TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

What a terrific night of racing we have here at headquarters tonight.  We kick off in race 1 with a 5 dog field full of class, and all 5 are more than capable of winning. The Shane McQueen Final over the 600m is race 8 on the card and is an outstanding event, there is $5,000 to the winner on offer.

Race 1 and it’s a terrific race to open with.  There is a heap of pace in this event.  Let’s go with the tried and true in Fire Tyson out in box 7.  He loves to lead and should be able to cross with an ounce of luck.  Add in the ultra-consistent Encosta Kahn and the well drawn Galilee Spirit who will be thundering home.  Box up 1.2.4.7

The second event and this has a mixture of front runners and run on types.  I am going with Vuchko who is hit and miss early but is very smart if he can stay out of trouble early.  He has 2 wins in his last 4 starts here, both in quick times.  Add in Cowboy Jury and the pacey Woodside Jagger who can pinch this if there is trouble.  Box up 1.2.3.5.

Race 3 and this is the Distance event of the night and there is at least 4 chances.  The pace will come from Long Gully Surf out in box 6 and can pinch this on the bunny.  Manila Express will only improve from her last start 2nd.  Add in Defib Daryl who will rail the house down along with Zara Mclaren who will be flying home late.  Box up 1.2.3.6

The fourth event and forget her last start.  Lexcen for Ossie Chegia down in box 1, had the classic slow out and never a chance last start but that was a shocking effort and will bounce back in this (trust me) ???  Add in Big Mick Dee and Avatar Kist who will be rattling home late.  Box up 1.4.6.8.

Race 5 and this looks a two dog race and they are both last start winners.  Dyna Gray and Kalden Kapone with the latter having won here in quick times in the past.  Despite the draw they will be very hard to beat.  Box up 1.2.5.8 in a good betting race.

The Murray kennel can back up with a race to race double.  Kalden Balerion can salute from box 1.  He rattled home late to win here in 30.04 from box 6 last week and will only improve from the rails draw.  Fancy Rick has been in fine form but has the ordinary draw of box 5 but is very smart when on song.  Royal Tone and Wrex Bale can fill the placing’s and the pick 4.  Box up 1.5.7.8.

Race 7 and I like Sporting Tears out in box 7.  He won here in 29.87 two starts back from this draw will be very hard to beat again.

As It Goes can improve and will be right in the mix along with Stop Scrammin’ who will be rattling home late and a win wouldn’t shock if they opened up early.  Box up 1.4.5.7

The 8th and this is the feature of the night, The Shane McQueen Final over the 600m.  What a race! and another with a heap of chances.  Big Zap made a terrific debut over this trip and carved out a slick 34.88 BON from box 4, and the Murray kennel is on fire.  He will be very hard to tip against. The Port Power owned Cairnlea Layla has had a hiccup or two in her past couple but is drawn for a bold showing along with the ultra-consistent Wild Soul who will be powering home.  Box up 3.5.7.8. in a top race.

Race 9 and this is a very tough betting affair as it’s hard to tip a winner.  I have gone with Junta Bale out in box 8 but not with a heap of confidence.  Mel Allen along with Omar Bale all have chances.  Box up 1.3.5.8 (good luck)

The 10th and I am putting the pressure on the Troy Murray kennel as they can go home with a treble if Aston East salutes in this event.   He has been in fine form and has the pace to pinch this.  Allen Kenny had no luck last start when he didn’t beat a runner home but had the paw on the till prior, a win is very close.  Box up 3.4.7.8.

The final event and we can go home on a winner in Boojerooma she charged home late to beat Wingard here last start in 29.83 from box 1 and is well suited here.  I like Buzz Kahn at handy odds to run a place along with Kisai Blade for trifecta punters.  Box up 1.2.6.7

ANOTHER PROMOTIONAL GREYHOUND IN SA

With promotional greyhounds Black Merlo (Chasing the Golden Bone) and Rush Hour Return (Make A Wish Foundation/Triple M) having reasonable success in SA we will have another greyhound racing for charity.

Very shortly a greyhound called “Blue Star” to be trained by Rebecca McAuley-Fry will start its racing career with proceeds going to Beyond Blue and the Starlight Foundation. Rebecca has taken on the greyhound to race for charity and hopefully provide some funds for some worthy causes.

In relation to Rush Hour Return she is heading down to Mt Gambier to be trained by Tracie Price. As she is a Grade 6 SA Bred greyhound there is some terrific opportunities for her in the South East and hopefully can earn some more money for Make A Wish. We thank Laurie Cahalan for his training efforts and Tracie Price for agreeing to take her to the Mount.

600M AT MOUNT GAMBIER

The Mount Gambier GRC has been in the process of putting in 600m boxes at their venue. In the June All Tracks calendar the Club have advertised a Heat and Final series sponsored by the sire “Premier Boloney”over the 600m. The Club are close to getting approval for these boxes with the series put back a week to Friday 20th June for the Heats and Sunday 29th June for the Final. Bear in mind if there is no approval for these boxes then there will be no event over the 600m so it is important that trainers put an alternate distance on their nomination just in case.

GRSA POLLING NUMBER CHANGE

A few weeks ago GRSA had some issues with our fax machines resulting in the Graders fax machine being replaced. This machine unfortunately did not have Polling facilities so that participants could access the fields by fax. The Administration fax did so below are the correct numbers to call –

Polling of Race Fields – 08 268 2870

Administration Fax – 08 8268 2870

Grader Fax – 08 8243 1964

GRSA PARTICIPANT RETURNS CONTINUE TO GROW

Returns to South Australian greyhound participants will increase for the eighth consecutive year, after the GRSA Board approved a 4.13% increase to total returns in the 2014/15 financial year. The increase will add an additional $254,000 to industry returns, which incorporates stakemoney, trainers rebate, SA bred bonuses and the popular breeders’ rebate scheme.  Total industry returns will exceed $6.4 million in the next racing season.

Key changes to GRSA participant returns include:

  • A major change to all Category 3 meetings with stakemoney to be tiered by Grade type, resulting in a 9.1% increase to the category
  • An increase to the trainers rebate to $30 per trainer and $5 per greyhound (currently $25 per trainer)
  • A 3.6% increase to base level metropolitan stakemoney on Thursday nights
  • Special Events (including heats and semi-finals) and all Finals to carry the same stakemoney as Free-For-All events
  • Increase to the Cup allocation for Mt Gambier and Strathalbyn resulting in total stakemoney for these events of $10,000

Changes to the stakemoney framework will commence on 1st July 2014. Please refer to the GRSA website for full details of these changes.

GOTBA COURSING STAKEMONEY & RACING SCHEDULE

GOTBA will only race 4-dog events for very young greyhounds just starting their racing career.  To enable them to compete against their own age group, the Club will provide the opportunity for a greyhound to win a maiden event, and 4 juvenile events before it progresses to a Novice event.

All greyhounds just starting racing are entitled to compete in a 4-dog event – Juvenile/Maiden and a young greyhound can then compete in a Juvenile and will be permitted to win up to 4 Juvenile races.  Juvenile events are for greyhounds under 2 years old at the time of nomination.

Greyhounds who have raced on the circle but who have never competed in field coursing are eligible for a Maiden event, these will be 8-dog events and every attempt will be made to grade “like” with “like”, however this will be dependent upon the number of nominations received.

Prizemoney will now be

4-dog event   Winner $120, Runner-Up $40    Nomination fee : $8

8-dog event   Winner $190, Runner-Up $70    Nomination fee : $10

Feature events will be the 2014 SA Waterloo Cup, SA Oaks and SA Derby – all these events are for 16 dogs and prizemoney schedules will be released closer to the events.

Of course, if the Club only receives 4 nominations for a specific event, this event will be run as a 4-dog race, e.g. 4 open nominations.    The Club is most appreciative of the support shown by owners/trainers and trusts that this support continues.

MACRO MEATS NEW SPONSOR FOR ADELAIDE CUP

Ray Borda has thrown his support behind the Group 1 Adelaide Cup and signed up as the naming rights sponsor for SA’s flagship event. This year the Macro Meats Group 1 Adelaide Cup will be run on Friday 10th October for the first time and its great to have Ray on board. Ray has been a terrific sponsor of greyhound racing in Australia with his Macro Meats brand and has committed to not only the Adelaide Cup series but also sponsorship of all clubs in SA along with significant track signage.

GRADE 6 RACING IN SA

We have updated the GRSA website in the Racing section regarding Grade 6 racing in SA. We have put some answers to commonly asked questions by trainers in an attempt to assist trainers planning a program from Maiden through to Grade 5. If there are more questions please feel free to contact the Grading Department at GRSA.

UPDATED GRADING GUIDELINES

After recent consultation with the Grading Review Panel the Grading Guidelines have been updated to clarify policies already applied by the Grader. This is available at Angle Park and available on the GRSA website. The points are listed below–

Grade 6 – This has been updated about not only 5NP races but also if a Grade 6 dog wins a Grade 5 event on Monday and Thursday making it a Grade 5 dog it shouldn’t lose all of its Grade 6’s as it only becomes a Grade 5.

Grade 5 or Above – this has been included and detailed what a Grade 5 or above is.

Interstate Greyhounds – this refers to if an SA Owned greyhound races in Interstate as to what grade it comes back as and when is it considered Interstate.

National Policy is “a greyhound to have been domiciled in South Australia for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the nominations closing date is considered SA”

Grade 6 Eligibility – this advises about what is considered to be a sprint event

Please take note with greyhounds moving backwards and forwards from State to State the Grading Guidelines will apply each time the greyhound returns.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014

Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.

So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30. Renewals will be sent out in early June.
