Racing News

TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

What a great night of racing we have tonight.  The 11 event card has a couple of stand outs along with a few even affairs.  We should finish again on the right side of the ledger so we can build the bank for the coming weeks.

Race 1 and this one will be very short.   Incumbent, was only beaten a whisker here on debut in a slick 29.69 behind Fire Tyson from box 7.  Only bad luck would see him beaten.  Add in Wise Chief and the well performed Dyna Gray.  1 from 2.4.8

The second and there is a bit of pace along with a couple who will be rattling home.  I’m going with a run on type in Manila Express.  She has terrific form over the 600m and is back over the sprint here.  Nevada Smith has drawn the pole and looks the likely leader along with Rogue Trader.  Box Up 1.2.3.5

Race 3 is the 700m event of the night and there is at least 5 chances.  All the money will be on Long Gully Surf out in box 7, but he will need to ping and lead for a forward showing.  I think he could be a risk.  But yes I have been wrong before!!!!   Box Up 2.3.4.7 in a very tough race.

Race 4 and it is very hard to split three runners, the 1-2-8 all have a good turn of early pace.  I will stick with winning form and that is Allen Kenny from box 2 for Tony Rasmussen.  Box Up 1.2.4.8.

The 5th event and what a terrific race this is.  It is very hard to go past Dakota Premier as he has 9 wins from 10 starts and has a personal best of 29.57 here, and looks far too smart again.  Box up 3 - from 1.6.7, they are all a chance on their night with luck.

Race 6 and we are looking for a bit of pace.  Jump on Winbrook from box 6 for the Butcher kennel.  He charged home to win here last start in 29.83 from box 8 and has a couple of moderate beginners on his inside.  Boojerooma is well boxed along with Miss Collash.  Box Up 1.3.6.7.

The 7th and Cool Guinness looks the goods.  He has the pace to lead from box 3 and is coming off a last start 29.92 win here for the Corby kennel.  Regal Looper can’t be left out of the calculations as he loves a wide draw.  Box Up 3.6.7.8.

Race 8 and speed to the 1st turn will determine this race.  Fire Tyson and Cairnlea Layla who are racing like their owners are playing (Port Adelaide or Port Power )  IN TERRIFIC  FORM.  Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 9 is the 600m event of the night and it is more than handy.  The Kim Johnstone performer in Wild Soul has the form on the board with a smart 35.03 win here 2 runs back.  He should possie up close and prove far too strong.  Doona Bale won over the sprint last start here and is well drawn out in the pink.  Box Up 1.3.7.8.

Race 10 and get on BIG ZAP in the Murray kennel.  He dwelt on box rise then shot to the front for a handy 10L win here last week in 30.03.  He can go a lot quicker and looks very hard to beat again from box 2, but will be skinny odds.  Box Up 2.4.6.7

The final event and we can go home on a winner her with Major Tonks for Jarrad Murray.  He won on debut here over the short at Gawler 2 weeks ago and is sure to be well tried on his city debut.  He will be very hard to beat.  Sporting Tears and Velocity Breeze both have form and will be right in the mix.  Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Best Bets but they will be very short

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

MEDIA RELEASE - GRSA PARTICIPANT RETURNS CONTINUE TO GROW

Returns to South Australian greyhound participants will increase for the eighth consecutive year, after the GRSA Board approved a 4.13% increase to total returns in the 2014/15 financial year. The increase will add an additional $254,000 to industry returns, which incorporates stakemoney, trainers rebate, SA bred bonuses and the popular breeders’ rebate scheme.  Total industry returns will exceed $6.4 million in the next racing season.

Key changes to GRSA participant returns include:

  • A major change to all Category 3 meetings with stakemoney to be tiered by Grade type, resulting in a 9.1% increase to the category
  • An increase to the trainers rebate to $30 per trainer and $5 per greyhound (currently $25 per trainer)
  • A 3.6% increase to base level metropolitan stakemoney on Thursday nights
  • Special Events (including heats and semi-finals) and all Finals to carry the same stakemoney as Free-For-All events
  • Increase to the Cup allocation for Mt Gambier and Strathalbyn resulting in total stakemoney for these events of $10,000

Changes to the stakemoney framework will commence on 1st July 2014. Please refer to the GRSA website for full details of these changes.

HOWARD ASHTON SEMI FINALS TONIGHT

There are three outstanding semi finals tonight for the Group 3 Howard Ashton after 7 heats were run last Wednesday at Angle Park.

Heat winners from last week were –

Dakota Premier- 29.80

Dakota La Flash – 30.04

Little Dakota – 29.97

Cool Guinness – 29.92

Winbrook – 29.83

Nowak – 30.02

Footrot Fanning – 30.02

With plenty of form in each semi final an upset result could be on the cards if some of the favourites are not on their game tonight as each greyhound looks to qualify for next week’s Final.

As there are three Semi-Finals the first two from each semi final and the two fastest third placegetters will qualify for next weeks final. The box draw will take place on track tonight, following race 8.

The 2014 Howard Ashton Final is a Group 3 event, with total prizemoney of $36,000. It is the main race series of Breeders 2014.

Breeders 2014 has one further series to follow the Howard Ashton. That will be Gawler Breeders 2014 to be run on the 10th June and 17th June.

GOTBA COURSING STAKEMONEY & RACING SCHEDULE

With the increased nominations GOTBA have been able to attract at their first two meetings this season they have put a structure in place for the rest of the season.

Commencing with the next meeting scheduled for 1 June, the GOTBA will only race 4-dog events for very young greyhounds just starting their racing career.  To enable them to compete against their own age group, the Club will provide the opportunity for a greyhound to win a maiden event, and 4 juvenile events before it progresses to a Novice event.

All greyhounds just starting racing are entitled to compete in a 4-dog event – Juvenile/Maiden and a young greyhound can then compete in a Juvenile and will be permitted to win up to 4 Juvenile races.  Juvenile events are for greyhounds under 2 years old at the time of nomination.

Greyhounds who have raced on the circle but who have never competed in field coursing are eligible for a Maiden event, these will be 8-dog events and every attempt will be made to grade “like” with “like”, however this will be dependent upon the number of nominations received.

Prizemoney will now be

4-dog event   Winner $120, Runner-Up $40    Nomination fee : $8

8-dog event   Winner $190, Runner-Up $70    Nomination fee : $10

Feature events will be the 2014 SA Waterloo Cup, SA Oaks and SA Derby – all these events are for 16 dogs and prizemoney schedules will be released closer to the events.

Of course, if the Club only receives 4 nominations for a specific event, this event will be run as a 4-dog race, e.g. 4 open nominations.    The Club is most appreciative of the support shown by owners/trainers and trusts that this support continues.

MACRO MEATS NEW SPONSOR FOR ADELAIDE CUP

Ray Borda has thrown his support behind the Group 1 Adelaide Cup and signed up as the naming rights sponsor for SA’s flagship event. This year the Macro Meats Group 1 Adelaide Cup will be run on Friday 10th October for the first time and its great to have Ray on board. Ray has been a terrific sponsor of greyhound racing in Australia with his Macro Meats brand and has committed to not only the Adelaide Cup series but also sponsorship of all clubs in SA along with significant track signage.

65 ROSES CAMPAIGN IN FULL SWING THIS MONTH

Greyhound Racing SA and Greyhound Racing NSW have joined forces in supporting Cystic Fibrosis for the month of May. As part of the campaign GRSA will donate $250 for every red rug winner at all Angle Park meetings staged throughout May. So on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the number 1 greyhound has an even greater incentive to win and assist a worthy cause. Already there is $3,250 heading to Cystic Fibrosis with 13 winners so far this month from Box 1.

SUPPORT OF SERVICE PROVIDERS DOCUMENT AVAILABLE

From the last ICG meeting it was agreed that GRSA would provide a document to assist participants entering into agreements with clients. This Service Providers document is now available on the GRSA website under the Trainers section.

GAWLER DEVELOPMENT TO START SHORTLY

Shortly the starting date of the new Gawler development will be released anticipated to be early next month. The development should last until around the end of October and the venue ready for the Gawler Cup series later that month. With the work required at the venue there will be changes to the racing dates. For the new season from the 1st July 2014 Gawler will race on Tuesdays and Sundays every week with work being conducted in between this period. The Strathalbyn Club has advised that they will assist Gawler by moving into a rotation with Mt Gambier on Friday, racing every fortnight. We appreciate the Southern Greyhound Raceways support for this move during this period of development. Trialing at Gawler will be affected. For the remaining part of the season we will have to advise of the necessary changes to accommodate work at the venue when the developers provide their requirements. GRSA appreciates all clubs and staff flexibility during this exciting time for the Industry.

FEATURE RACES AT PORT AUGUSTA IN THE COMING MONTHS
On Saturday the club will feature the Patron’s Cup over the 447m before the Port Augusta Cup Carnival kicks off on Saturday 7th June with the heats followed two weeks later with the $3,000 Port Augusta City Council Final. Keep up to date with all the feature races by grabbing a copy of the May and June All Tracks Calendar.

SHANE MCQUEEN MEMORIAL NEXT WEEK
The main 600m feature at Angle Park comes up next week on Thursday 29th May with the running of the heats of the Shane McQueen Memorial. This series has always been well supported by the Industry with 3 or 4 heats normally run. The Final will be held on Thursday 5th June and will be worth $6,875.
Nominations close on Monday 26th May with GRSA at 9.00am

GRADE 4 FEATURE HEATS IN JUNE
The next low grade feature to be run at Angle Park will be Grade 4 Heats to be run on Thursday 12th June with the Final on Thursday 19th June.

The heats are worth $3,240 and the final will be $4,265.
Nominations close on Friday 6th June at 9.00am with GRSA due to the June long weekend.

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014

Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.

So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30. Renewals will be sent out in early June.

VETERANS RACE CONDITIONS

To help encourage Veteran’s races GRSA has opened up the conditions to allow for greyhounds now 3 ½ years or older to compete. The 4yo or older greyhounds will still receive preference but now those other greyhounds can be considered and will only be included in age order (older greyhounds first). Greyhounds must still have raced or qualified in the previous 3 months. These races are all Non Penalty and recently we have started programming 388m and 400m events and in the next few months we will also run FFA’s and also Grade 5’s.

It is important that if you have an eligible greyhound that you nominate for a “Veterans” event programmed but also put an alternate preference just in case there are not enough Veterans to make up a race.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
