TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

We would have finished on the right side of the ledger last Thursday night and tonight the main event on the card is the Champion Puppy Final which is race 8 on the programme.  I have itchy palms and that is either I have a problem or it’s money, let’s hope for the latter.

Race 1 and it is a great race to kick off with.  There look 3 main chances and I will go with Galilee Spirit.  He was checked out of it last start and finished down the track.  He can bounce back and win despite the draw.  Add in Nebula who is in fine form along with Regal Looper who will be flying home late.  Box Up 3.4.6.7

The 2nd event and he looks one of the better bets of the night.  That is Grande To Excel, a pacey type who should lead and win from box 3.  There are several chances for the minors so Box Up 3.4.5.7

A very open race and a good punting race is the 3rd event.  I can narrow it down to 4 runners and all of them could win.  Box Up 2.3.4.8 over the 731m and is a must for trifecta punters to have a wager.

Race 4 and Bogie Classic appears well placed out in box 7.  She has a good turn of early pace and is well drawn, she will take beating.  Kalden Kostello can be hit and miss on box rise but will be an improver.  Lifestyle Lad has had a quick win here in 29.97 from box 3 beside his name, but will need to overcome the wide draw.  Box Up 2.5.7.8

The 600m event is an absolute ripper and Genghis Kahn is returning to his pet distance.  He has a perfect record of 4 from 4 and will be the one to catch. Wild Soul will be the leader and has a picket fence of wins beside his name.  Add in the 6 runner along with Who De Punk for the trifecta.  Box Up 3.5.6.7.

Race 6 and it looks a 2 dog race, but it doesn’t always work out that way.  Farmeroo is well drawn down in box 1 and has the pace to lead and hopefully hold on.  Wiregrass has pace and is knocking on the door.  Box Up 1.5.6.7

The 7th and this is another best bet for mine and that is Sidney’s Shadow out in box 8.  She was an eye catching run here last start when 2nd in a quick 29.83 and will be very hard to beat.  Wingard is racing well along with Encosta Kahn.  Box Up 1.4.5.8

This is the Champion Puppy Final, race 8 on the card and it is a very open affair.  I am going with the box draw and that is Gun McBain down in box 1.  He has a heap of early pace and can hold the lead Coulta Rock is a visitor from over the border and won here in 30.01 on debut.  Will be an improver with the look at the track.  Box Up 1.3.4.7 Good luck to all runners.

Race 9 and Big Mick Dee is well drawn out in box 8.  She can lead and carve across for the Rasmussen kennel.  Aston Odin is better than form suggests and can bounce back from box 4.  There will be one running on late and that is Curlwaa Hope down in box 3.  Box Up 3.4.6.8

Race 10 and the pacey Nowak has his paw on the till with 4 placing’s on the trot here and at Gawler.  Can break through.  Mullingar Lad and Krakow Mclaren will both be running on.  Box Up 2.3.5.7.

The final event and let’s hope we are that far in front we can have a cheeky bet.  Box Up 2.3.4.5.  They appear the main chances with the Petar Jovanovic Spot Goes Racing being the pick of them.  BUT have a dollar or two on Major Kahn at odds.  Could be the SURPRISE packet in an open affair from box 1, and is my roughie of the night.

2014 CHAMPION PUPPY – BOX DRAW

Two exciting heats were conducted last Thursday night at Angle Park where the first four from each race qualified for tonights Champion Puppy final. Out of the 8 greyhounds tonight there are two sets of siblings and three from the Spring Gun x Flame McBain litter in a terrific breeding and training performance by Todd Kelly.

The first heat was taken out by the Todd Kelly trained Gun McBain who added to his impressive record of 9 wins from 18 starts when he positioned up nicely just off the pace early before taking control down the back straight. He went to the line comfortably in a solid 30.32 with both Dyna Motley at his second start and Footluce Diva running home solidly from the rear of the field to fill the minor money. Gun McBain has drawn nicely tonight out of the red box and looks the likely leader however there will be plenty of greyhounds getting home hard so he will have to be at his brilliant best.

The second heat was taken out in impressive fashion by Coulta Rock for Victorian trainer David Curtain. He made full use of his inside box to rail hard down the back straight and assume control after a solid start. A greyhound who has won in 29.52 at Sandown wasn’t going to be caught from there and Coulta Rock raced away for an easy 3 ½ length win in a slick 30.01. Again the minor placegetters got home hard from the rear with Kasai Warrior and Coulta Mayham making good ground.

Its shaping as a terrific race for some of the most promising young chasers you will see and if they can replicate the performances of last years winner, Ernie Bung Arrow, we could be seeing the next Group 1 Adelaide Cup winner.  Good luck to all connections concerned.

The box draw for the 2014 Champion Puppy final:

1.    Gun McBain                     Todd Kelly

2.    Footluce Diva                  Ken Trowbridge

3.    Coulta Mayham               David Curtain

4.    Coulta Rock                     David Curtain

5.    Dyna Motley                    Wendy Matcott

6.    Sunday Shoes                             Nathan Wilson

9.    Gunsmoke McBain (8)    Todd Kelly

10.  Hashtag Harry (res)                     SCR

Tonight’s $6,875 Champion Puppy final will be run at 9.11pm (SA time) and is race 8 on the program with full coverage on Sky Racing 1.

GAWLER TRACK TURNOVER POSTPONED AGAIN

The Gawler track was due to have a turnover today however due to the inclement weather experienced this was not done. This is now three weeks in a row and is becoming quite frustrating for all concerned. I would ask that all participants remain patient and we are hopefully to get the turnover completed next Wednesday.

GAWLER MOVED TO STRATHALBYN ON SUNDAY 3RD AUGUST

Please be advised that due to the Scouts Rally SA at the Gawler venue of the weekend 2nd & 3rd August 2014 the Gawler Twilight meeting on Sunday 3rd August has been moved.  The venue will be taken up by Rally Cars so there is no possible hope of racing at Gawler.

The Sunday meeting will now to be conducted by Strathalbyn.

Details are listed below:

Delete: Gawler – Sunday 3rd August 2014 (TAB) Twilight

Add: Strathalbyn – Sunday 3rd August 2014 (TAB) Twilight

QUEENSLAND TO “GO LIVE” ON OZCHASE THIS WEEKEND

The final State to come onto the Ozchase Racing system will be Queensland who are due to “Go Live” over this weekend (26th & 27th July). This will mean that all states except GRVIC (Fastrack) will now use the Ozchase system which will mean quicker and better developments for the system to benefit all states.

This will mean however that over this weekend the Ozchase system will be down until Sunday afternoon or even Monday morning. This will affect Online nominations in particular and the updating of race results at the race meetings. Similar issues were encountered when Western Australia and NSW went “Live” earlier where GRSA moved nomination times to assist trainers and we will do the same over this weekend.

Race meetings affected are –

·         Angle Park Thursday 31st July – Nominations will close at 9.00am on Friday 25th July rather than the normal Monday. Fields will be released on Friday.

·         Mount Gambier Friday 1st August – Nominations will close at 9.00am on Tuesday 29th July rather than the normal Monday. Fields will be released on Tuesday.

This change should mean that no one should be affected by the changes to the Ozchase system with Queensland coming on board and no race meetings should be affected because trainers could not nominate.

UPDATED TRIALLING WITH NO EMERLEY PARK

Emerley Park recently advised that some of the facilities at their property would be closed as of 1 July 2014. This would mean that some trainers would become affected by the decision as the Circle Track will no longer be available to be used. The Straight Track will continue to be opened for free galloping and the Bull ring will still be available.

Main users were contacted and they were of the opinion that an additional time slot is required for the sole purpose of allowing trainers to break pups in and to continue education up until they start to compete in Qualifying trials or races.

As the new racing calendar has Gawler racing every Sunday there would be little watering required on a Monday morning to have the surface prepared for trialing. Therefore as of 14 July 2014 trials will be available every Monday at Gawler for trainers at Gawler for the sole purposes of breaking in or education.

These trials will commence at 8.00am and conclude no later than 9.30am.

The number of trials for these days will be monitored and an ongoing assessment will occur with any changes required implemented.

A $7.00 fee for trialing will apply.

GRSA TRIAL OFFICE TO CLOSE FROM JULY 1ST
The GRSA trial office which is open every Tuesday night will close from 1st July 2014. With Chasers Restaurant also being open on this night and very little patronage upstairs it was decided to maximise our staffing and close one of these areas. GRSA considered closing the Restaurant however after consultation with the AGRC and participants it was agreed that the option for participants to have a place to view the trials in hot or cold weather out weighted the lack of patronage. From the 1st July the trial office will be closed and all trials will need to be paid upstairs in the Restaurant by the staff there. Please be mindful that the staff in the Restaurant will only take the trial money, any racing documentation can be handed to the staff to be updated the next day.

Food and beverages can be purchased as per normal

On trial night GRSA receives on average of two phone calls per night so anyone who calls after the normal close of administration will get a recorded message. Race fields will be placed upstairs for viewing by oncourse patrons.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
