TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Well it doesn’t get any better than tonight’s racing.  We have two huge finals in the sprint and the distance and both winners will be heading to Perth to represent the state.  Good luck to whoever wins and I am sure they will do us proud.

Race 1 and we kick off with a 600m affair.  There are several chances and I am going with As It Goes out in box 7.  She was an eye-catching run here last start when storming home over the sprint from box 3 and the extra distance will be a major help.  Box up 1.5.7.8 in a good betting race.

The 2nd event and the favourite will be Galilee Spirit in box 5.  He has been racing in a lot tougher company of late and will be an improver.  However we should have a little wager on the pacey Charmed Assassin from the Jovanovic kennel, as he has the pace to lead from the rails.  Add in Princess Tee for the trifecta.  Box Up 2.5.6.7

The 3rd and Honky Tonk Doll is coming off a slick 29.91 win here last start from box 7 and will be hard to beat on that run.  She is in form and is the measuring stick.  Box Up 2.4.7.8. but the 4 runner does appears a good thing.

Race 4 and Kalden Kostello for the Murray kennel rattled home here last start and won in 30.04 from box 2 when a odds on favourite.  He is well drawn and has the pace to carve across and salute the judge.  I like Screamin’ from box 1, did run a cheeky race along with Shamrock Petal.  Box up 1.2.6.8.

The 5th and this is a very tough betting race with a heap of chances, my roughie is Hairy Bear out in box 6.  He is very slow early.  Queen Rascal looks the likely leader but gets the wobbles over the last 50m but could nearly pinch this.  Box Up 2.4.6.7

Race 6 and this is the SA National Distance Final.  We have 2 main chances in the 4 and the 8 runners.  I am going with Psychotic Gold (4) as she has been in terrific form and carved out a BON 43.13 here last week from box 3.  She has slow beginners on her inside and should land on the pace.  Token McLaren is the big danger and a win wouldn’t surprise.  He will only keep improving since his short spell.  Box Up 3.4.6.8.

The 7th and Fire Tyson resumed from a spell and led here last start from box 2 but was run down to finish 2nd here Monday night in 30.00.  He will be the big improver for mine and is boxed to win.  Wingard and Kalden Balerion are the major contenders.  Box Up 1.2.3.6

How good is the sprint final!!!  Race 8 on the card.  It is very hard to go past the book ends and that is box 1 and 8 (of course).  Both have been in terrific form of late and it will be whoever hits the 1st turn in front should win.  There are several who will be rattling home late and they are Wild Soul and Set The Scene, BUT, we should not overlook the Troy Murray trained Kalden Gambino who carved out a BON 28.84 here last week in the heats.  Box Up 1.3.4.8 and what a terrific race to have a trifecta and a first 4.

The 9th and Little Dakota  is very smart when on song.  He is down in grade tonight and will take a power of beating with a little early luck.  The main danger looks to be Madison McLaren down in box 1.  Add in Vinsato who is in good form along with Allinga Dot.  Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 10 and this appears a tough affair.  Nevada Smith is resuming and is a chance of sprinting well fresh from box 3.  Bugsy Taylor broke through last start for a slick win and should be in a gangster movie with the name, I love it!!!!  Add in a newcomer in Kalden Playboy for the Murray Kennel who has transferred from W.A and is sure to be well tried at debut and it makes it a good betting race.  Box Up 1.3.6.8.

The final event and let’s hope for a bit of luck here.  I will go with the box draw and that is Want That Rabbit, we can’t leave out Lektra Betty who won here Monday night from this draw.  The smokey could be the Todd Kelly trained Hashtag Harry.  Box Up 1.4.5.8

ASTON KANE GOES CLOSE TO TRACK RECORD AT GAWLER

Resuming after 2 ½ months of the track the Ray Murray trained Aston Kane showed that he had lost none of his high speed by going within .01 of the 400m track record at Gawler. Aston Kane who won 9 races in a row prior to the break ran a blistering 22.28 for the 400m at Gawler on Tuesday winning by over 6 lengths and challenging the record time of Avid Tyson who ran 22.27 on 1st April this year. Aston Kane has the impressive record of 12 starts for 10 wins and 1 placing and looks to be a highly promising chaser for the Murray kennel.

NO TRIALS AT ANGLE PARK THIS SATURDAY

There will be No trials at Angle Park this Saturday due to Catching Pen work starting on Friday and being completed before Monday nights race meeting. Trainers can still trial at Gawler on Monday and the normal Tuesday night trials at Angle Park.

CHASERS UPGRADES THIS WEEKEND

There is plenty of work going on at Angle Park with a much needed upgrade of Chasers Restaurant starting this weekend. There will be new carpet laid and new furniture installed. Along with the new tv’s installed earlier in the year it should make for a much better experience for our trainers and oncourse patrons.

Work will begin at the Western End (Industry) of the venue over the weekend however it won’t be completed until next Thursday so on Monday night it will appear that only half the venue is completed. I would request that trainers and patrons be patient if it affects them moving around the venue as our staff will be working hard to get it completed as quickly as possible.

EMPTYING OUT AREA AT ANGLE PARK

With Council work beginning next to the Trainers Car Park at Angle Park the emptying out area used on Trial Days/Nights is now unavailable to trainers. The normal emptying out area over the ramp will now have to be used so I suggest if you need to use these facilities that you arrive at Angle Park 5-10 minutes early.

Add: GOTBA – Sunday 31st August 2014 (Non TAB)

COFFEX COFFEE OAKS & SCHWEPPES DERBY

Owners and trainers are reminded that the Oaks & Derby at Angle Park are fast approaching. A reminder to trainers about the eligibility and conditions of both these series which has our races listed as one of the few AGRA Age Restricted Classics for the season.

The whelping date of both the Oaks and Derby is for greyhounds whelped 30 months prior to the heats so to be eligible for both series your greyhound will have to be whelped on or after 1st March 2012. The other requirement is that Maidens are ineligible so your greyhound has to have won a race.

The series will be a two week series with Open Heats and a Final. The heats this year have increased with the changes to prizemoney from $2,960 to $4,415 so they are well worth winning.

The Dates are:

Coffex Coffee Oaks (Group 3):

$4,415 Heats x 8 – Thursday 4th September

$35,000 Final – Thursday 11th September

Nominations close Monday 1st September at 9.00am.

Schweppes Derby (Group 3):

$4,415 Heats x 8 – Thursday 11th September

$35,000 Final – Thursday 18th September

Nominations close Monday 8th September at 9.00am.

GAWLER SHOW DATES

August means that it is coming up to Gawler Show time, so a couple of weeks of racing at Gawler will be transferred to Angle Park this year.

This year the Annual Gawler Show will be held on the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August. Racing on Tuesday 26th August and Tuesday 2nd September will be at Angle Park. These will be Angle Park Provincial (APD) fixtures with normal Tuesday prizemoney. Racing on Friday 29th August will be at Mount Gambier.

Trials will be cancelled at Gawler on Wednesday 27th August and Thursday 28th August. We will hopefully have the track ready to trial again on Wednesday 3rd September, but this will be dependent on the weather over the show weekend. There will be no Qualifying Trials at Gawler on Wednesday 20th August, as the following Tuesday is at Angle Park. There will be trials as per normal at Angle Park on Tuesday 26th August and Saturday 30th August.

UPDATED TRIALLING WITH NO EMERLEY PARK

Emerley Park recently advised that some of the facilities at their property would be closed as of 1 July 2014. This would mean that some trainers would become affected by the decision as the Circle Track will no longer be available to be used. The Straight Track will continue to be opened for free galloping and the Bull ring will still be available.

Main users were contacted and they were of the opinion that an additional time slot is required for the sole purpose of allowing trainers to break pups in and to continue education up until they start to compete in Qualifying trials or races.

As the new racing calendar has Gawler racing every Sunday there would be little watering required on a Monday morning to have the surface prepared for trialing. Therefore as of 14 July 2014 trials will be available every Monday at Gawler for trainers at Gawler for the sole purposes of breaking in or education.

These trials will commence at 8.00am and conclude no later than 9.30am.

The number of trials for these days will be monitored and an ongoing assessment will occur with any changes required implemented.

A $7.00 fee for trialing will apply.

MARKETING MATTERS

2014 GOLDEN BONE COMPETITION

The tipping competition to win a greyhound started last week with the leading team at the end of the 5 weeks being the proud owner of a racing greyhound for the next 12 months. With over 300 teams registered we will hopefully see plenty of new faces around Angle Park.

STRATHALBYN NEWS

The Strathalbyn Committee has advised the following racing and trialling for the next few months:

Day Races Friday August 8th

Qualy Trials 15th August

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.

MEDIA RELEASE - NATIONAL OZCHASE SYSTEM DELIVERED

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) Manager Greyhound Racing, Mark Bottcher, today welcomes the addition of Racing Queensland to the new greyhound system, OzChase.

Racing Queensland joins the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

The OzChase system was developed by Racing and Wagering Western Australia in a joint venture arrangement with Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW).

The RWWA Information Services Division has designed, built, hosts and maintains the OzChase system at their Osborne Park offices.

“It is extremely pleasing Racing Queensland has joined other states to develop a national racing system,” said Mark Bottcher.

“It has been a long hard road but the efforts of all those involved over the past four years have not been in vain.

“Special recognition must go to the collaborative efforts of the RWWA Project team; GRNSW and controlling authority staff in all jurisdictions, whose tireless efforts, amazing

cooperation, commitment, energy and foresight have seen OzChase delivered.

“I am confident history will prove that the enormity of OzChase and the courage of administrators in pursuing and building such a system will prove a watershed moment in Australian Greyhound racing.”

OzChase has been built with a strong business rule emphasis to ensure that the rules of racing are adhered to when data is entered and a number of sub-systems have been developed to assist in the management of industry integrity and greyhound welfare.

The system allows controlling authorities to monitor the status and location of all racing animals throughout their full lifecycle and take appropriate action against participants who do not adhere to this critical aspect of the industry.

A microchip management system is in place to control stocks of microchips, their allocation to implanters/breeders and their implanting into greyhound pups.

A samples (swabs) management system has been implemented to control all aspects of the sampling of greyhounds including the management of sample kits to and from testing laboratories and the notification of sample testing results. Development of an injury reporting system is well under way to assist with monitoring and reporting of all types of

greyhound injuries.
