Tonight's Angle Park Preview
TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow
Well the end of the month is here and we made a little ground last week on a tough programme and did manage to pick a couple of winners. The highlight here tonight is the feature event the Howard Ashton Final and there are two terrific heats of the Shane McQueen 600m with a heap of chances.
Race 1 and the inside two have a terrific chance. Dyna Hula and the Ossie Chegia trained As It Goes look to have it in the bag, then venture out to Kalden Kapone who can ping and win. Box up 1.2.4.8
The second and this is a very open affair with many hopes. We can pinch one at handy odds so let’s jump on Kalden Balerion and make it a double early for the Murray kennel. Box up 2.4.6.8.
Race 3 and this is the distance event of the night and in past weeks it has been a very good betting race for all concerned. Manila Express is very much hit and miss on box rise of late but will be working home well and looks suited to the extra distance. Long Gully Surf appears the likely leader along with Umika Bale. Box up 2.3.7.8.
The 4th and Charmed Assassin has to bounce back on his past couple of runs and the inside draw will be a big bonus and the polish from the Jovanovic kennel will show. Kenso Karoo has the draw but can be hit and miss at times, but is strong. Box up 1.2.3.4
Race 5 and Wild Soul continues to be in the mix. He carved out a slick 35.03 win here last start from this draw so he is the top pick again. However, we can’t leave out Spring Amanda who didn’t have any luck here last start when unplaced over the sprint, but the extra distance will be the benefit and if she leads she will take a power of beating. Add in Victa Victoria from box 1 and Doona Bale. Box up 1.3.4.5.
Race 6 and the second of the 600m events, and it appears a race in two between Big Zap and Cairnlea Layla. They are both quick early but I am going with the two runner. Box up 1.2.4.8 in a very classy affair.
The 7th and Encosta Kahn continues to shine. He loves a wide draw and will be right in the mix again. Emerley Lover can be tardy early but has the form on the board. Dee Dee Corsair bounced back with a win last start in 29.87 and is more than capable of pinching this with early luck. Box up 1.6.7.8
The Howard Ashton Final looks to be a terrific event. It is race 8 on the programme and there are several chances in a big final. I am going for the pace in the race and that is Wingard for Des Hockley, he pounced straight to the front and carved out a slick BON 29.81 win and hasn’t missed a cheque in his last 5 runs here. Regal Looper will be winding up and is drawn for a bold showing and don’t forget there is $25,000 to the winner on offer in this event. Box Up 2.3.6.8.
Race 9 and Dakota Premier started a very short priced favourite here last start and was checked out of it early. But for mine he can bounce back and recapture his best form which is 9 wins from 11 starts. Stop Scrammin’ has the draw but can be hit and miss on box rise. Box up 1.2.4.6.
The 10th and Mr. Donatello has the draw and the ability and looks too good for these. Fancy Rick has been in fine form of late along with Allen Kenny. Box up 1.2.3.7
The final event and Shimmering Hood has the draw down in box 1 and is coming off a handy 30.16 win last start. Could definitely send us home on a winning note. Big Mick Dee can run and can’t be overlooked along with Velocity Bale at handy odds. Box up 1.2.6.8.

2014 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON PREVIEW
Last week at Angle Park there were three fantastic semi finals of the 2014 Howard Ashton where the first two placegetters from each heat and the two fastest third placegetters qualified for tonight’s Group 3 final. In a night full of surprises the fastest qualifier for the final was the Des Hockley trained Wingard who continued his outstanding form in the first semi final running a sizzling 29.81 for the 515m journey. He blistered out of the boxes running a sizzling 4.36 to the first turn to led his challengers easily and from there was never headed going on to record a 1¾ length victory from Punishment who stuck on gamely with Nowak a further 3 lengths behind. Wingard will be looking to add to his impressive record of 17 wins and 13 placings from 36 starts and career prizemoney of just over $20,000 tonight and whilst drawing box 6 his explosive early speed should see him start a warm favourite.
In the second semi final a huge upset occurred when Woodside Jagger for Graham Smith at over $30 on the Tattsbet tote was able to lead most of the way and claim his spot in the final. After all eight greyhounds went to the first turn together Woodside Jagger and Miss Collash were able to pinch a break on the field into the back straight and from there it was just a matter of who would claim the winners prise. Woodside Jagger won by 1 length ahead of WA visitor Miss Collash for trainer Peter Sutherland who continues to improve each run in SA. The winners time was a solid 30.16 with Boojerooma finishing in third place a further 2 lengths away. Woodside Jagger has now won 4 races from his 22 starts with 5 placings and after drawing box 7 in the final still looks to be one of the roughies for tonight’s final.
The third semi final changed complexion quickly down the back straight when King Chaos for Ben Rawlings who had led for most of the race began to shorten stride with the swoopers running home hard. The best of those was the Ossie Chegia trained Lexcen who swept past the field from mid field to go on and record a handy 3 length victory in a solid 30.00. She defeated Regal Looper for Cameron Butcher with Maiden performer Koombooyana Kid grabbing third a further 1¾ lengths away and a spot in tonight’s final.
Lexcen has now won 3 of her last 4 starts and goes into tonight’s final as a big threat after drawing box 3 and with her powerful finish could be running home the hardest at the business end.
The $37,500 Group 3 Final with $25,000 to the winner will be race 8 on tonight’s program and is listed to jump at 9.11pm (SA time). It will be a super nights racing with not only the Group 3 Final but also the Shane McQueen Heats programmed for Open greyhounds over the 600m.
The Final field in Box Draw order is:
1. Koombooyana Kid Bosco Stamenkovic
2. Punishment Carole Scott
3. Lexcen Ossie Chegia
4. Nowak Richard Stasiak
5. Miss Collash Peter Sutherland
6. Wingard Des Hockley
7. Woodside Jagger Graham Smith
8. Regal Looper Cameron Butcher
9. Boojerooma (1st Res) Bosco Stamenkovic
10.Dakota Premier (2nd Res) Colin Simes
Breeders 2014 has one further series to follow the Howard Ashton. That will be the Gawler Breeders 2014 to be run on the 10th June and 17th June.
Nominations close Thursday 5th June at 9.00am with GRSA
SHANE MCQUEEN HEATS
The Shane McQueen heats will also been run tonight and it is great to see two heats and some of the best middle distance greyhounds in the State doing battle over the 600m.
The first heat features Wild Soul, Spring Amanda and Doona Bale with a terrific supporting cast.
In heat 2 the exciting Cairnlea Layla will do battle against Big Zap and Fameroo with Cool Promise a nice eachway chance.
With two heats tonight the first four from each heat will qualify for next week’s final which carries total prizemoney of $6,875.
LUNA JINX AT SANDOWN TONIGHT
South Australia’s premier stayer Luna Jinx has been transferred from the Mclaren Vale kennels of Gavin Harris into the care of Victorian trainer Len Ketelaar for a tilt at a multitude of feature races in the Garden State. The SA Bred star stayer won a heat of the Grade 5 715m at Sandown on Sunday and looks a raging hot favourite tonight in the Final. She has drawn box 3 in race 2 due to start at 6.55pm (SA Time) and we wish her and her connections the best of luck.
TODD KELLY UNSTOPPABLE AT GAWLER
The month of May should be one to remember for trainer Todd Kelly who is having a purple patch of form especially at Gawler. His exciting litter of Spring Gun and Flame McBain pups have been dominating the 400m and 531m at Gawler with Todd recording two lots of 4 winners and a treble recently. Yesterday at Angle Park he also secured a treble to make it a big month of racing. With his team flying at present anything with the suffix of “McBain” should be right in the money for the Kelly kennel.
GRSA PARTICIPANT RETURNS CONTINUE TO GROW
Returns to South Australian greyhound participants will increase for the eighth consecutive year, after the GRSA Board approved a 4.13% increase to total returns in the 2014/15 financial year. The increase will add an additional $254,000 to industry returns, which incorporates stakemoney, trainers rebate, SA bred bonuses and the popular breeders’ rebate scheme. Total industry returns will exceed $6.4 million in the next racing season.
Key changes to GRSA participant returns include:
- A major change to all Category 3 meetings with stakemoney to be tiered by Grade type, resulting in a 9.1% increase to the category
- An increase to the trainers rebate to $30 per trainer and $5 per greyhound (currently $25 per trainer)
- A 3.6% increase to base level metropolitan stakemoney on Thursday nights
- Special Events (including heats and semi-finals) and all Finals to carry the same stakemoney as Free-For-All events
- Increase to the Cup allocation for Mt Gambier and Strathalbyn resulting in total stakemoney for these events of $10,000
Changes to the stakemoney framework will commence on 1st July 2014. Please refer to the GRSA website for full details of these changes.
GOTBA COURSING STAKEMONEY & RACING SCHEDULE
With the increased nominations GOTBA have been able to attract at their first two meetings this season they have put a structure in place for the rest of the season.
Commencing with the next meeting scheduled for this Sunday, the GOTBA will only race 4-dog events for very young greyhounds just starting their racing career. To enable them to compete against their own age group, the Club will provide the opportunity for a greyhound to win a maiden event, and 4 juvenile events before it progresses to a Novice event.
All greyhounds just starting racing are entitled to compete in a 4-dog event – Juvenile/Maiden and a young greyhound can then compete in a Juvenile and will be permitted to win up to 4 Juvenile races. Juvenile events are for greyhounds under 2 years old at the time of nomination.
Greyhounds who have raced on the circle but who have never competed in field coursing are eligible for a Maiden event, these will be 8-dog events and every attempt will be made to grade “like” with “like”, however this will be dependent upon the number of nominations received.
Prizemoney will now be
4-dog event Winner $120, Runner-Up $40 Nomination fee : $8
8-dog event Winner $190, Runner-Up $70 Nomination fee : $10
Feature events will be the 2014 SA Waterloo Cup, SA Oaks and SA Derby – all these events are for 16 dogs and prizemoney schedules will be released closer to the events.
Of course, if the Club only receives 4 nominations for a specific event, this event will be run as a 4-dog race, e.g. 4 open nominations. The Club is most appreciative of the support shown by owners/trainers and trusts that this support continues.
MACRO MEATS NEW SPONSOR FOR ADELAIDE CUP
Ray Borda has thrown his support behind the Group 1 Adelaide Cup and signed up as the naming rights sponsor for SA’s flagship event. This year the Macro Meats Group 1 Adelaide Cup will be run on Friday 10th October for the first time and its great to have Ray on board. Ray has been a terrific sponsor of greyhound racing in Australia with his Macro Meats brand and has committed to not only the Adelaide Cup series but also sponsorship of all clubs in SA along with significant track signage.
65 ROSES CAMPAIGN IN FULL SWING THIS MONTH
Greyhound Racing SA and Greyhound Racing NSW have joined forces in supporting Cystic Fibrosis for the month of May. As part of the campaign GRSA will donate $250 for every red rug winner at all Angle Park meetings staged throughout May. So on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the number 1 greyhound has an even greater incentive to win and assist a worthy cause. Already there is $4,750 heading to Cystic Fibrosis with 19 winners so far this month from Box 1.
GRADE 6 RACING IN SA
We have updated the GRSA website in the Racing section regarding Grade 6 racing in SA. We have put some answers to commonly asked questions by trainers in an attempt to assist trainers planning a program from Maiden through to Grade 5. If there are more questions please feel free to contact the Grading Department at GRSA.
UPDATED GRADING GUIDELINES
After recent consultation with the Grading Review Panel the Grading Guidelines have been updated to clarify policies already applied by the Grader. This is available at Angle Park and available on the GRSA website. The points are listed below–
Grade 6 – This has been updated about not only 5NP races but also if a Grade 6 dog wins a Grade 5 event on Monday and Thursday making it a Grade 5 dog it shouldn’t lose all of its Grade 6’s as it only becomes a Grade 5.
Grade 5 or Above – this has been included and detailed what a Grade 5 or above is.
Interstate Greyhounds – this refers to if an SA Owned greyhound races in Interstate as to what grade it comes back as and when is it considered Interstate.
National Policy is “a greyhound to have been domiciled in South Australia for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the nominations closing date is considered SA”
Grade 6 Eligibility – this advises about what is considered to be a sprint event
Please take note with greyhounds moving backwards and forwards from State to State the Grading Guidelines will apply each time the greyhound returns.
GAWLER DEVELOPMENT TO START SHORTLY
Shortly the starting date of the new Gawler development will be released anticipated to be early next month. The development should last until around the end of October and the venue ready for the Gawler Cup series later that month. With the work required at the venue there will be changes to the racing dates. For the new season from the 1st July 2014 Gawler will race on Tuesdays and Sundays every week with work being conducted in between this period. The Strathalbyn Club has advised that they will assist Gawler by moving into a rotation with Mt Gambier on Friday, racing every fortnight. We appreciate the Southern Greyhound Raceways support for this move during this period of development. Trialing at Gawler will be affected. For the remaining part of the season we will have to advise of the necessary changes to accommodate work at the venue when the developers provide their requirements. GRSA appreciates all clubs and staff flexibility during this exciting time for the Industry.
GRADE 4 FEATURE HEATS IN JUNE

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014
Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.
So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30. Renewals will be sent out in early June.
2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION
After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.
There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -
1) Auction Commission
It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.
The 11% is GST inclusive.
The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.
2) Reserve Prices
It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.
Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.
3) Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction
It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction. These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.
The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old. One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction. There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series. This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.
Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.
- The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
