TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

An interesting night of racing confronts us tonight.  With a 731m event on the programme along with two very good 600m events, it makes for a terrific night for punting and there could be a couple of winners at handy odds.

Race 1 and the pace in the race will be coming from Smash Crash down in box 2.  He has the form on the board and will be very hard to beat again on his recent win here in 30.08.  Fair Change hasn’t been that far away and is more than capable of surprising with an ounce of luck.  We can’t leave Allen Illem out as he will be running on late.  Box Up 2.3.6.8.

The 2nd event and Tia Belle has won 4 of her last 5 starts here and at Gawler.  With her dash out of the lids she should be able to pinch this from box 8.  Woodside Jagger has been hit and miss of late but appears well suited here despite the draw of 5.  Add in Taser McBain along with Dyna Morrigan for the minors.  Box Up 4.5.6.8.

Race 3 and this is the Distance event of the night.  Long Gully Surf has the form on the board with 2 wins in handy times on the trot and should be very handy early.  Defib Daryl found himself in front last start but prefers to be the one running on so he will be hard to beat.  They look the main two chances.  Box up 1.3.4. 6.

The 4th and Stews Mistake has struck form at the right time and definitely has the pace to clear them from the difficult draw of 5 and hold out Tyson Willow, who will be running on.  Avatar Kist could be the smoky if there is trouble early as he should get a clear run for the Hurley kennel.  Box up the inside 4 from 1.2.3.4.

Race 5 and the two main chances will come from box 1 and 7.  Both can be hit and miss on box rise but if they begin, either will take running down so I would go with the better odds of the two.  Add in Allen Kenny out in the pink for the trifecta.  Box up 1.3.7.8.

Race 6 and Cool Promise has the perfect draw of 1 and should be handy early on the fence and will take beating.  Kalden Balerion has early pace and is another who is in form and will make his presence felt from box 4.  The run on types in Happy Skipper and Wiregrass all have place claims.  Box Up 1.4.5.8.

The 7th and this is the first of the 600m races and a very good one at that.  There are several chances and I have gone with the Barry Stewart runner in Bally Swift out in box 7.  She has pace and will be hard to hold out.  I like Animate down in box 1 as the danger.  She has been around the mark.  We can’t leave out Manila Express who has a very big motor with a clear run and could be the one at eachway odds.  Box up 1.2.6.7

Race 8 and how good has Wild Soul been racing lately.  He has box 1 in this and should lead throughout.  Stop Scrammin’ is one we said last week was a big chance and he rattled home to win in 30.08 and looks a big chance again for trifecta punters.  Add in Lolly Bale and the pacey Dee Dee Corsair.  Box Up 1.2.3.5.

Race 9 and this is the second of the 600m events, and it appears a two dog race.  Fire Tyson and Genghis Kahn.  I am tipping the latter as he has the form on the board over this trip with 2 smart wins.  Box  1.6 the field

The 10th and Punishment can bounce back from box 6 for Carole Scott.  He can be hit and miss on box rise but has a couple of average beginner’s on his inside and is a chance of pinching this.  The main danger and the favourite will be the well drawn Boojerooma down in box 1.  Add in Poida at big odds as he will be running on but doesn’t win many so a place looks best.  Box Up 1.3.4.6

The final event, Race 11, and King Chaos can lead here from box 1.  Should send us all home on a winning note.  Footrot Fanning and the newcomer Aeroplane Bowser can run into the placing’s.  Box Up 1 from 6.7.8.

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014

Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.

So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30.

OAKVALE DESTINY NOMINATED FOR THE “PEOPLE’S CHOICE” IN VICTORIA

The SA Bred and Owned greyhound "Oakvale Destiny" who won the Group 1 Sapphire Crown last month has been nominated for the "People's Choice Greyhound of the Month" for May in Victoria. There are 5 dogs in the running, and the public vote via the internet will determine the winner. With the terrific support that Nathan Wilson has received for her we have put a link for people to vote onto our website. It would be great to help get her over the line for connections.

The link is - http://www.grv.org.au/news/2014/06/10/4884/  where you can watch the videos etc. and then vote.

2014 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The AGRA National Championships are just around the corner. The National Finals this year will be held at Cannington in Western Australia to be conducted on Saturday 23rd August. Both the National Sprint and National Distance Finals will carry prizemoney of $75,000 to the winner.

The State series for SA will be held at Angle Park for the Sprint and Distance on Thursday 31st July for the Heats with the State Finals on the 7th August.

The most important date for local trainers to remember is the national closing date for entries. Acceptances for the National Championships will close with GRSA on Thursday 24th July at 12 noon. Nominations must be on the prescribed form and the conditions of nomination must also be signed. The forms are available at GRSA and on the GRSA website.

A reminder to all trainers of the clause which requires a greyhound to have been domiciled in South Australia for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the National Acceptance Closing date to be eligible to represent SA. If unsure of a greyhound’s status, please contact the GRSA grading staff.

ANOTHER PROMOTIONAL GREYHOUND IN SA

With promotional greyhounds Black Merlo (Chasing the Golden Bone) and Rush Hour Return (Make A Wish Foundation/Triple M) having reasonable success in SA we will have another greyhound racing for charity.

“Blue Star” to be trained by Rebecca McAuley-Fry will start on Friday at Gawler with proceeds going to Beyond Blue and the Starlight Foundation. Rebecca has taken on the greyhound to race for charity and hopefully provide some funds for some worthy causes.

In relation to Rush Hour Return she is heading down to Mt Gambier to be trained by Tracie Price and is engaged on Sunday. As she is a Grade 6 SA Bred greyhound there is some terrific opportunities for her in the South East and hopefully can earn some more money for Make A Wish. We thank Laurie Cahalan for his training efforts and Tracie Price for agreeing to take her to the Mount.

600M AT MOUNT GAMBIER

The Mount Gambier GRC has been in the process of putting in 600m boxes at their venue. In the June All Tracks calendar the Club have advertised a Heat and Final series sponsored by the sire “Premier Boloney”over the 600m. The Club are close to getting approval for these boxes with the series put back a week to Friday 20th June for the Heats and Sunday 29th June for the Final. Bear in mind if there is no approval for these boxes then there will be no event over the 600m so it is important that trainers put an alternate distance on their nomination just in case.

GRSA PARTICIPANT RETURNS CONTINUE TO GROW

Returns to South Australian greyhound participants will increase for the eighth consecutive year, after the GRSA Board approved a 4.13% increase to total returns in the 2014/15 financial year. The increase will add an additional $254,000 to industry returns, which incorporates stakemoney, trainers rebate, SA bred bonuses and the popular breeders’ rebate scheme.  Total industry returns will exceed $6.4 million in the next racing season.

Key changes to GRSA participant returns include:

  • A major change to all Category 3 meetings with stakemoney to be tiered by Grade type, resulting in a 9.1% increase to the category
  • An increase to the trainers rebate to $30 per trainer and $5 per greyhound (currently $25 per trainer)
  • A 3.6% increase to base level metropolitan stakemoney on Thursday nights
  • Special Events (including heats and semi-finals) and all Finals to carry the same stakemoney as Free-For-All events
  • Increase to the Cup allocation for Mt Gambier and Strathalbyn resulting in total stakemoney for these events of $10,000

Changes to the stakemoney framework will commence on 1st July 2014. Please refer to the GRSA website for full details of these changes.

GRSA TRIAL OFFICE TO CLOSE FROM JULY 1ST
The GRSA trial office which is open every Tuesday night will close from 1st July 2014. With Chasers Restaurant also being open on this night and very little patronage upstairs it was decided to maximise our staffing and close one of these areas. GRSA considered closing the Restaurant however after consultation with the AGRC and participants it was agreed that the option for participants to have a place to view the trials in hot or cold weather out weighted the lack of patronage. From the 1st July the trial office will be closed and all trials will need to be paid upstairs in the Restaurant by the staff there. Please be mindful that the staff in the Restaurant will only take the trial money, any racing documentation can be handed to the staff to be updated the next day. On trial night GRSA receives on average of two phone calls per night so anyone who calls after the normal close of administration will get a recorded message. Race fields will be placed upstairs for viewing by oncourse patrons.

GOTBA COURSING STAKEMONEY & RACING SCHEDULE

GOTBA will only race 4-dog events for very young greyhounds just starting their racing career.  To enable them to compete against their own age group, the Club will provide the opportunity for a greyhound to win a maiden event, and 4 juvenile events before it progresses to a Novice event.

All greyhounds just starting racing are entitled to compete in a 4-dog event – Juvenile/Maiden and a young greyhound can then compete in a Juvenile and will be permitted to win up to 4 Juvenile races.  Juvenile events are for greyhounds under 2 years old at the time of nomination.

Greyhounds who have raced on the circle but who have never competed in field coursing are eligible for a Maiden event, these will be 8-dog events and every attempt will be made to grade “like” with “like”, however this will be dependent upon the number of nominations received.

Prizemoney will now be

4-dog event   Winner $120, Runner-Up $40    Nomination fee : $8

8-dog event   Winner $190, Runner-Up $70    Nomination fee : $10

Feature events will be the 2014 SA Waterloo Cup, SA Oaks and SA Derby – all these events are for 16 dogs and prizemoney schedules will be released closer to the events.

Of course, if the Club only receives 4 nominations for a specific event, this event will be run as a 4-dog race, e.g. 4 open nominations.    The Club is most appreciative of the support shown by owners/trainers and trusts that this support continues.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
