TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Well I hoped you all followed me last week as the Shadow was definitely on fire and picked 7 winners straight.  So don’t double up tonight because my luck has probably run out.  But let’s see if we can get a winner or two on an interesting programme.

Race 1 and he can kick us off like he did last week.  Encosta Kahn charged home to beat Avid Tyson in 29.97 from box 8.  They look the one, two again.  Add in Benchmark who has the perfect draw out in box 8 as he looks a special for eachway punters at handy odds.  Box Up 1.5.6.8.

Race 2 and this looks an open betting affair.  I have gone with Power Merc down in box 2.  From the Angela Modra Kennel she flew home late at Gawler last start and can run a cheeky race in this.  Nippa Norris is well boxed also.  Box Up 1.2.3.6.

The 3rd event and jump on the 3 runner in Fun For All for Petar Jovanovic.  She won here 2 runs back in 30.00 from box 5 and will find this more to her liking.  Dyna Gray has the paw on the till along with Kalden Crixus.  Box up 3.4.5.8.

Race 4 and how good is Rulebook.  He gave his rivals a galloping lesson here last week when breaking the track record and beating the same field by over 13L.  Will win again.  Box Up 1as a stand out from 5.7.8.

The 5th and another good thing in Cairnlea Layla.  She has won her 5 starts here all in slick times and should make it 6 on end.  Take 7 as a stand out from 1.4.8.

Race 6 and there look to be two main chances.  Dyna Quistis and Mel Allen, with the latter having the pace to cross so she gets the nod.  Box Up 1.2.3.7 in a very open betting race.

Race 7 is a pretty even lot.  There are at least 4 chances, the 2 and the 3 will start the punters elect and are both well drawn.  They have the pace to be prominent early.  If you are looking for value for the trifecta add in Kennington Oval.  He can be hit and miss early but is strong.  Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 8 and Fire Tyson has struck form of late winning his past 3 in a row here and at Gawler, all in quick times.  He is the measuring stick.  Add in Chemical Maker along with Contrarian and that appears the trifecta.  Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 9 is another open affair.  Todd Kelly has a handy one in Gun McBain who won from this draw 3 runs back in 30.39 and is coming of a 30.13 win here last start.  Box Up 1.3.6.7.

The tenth event and good luck in this as there are a lot of chances.  Lester Harris has the inform Mindcette who has 2 wins on the trot along with the Lisa Rasmussen trained Dyna Oulan down in box 1.  Box Up the inside four 1.2.3.4.

The final event and an absolute special is the Laurie Cahalan sprinter in Mepunga Aztec from box 6.  He is very hit and miss on box rise but is strong.  Box Up 1.2.6.7.

LUNA JINX IN AT SANDOWN TONIGHT

South Australia’s most exciting stayer Luna Jinx for Gavin Harris has made the trip to Sandown tonight to take on the Vic’s in a final worth $7,200 to the winner. Luna Jinx won her heat impressively last Sunday and is the raging hot favourite for tonight however she has drawn box 7 and would need to find the rails quickly against a strong line up. She is all class so expect her to be rocketing home up the inside in the final straight to claim victory. She is in Race 4 due to start at 7.38pm (SA time).

The other big feature on Saturday night at Wentworth Park is the Group 1 Association Cup and all eyes will be on Victorian super star Xylia Allen who set the Wentworth Park track alight last week recording a track record 41.53 for the 720m journey. She has been breaking track records with regularity recently and the good judges believe she can go quicker so its definitely not a race to be missed.

GROUP 2 BENDIGO CUP FINAL ON SUNDAY

Last night the heats of the Bendigo Cup were held with another track record falling to the outstanding Black Magic Opal.  He sizzled around the track in a blistering 23.417 eclipsing Grigorieva Bale’s record. The final on Sunday however looks to be an exceptional event with the best one turn chasers in the land competing for the $42,000 to the winner Final.

Heat winners were –

Ronan Izmir – 23.855

Paw Licking – 23.610

Deadly Vane – 23.524

RULEBOOK BREAKS 9YO RECORD

Last Thursday at Angle Park history was made when Rulebook for trainer Troy Murray broke the 600m track record which had stood for over 9 years.

The son of Premier Fantasy and Umbrella had already made a huge impression on the local racing scene since coming from Western Australia with a blistering 29.26 win over the 515m and then a flying 34.87 at headquarters when he debut over the 600m. In a heat of the mixed 4/5 event Rulebook toyed with his rivals, leading throughout from box 1 and winning by more than 13 lengths but it was the time than everyone wanted to see. He ran a sizzling 34.35 for the 600m bettering the previous mark of 34.44 set by Explosive Flash in March of 2005. His splits were 8.81, 21.38, 34.35 compared with Explosive Flash’s 8.94, 21.52, 34.44. Troy Murray knows how to get the best out of Western Australian greyhounds highlighted by the outstanding success he had with past Greyhound of the Year Kalden Mayhem and it looks like Rulebook has the ability to fill those very big shoes.

Fast times and track records continue in SA with Rulebook last week over 600m, Casmac over 388m, Avid Tyson at Gawler over 400m, Dub Me In over 512m and Slipper’s Might over 400m at Mt Gambier recently.

MORE TRIALING OPPORTUNIES

After the most recent ICG meeting it was advised that the opportunites for trainers to trial their greyhounds at race meetings be increased where possible. This is mainly for those trainers travelling long distances to get to a race meeting.

LICENSE RENEWALS EXTENDED UNTIL 30TH JUNE 2014

Please be advised that you will now have until 30th June 2014 to renew your license. GRSA has made the change to fall in line with the rest of Australia and also accommodate the Ozchase system.

So the 30th June is the new date however it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as these were issues last year and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30. Renewals will be sent out in early June.

PORT AUGUSTA NEWS

ANZAC Day Greyhounds

The feature event of The Port Augusta Greyhound Club’s Anzac Day Meeting is The Commonwealth Hotel 682 metre event. Racing starts at 1.00pm on Friday at Chinnery Park. Day meetings will continue until the warmer December weather.

At the last twilight meeting the club was able to support the McGrath Breast Cancer Foundation, while the Quorn/ Willsden Football Club sponsored and attended the other March meet.

Local trainer Ken Newlyn and his wife Nicole had three winners at the two March meetings.  Yvonne Maxwell from Whyalla won with White Roller at both meets.

Both Peter Smith (with Maori Winslow and Five Foot Thor) and Don Turner (with Dan Holder and Panic King) scored a double.

The best two runs for March were Hot Wifey (trained by Alisha Sutherland) and Roffer Ronnie (trained by Kel Stott from Balaklava). Both dogs were well supported and are expected to win more races. Ken Myers’s exciting youngster, Killers Bounty won in 25.54 over 447metres. Brenton Cleggert from Laura had quite a few runners with Red Norm saluting in 25.53 winning by 8 ¾ lengths.

It was good to see “Della” back at the track and to hear that club supporter Bobby Digance, who has been on the sick list, is reported to be much better.

GOTBA COURSING BEGINS IN MAY

A reminder to participants that GOTBA Coursing starts in May this season on 4th May. Normally the club will have a racing date in April however as this was over Easter it was decided to hold off for two weeks.

TREATMENT BOOKS

Treatment Books are now available on the GRSA website. Simply log on and go to the Trainers page to find a link for “Treatment Record Book”. There are quite a few pages there so make sure you have plenty of paper in the printer. (most pages are extras at the back) Some of our helpful staff at GRSA should be able to help you if you are having trouble downloading.

VETERANS RACE CONDITIONS

To help encourage Veteran’s races GRSA has opened up the conditions to allow for greyhounds now 3 ½ years or older to compete. The 4yo or older greyhounds will still receive preference but now those other greyhounds can be considered and will only be included in age order (older greyhounds first). Greyhounds must still have raced or qualified in the previous 3 months. These races are all Non Penalty and recently we have started programming 388m and 400m events and in the next few months we will also run FFA’s and also Grade 5’s.

It is important that if you have an eligible greyhound that you nominate for a “Veterans” event programmed but also put an alternate preference just in case there are not enough Veterans to make up a race.

EXOTIC BETTING FOR DAY MEETINGS
Punters please be aware that all South Australian day meetings covered by TattsBet have their exotics the same as twilight and night
meetings which means that the Quadrella is now on races 5 to 8.

It also looks like we have fixed odds on Wednesdays at Angle Park meaning that every Angle Park meeting has fixed odds available.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
