on late.  Box Up 1.3.4.6

Race 10 and this is a very open affair with several chances.  I will go with Irish Keepsake who is a chance of leading these and pinch it.  Hashtag Harry finally broke through here last Monday and will be in the mix.  Box Up 1.3.5.6.

The final event on a good night of racing and we will stick with the Irish and the Kirin Corby kennel and that is Irish Midge in box 2.  She can be hit and miss early but hopefully kick up and win.  Gust Bale can lead this but does struggle to run a strong 500m.  Dyna Wista hasn’t been that far away of late and can’t be overlooked.  Box Up 2.4.5.7

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION – NOMINATIONS CLOSING THIS WEEK

Breeders are reminded that the Greyhound Auction nominations close at the end of this month (29th August 2014). The Auction will be held on Sunday 12th October beginning at 12.00 noon at Greyhound Racing SA.

Special conditions and information below –

·         For pups whelped between 1st November 2013 to 31st May 2014

·         $50 Non refundable entry fee

·         11% commission

·         Minimum price of $800 (No Reserve)

·         The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

·         The Main race series stakes ($10,000,$3,000, $1,500, unpl $250). Breeder/Nominator bonuses for main race ($2,000, $1,500, $1,000).

·         Greyhounds purchased through the auction that are not SA Bred will be allowed the same grading exemptions in regards to Grade 6 and Juvenile races as locally bred greyhounds.  The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refer to a grading advantage and have no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.

·         Breeders that nominate three or more pups for the Auction will be entitled to a third Breeders Rebate application.

SPUD REGIS AT STUD ADVERTISING

Greyhound Racing SA has entered into a sponsorship agreement with Brian Treloar in regards to his outstanding chaser Spud Regis who is now standing at stud. Spud Regis is no stranger to SA greyhound fans having won the 2012 Group 3 Derby followed by one of the most emotional wins in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup that year where the “Spud” cheated death in a car accident to go on and win the final. He won over $460,000 in prizemoney winning 18 races from 43 starts.

The advertising sign is situated in front of the Angle Park semaphore board and Spud Regis will have one race name every Monday night at Angle Park. We will be running a Feature Heat and Final series in the next few months where the winning connections will receive a free straw to Spud Regis.

2014 GOLDEN BONE COMPETION – FINAL ROUND TONIGHT

With the final round of tipping tonight we can finally announce what all teams have been playing for over the 5 weeks of tipping.

The nuts and bolts are -

18 month old black bitch

Premier Fantasy x Kalden Athena

Premier Fantasy

International Sire

Won 2004 Easter Cup

National Record Holder 28.08 for 525y at Shelbourne Park

2004 Irish Greyhound of the Year.

Kalden Athena

66 starts with 21 wins, 15 seconds and 7 thirds

Won the Group 3 Coffex Coffee Oaks at Angle Park in 29.75

Was second in the Group 1 Laurels Final at Sandown

Raced against the mighty Miata over 715.

She is un-named, so the winning team will be able to name her!

She has trialled very well at Angle Park, has already run competitive times and will only improve. She will be ready to start her racing career in 4 to 5 weeks.

Last year’s Golden Bone greyhound “Black Merlo” is racing tonight at headquarters. He started of the promotion in fine style winning his first race in SA but unfortunately injury has hampered his performance since. His trainer Robyn Mackellar has done a terrific job to keep him racing with all his setbacks so hopefully he can perform tonight for last year’s winning team.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SUMMARY

Last Saturday night at Cannington was the place to be where the best greyhounds in the Nation put up a fantastic spectacle.

The Sprint series was taken out by the flying NSW star Chica Destacada trained by Doreen Drynan who made full use of box 2 to lead throughout and hold of all her challengers in a gutsy win. SA’s representative Wild Soul for Kim Johnstone got knocked sideways on the first turn putting him out of business early however he battled on to run seventh in his first crack at Group 1 glory.

Token McLaren for trainer Don Foster found himself in one of the best races seen over the staying trip where Sweet It Is for trainer Darren McDonald ran down superstar Xylia Allen to claim the Distance crown. Token McLaren ran a solid race and was doing his best work at the finish in running fifth and only a length of third place so he looks to be getting right back to his brilliant best.

AGRA’s Neil Brown has compiled a comprehensive review of the National Finals which we have placed on the GRSA website along with the ARGA 2013/2014 award winners that were announced over the National Championships Carnival.

WATERLOO CUP THIS SUNDAY

The time honoured Waterloo Cup will be run this Sunday at Virginia. Peter Damarell will be bookmaking oncourse with an exciting program expected.

OAKS AND DERBY TRIALS

Our feature racing is really starting to heat up with the Oaks, Derby and Adelaide Cup all being run in the next few months. Recently we have been seeing the Interstate greyhounds coming across and trialing as a lead up to these big races.

There were three trials on Monday night at Angle Park in preparation for the Group 3 Coffex Coffee Oaks.

Justin King from NSW trialled Miss Pocano who went 4.52,16.96,30.02 for the 515m journey. He also trialled Miss Sueko who went 4.59,17.13,29.96.

Darren McDonald’s chaser Eliza Blanche trialled in 4.62,17.23,30.10.

Tuesday night at the Angle Park trials participants were able to see one of the leading contenders for next month’s Schweppes Derby.  Iva Vision flew in from Queensland to trial with Brian Young on hand. He is a winner of 8 races from his 12 starts and last night impressed with a 4.62,16.99,29.80 performance over the 515m. Expect improvement during the series as Iva Vision’s plane was delayed and he only arrived in Adelaide 1 hour before the trials started.

Tonight Jeff Britton will have a few racing but he will also trial stars Mepunga Hayley and Oakvale Flyer in preparation for the Oaks.

GAWLER SHOW DATES

The Gawler Show is this weekend which means we have not been able to race or trial at the Gawler track this week.

This will continue next week with a return to Gawler on Wednesday night (3rd September) for their trials.

THE ADVERTISER – THURSDAY FORM GUIDE IN FULL SWING

Participants would have seen the updated presentation of the Thursday form guide in The Advertiser which started two weeks ago.  The initiative is part of a broader plan to drive local wagering interest in wagering on the greyhound product, particularly during our feature race series’ in the weeks ahead. This will be for the next 3 months and we have already received positive feedback from the industry.
