Racing News

TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

It looks a very interesting night for all punters tonight.  We kick off another months of racing.  In recent weeks we have been on song so there is no reason that we can’t keep the ball rolling.

Race 1 and Kapalos won from this draw in a more than handy 29.82 here last start, leading throughout and there is no reason she can’t win again with her early pace.  Add in the outside brigade for the placing’s in Wild Soul and Mel Allen who will be running on.  Box Up 1.3.7.8.

The 2nd event and this one will start very short.  Dakota Premier has been in terrific form of late and should just lead and win.  There are several contenders for the placing’s.  Let’s go with 3 as a stand out from 2-5-6.

Race 3 and lets back number 1 again, Cool Guinness.  He carved out a handy 30.14 from box 5 last start coming from midfield and can go a lot quicker.  Nevada Smith has pace and let’s add in a bit of value with a newcomer in Bally Swift.  Box Up 1.2.6.7.

Race 4 and this is a terrific betting race.  Benchmark is well drawn to run a very cheeky race out in box 7 and is more than capable here.  Wonder Whirl has pace out in box 8 along with Burra Badgirl.  Box Up 1.6.7.8.

Race 5 and the Leanne Fagan trained sprinter in Contrarian can bounce back into the winners circle and lead them a merry dance from box 3, Springvale Cosmo is a tardy beginner but will be rattling home late from the rails.  Add in Victa Victoria and Lylas and we shouldn’t miss the Trifecta.  Box Up 1.3.6.7.

The 6th on the card and I’m looking for pace in this so let’s have a wager on Dee Dee Corsair from box 2.  He has moderate beginner’s either side and will be very hard to beat.  Box Up 1.2.7.8.

The 2nd half of the programme is race 7 and we should be that far in front at this point we will be sitting with our wallets on the table as they should be too full to have them in our back pockets.  It appears a two dog race but I have been wrong before, according to my wife!!  Box up 1.2.6.7 and I will have a wager on Wise Chief.

Race 8 now this is a very good race with a heap of chances.  There is a lot of pace out wide who will be crashing across so Galilee Spirit can run a cheeky race from box 2, he carved out a slick 29.62 run here last start.  Fire Tyson and Very Bitta along with the Port Power owned Cairnlea Layla are all very pacey.  Box Up 2.4.6.7 in a top betting affair.

Race 9 and this is a special for mine so load up on Kalden Balerion, despite the draw he can lead and win here.  The dangers if any are Buzz Kahn and Kankakee McLaren.  Box Up 1.2.5.8.

The 10th and another box 5 runner in Mepunga Aztec should figure.  He has the form and the ability to win again.  Doona Bale and Dyna Paul all have claims.  Box Up 1.5.7.8.

The last event and this is a very tough affair.  Let’s hope we are a mile in front so we can just have a little trifecta.  Box Up 2.3.7.8.

Best Bets, I have several      -           Race 2 number 3 Dakota Premier

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

65 ROSES CAMPAIGN STARTS TONIGHT

Greyhound Racing SA and Greyhound Racing NSW have joined forces in supporting Cystic Fibrosis for the month of May. As part of the campaign GRSA will donate $250 for every red rug winner at all Angle Park meetings staged throughout May. So on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the number 1 greyhound has an even greater incentive to win and assist a worthy cause.

In NSW this will occur at every greyhound meeting in their state for May.

GAWLER DEVELOPMENT TO START SHORTLY

Very shortly the starting date of the new Gawler development will be released anticipated to be the middle or later this month. The development should last until around the middle of October and the venue ready for the Gawler Cup series later that month.

With the work required at the venue there will be changes to the racing dates. For the new season from the 1st July 2014 Gawler will race on Tuesdays and Sundays every week with work being conducted in between this period. The Strathalbyn Club has advised that they will assist Gawler by moving into a rotation with Mt Gambier on Friday, racing every fortnight. We appreciate the Southern Greyhound Raceways support for this move during this period of development. Trialing at Gawler will be affected.

For the remaining part of the season we will have to advise of the necessary changes to accommodate work at the venue when the developers provide their requirements. GRSA appreciates all clubs and staff flexibility during this exciting time for the Industry.

LOW GRADE FEATURE HEATS TONIGHT AT ANGLE PARK

Tonight at Angle Park there are two heat and final series culminating in $4,265 finals next week at headquarters. There is only one heat of the Juvenile so all competitors tonight will also compete in next weeks final. There are three heats of the SA Owned Grade 5 series so the first two placegetters from each race and the two fastest third placegetters will qualify for the final.

The next Low Grade Feature Series will be for Grade 4 greyhounds over the 515m to be run with heats on Thursday 12th June and final on Thursday 19th June.

Nominations close at 9.00am with GRSA on Friday 6th June.

GOTBA COURSING STARTS ON SUNDAY

A reminder to participants that GOTBA Coursing starts this Sunday with the Club experiencing excellent support with around 70 greyhounds nominated. It should make for a terrific day at Virginia on Sunday.

Please be mindful that due to minor works being conducted at Virginia tomorrow and Saturday prior to Sundays meeting the use of the venue may be limited.

GAWLER FUTURE STARS FINAL ON TUESDAY

With only one heat of the Gawler Future Stars run last Tuesday all of those greyhounds will compete in the final this Tuesday. The Final is worth $2,450 and should see the placegetters from the heat in Mombasa Boy, Wingard and Rajas Ogre again hardest to beat.

PORT AUGUSTA NEWS

Greyhound Racing during May

The Port Augusta Greyhound Club races twice this month at Chinnery Park, Port Augusta West. On Saturday 10th May the Anniversary Cup and the Port Augusta Recyclers 447m Feature will be run. A fortnight later on Saturday 24th May the club will hold its second meeting in the month with the Ian’s Chicken Hut 503m, as well as the Patron’s Cup being run.

The Anzac Day meeting was most successful with local trainer, Ken Newlyn scoring his first treble at Chinnery Park. Ken is supported by his wife Nicole who often presents their dogs on race day. Brenton Cleggert (from Laura) scored a winning double with the consistent Red Norm and distance greyhound Red Hot Cherry. Regular attendee Kel Stott, from Balaklava, scored with Ticka at good odds.

The last race on the nine event programme was a dead heat. The camera could not split Poetic Mover trained by Don Turner and Ken Newlyn’s Charlie Prize.

It was good to see some regular supporters back on track, both Bobby Digance and Peter Slater from Broken Hill returning after bouts of illness. While “Packy” was back calling the races after an overseas trip.

DOG COATS ONCOURSE FROM VICTORIA ON 12TH MAY

Jenny Gill from Victoria will be oncourse at Angle Park on Monday 12th May from 4.00pm with ordered dog coats. She has around 160 orders to supply on the night. She will also be able to take orders and sell coats to oncourse trainers.

She will be situated underneath near the kennel house.

GAWLER TWILIGHT ON MAY 13

As advertised the Gawler meeting on Tuesday 13th May has been moved from a Day meeting to a Twilight meeting after a request from Sky Racing. The meeting will be broadcast on Sky Racing 1 with the first race at 3.14pm and the last at 6.09pm:

Trials at Angle Park on this night should not be affected.

GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON HEATS ON 14TH MAY

After two excellent Prelude series for Breeders 2014 the eligible greyhounds will now turn their attention to the Group 3 Howard Ashton series. The heats will be run on Wednesday 14th May, semi finals on Thursday 22nd May and then the $36,000 final on Thursday 29th May.

Nominations close at 9.00am with GRSA on Friday 9th May.

MORE TRIALING OPPORTUNIES

After the most recent ICG meeting it was advised that the opportunites for trainers to trial their greyhounds at race meetings be increased where possible. This is mainly for those trainers travelling long distances to get to a race meeting.

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014

Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.

So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30. Renewals will be sent out in early June.

TREATMENT BOOKS

Treatment Books are now available on the GRSA website. Simply log on and go to the Trainers page to find a link for “Treatment Record Book”. There are quite a few pages there so make sure you have plenty of paper in the printer. (most pages are extras at the back) Some of our helpful staff at GRSA should be able to help you if you are having trouble downloading.

VETERANS RACE CONDITIONS

To help encourage Veteran’s races GRSA has opened up the conditions to allow for greyhounds now 3 ½ years or older to compete. The 4yo or older greyhounds will still receive preference but now those other greyhounds can be considered and will only be included in age order (older greyhounds first). Greyhounds must still have raced or qualified in the previous 3 months. These races are all Non Penalty and recently we have started programming 388m and 400m events and in the next few months we will also run FFA’s and also Grade 5’s.

It is important that if you have an eligible greyhound that you nominate for a “Veterans” event programmed but also put an alternate preference just in case there are not enough Veterans to make up a race.

EXOTIC BETTING FOR DAY MEETINGS
Punters please be aware that all South Australian day meetings covered by TattsBet have their exotics the same as twilight and night
meetings which means that the Quadrella is now on races 5 to 8.

It also looks like we have fixed odds on Wednesdays at Angle Park meaning that every Angle Park meeting has fixed odds available.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
