TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

What a tough week in racing for tipsters, especially me!!   If you can talk the talk you can walk the walk and I did neither.  Now let’s try to pick a winner or two tonight.

Race 1 and we will keep it very simple.  The two main chances are the 2 and the 3.  They are both more than capable of winning.  Box up 1.2.3.8

Race 2 and even I couldn’t stop him winning.  Dakota Premier, he is in outstanding form with 7 wins from 8 starts but will be very short.  Have him as a stand out.  6 from 3.5.7.

The third and the classy Luna Jinx should be over her Melbourne trip and should bounce back into the winners circle from box 1 and carve out a quick time.  Husky Dreamer and Zara McLaren can fill the placing’s.

The fourth and I tipped him last week and yes he didn’t win.  The Petar Jovanovic trained Benchmark.  I won’t give up that easy and will go with him again, (sorry Pete).  Add in Allen Gordy and Teddy Tool for the placing’s.  Box up 1.2.5.6.

Race 5 is a very good 600m event with several chances but the Power is in form so is Cairnlea Layla.  She is owned by several of the Black and Teal and she should ping and win.  Manila Express is on song and is another who is well drawn down in box 1.  Box up 1.2.4.7.

Race 6 and this is an outstanding sprint race and with my judgement I have tipped Fire Tyson from box 7.  He should carve across from the wide draw and win.  Mr. Donatello and Dustnado all have pace and will be the mix.  Box up 4.6.7.8.

Race 7 and I am looking for a little bit of value as my confidence is a little down and don’t forget the wallet.  Let’s get on the well named Very Bitta for Murray Harvey.  He is more than capable of leading here from the wide draw.  Add in Encosta Kahn who is in outstanding form along with Kalden Gambino.  Box up 1.3.6.8.

The 8th and I am going with pace and that is Lylas who carved out a 30.07 win here last week from box 7 leading throughout. Smash Crash and Wonder Whirl all have speed and will figure in the mix. Box up 1.4.6.7.

Race 9 and it is very hard to go past the handy youngster in Punishment.  He has a clean sheet with 3 from 3 starts and will take a power of beating again for Carole Scott, despite the draw of 4.  Add in Nevada Smith and Mobius for the minors.  Box Up 1.2.4.8.

The 10th and Fancy Rick has good form since being on the mainland.  He has pace and will be very hard to beat from the inside draw of 3.  Power Merc will be running on late out wide.   Box Up 3.4.5.8.

The last is a very hard race to go home on.  There are a heap of chances.  I threw the dart and ended up with Gilbert Allen.  He finds himself in a little easier company but needs to improve his box manners.  Sprig Amanda is in good form along with Velocity Lyrem from box 1.  Good luck Box Up 1.2.4.6.8

2014 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON – NOMINATIONS CLOSE TOMORROW
The major race in Breeders 2014 is the Group 3 Howard Ashton. Trainers are reminded that the heats will be run on Wednesday 14th May. These will be followed by the Semi-Finals on May 22nd and the Final on May 29th. Prizemoney will be determined by the number of races run. The race is for greyhounds that are eligible for Breeders 2014. Greyhounds don’t have to have competed in the Preludes to run in the Group 3 Howard Ashton.
* Nominations close on tomorrow (Friday 9th May) with GRSA at 9.00am.

LOW GRADE FEATURE FINALS TONIGHT

Tonights bumper program at Angle Park tonight features two $4,265 finals for the Juvenile’s and SA Owned Grade 5’s. The Juvenile final is race 2 and with only one heat last week all the greyhounds have progressed to tonight’s final. The heat winner was Dakota Premier who made it seven wins from eight starts when he won by 2 lengths in 29.89. He looks very hard to hold out again.

In the SA Owned final it is a more open affair with heat winners being Lylas (30.07), Wonder Whirl (29.93.) and Charmed Assassin (29.97). It is race 8 on the program and should provide an interesting betting affair.

The next Low Grade Feature Series will be for Grade 4 greyhounds over the 515m to be run with heats on Thursday 12th June and final on Thursday 19th June.

Nominations close at 9.00am with GRSA on Friday 6th June.

65 ROSES CAMPAIGN IN MAY

Greyhound Racing SA and Greyhound Racing NSW have joined forces in supporting Cystic Fibrosis for the month of May. As part of the campaign GRSA will donate $250 for every red rug winner at all Angle Park meetings staged throughout May. So on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the number 1 greyhound has an even greater incentive to win and assist a worthy cause. Already there is $750 heading to Cystic Fibrosis with Remember Cestria and Chemical Maker winning on Monday night and Springvale Kerry yesterday all from the red box.

GAWLER DEVELOPMENT TO START SHORTLY

Very shortly the starting date of the new Gawler development will be released anticipated to be the middle or later this month. The development should last until around the middle of October and the venue ready for the Gawler Cup series later that month.

With the work required at the venue there will be changes to the racing dates. For the new season from the 1st July 2014 Gawler will race on Tuesdays and Sundays every week with work being conducted in between this period. The Strathalbyn Club has advised that they will assist Gawler by moving into a rotation with Mt Gambier on Friday, racing every fortnight. We appreciate the Southern Greyhound Raceways support for this move during this period of development. Trialing at Gawler will be affected.

For the remaining part of the season we will have to advise of the necessary changes to accommodate work at the venue when the developers provide their requirements. GRSA appreciates all clubs and staff flexibility during this exciting time for the Industry.

DOG COATS ONCOURSE FROM VICTORIA ON 12TH MAY

Jenny Gill from Victoria will be oncourse at Angle Park on Monday 12th May from 4.00pm with ordered dog coats. She has around 160 orders to supply on the night. She will also be able to take orders and sell coats to oncourse trainers.

She will be situated underneath near the kennel house.

GAWLER TWILIGHT ON MAY 13

The Gawler meeting on Tuesday 13th May is a Twilight meeting to fit in with Sky Racing scheduling. The meeting will be broadcast on Sky Racing 1 with the first race at 3.14pm and the last of 11 at 6.09pm:

Trials at Angle Park on this night will not be affected.

FEATURE RACES AT PORT AUGUSTA IN THE COMING MONTHS
With only a few more meetings to go until the end of the season the Port Augusta GRC have plenty of feature races on offer. Their next meeting will be conducted this weekend (Saturday 11th May) with 7 races programmed.

On Saturday 24th May the club will feature the Patron’s Cup over the 447m before the Port Augusta Cup Carnival kicks off on Saturday 7th June with the heats followed two weeks later with the $3,000 Port Augusta City Council Final. Keep up to date with all the feature races by grabbing a copy of the May and June All Tracks Calendar.

MORE TRIALING OPPORTUNIES

After the most recent ICG meeting it was advised that the opportunites for trainers to trial their greyhounds at race meetings be increased where possible. This is mainly for those trainers travelling long distances to get to a race meeting.

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014

Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.

So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30. Renewals will be sent out in early June.

VETERANS RACE CONDITIONS

To help encourage Veteran’s races GRSA has opened up the conditions to allow for greyhounds now 3 ½ years or older to compete. The 4yo or older greyhounds will still receive preference but now those other greyhounds can be considered and will only be included in age order (older greyhounds first). Greyhounds must still have raced or qualified in the previous 3 months. These races are all Non Penalty and recently we have started programming 388m and 400m events and in the next few months we will also run FFA’s and also Grade 5’s.

It is important that if you have an eligible greyhound that you nominate for a “Veterans” event programmed but also put an alternate preference just in case there are not enough Veterans to make up a race.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
