Tonight's Angle Park Preview

TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Tonight’s 11 event programme has two heats of the West End Distance Championship and three Heats of the West End Anniversary Cup.  The Foster kennel should have a big say in the staying ranks but the sprint is a very even bunch.

Race 1 and it is very hard to go past Right Time.  He charged home to win here last week in 29.96, his only concern is his box manners however class should prevail.  Add in Benchmark who has pace and is right in this. Box up 3.4.5.6.

The 2nd and Des Hockley has Wingard flying and he looks very hard to beat from box 1.  Mr Donatello is an interesting runner when right and will be one for trifecta punters.  Box up 1.3.6.7.

Race 3 and the first of the Distance events.  I have tipped Kaylarikki who is in fine form over the 600m who steps up to the 700m and shouldn’t have any trouble.  McLaren Grace has a good record here and will start close to favourite.  Luna Jinx had big wraps on her but struggled here at debut last week.  Box up 1.5.6.7. in a tough race.

Race 4 and Token McLaren has the form on the board with 6 wins from 7 starts over the journey, and with a PB of 42.89 the only dangers if any look to be Umika Bale and Go Caviar.  Box up 1.2.7.8.

Race 5 is the 600m event and is a first class affair with the first 50m of the race most important.  I have gone with Long Gully Court in box 4, but there is at least 5 chances.  Box Up 4.5.7.8.

Race 6 and the draw hasn’t helped the top favourites in this.  The main chances here have drawn the middle so we should get some nice value.  There is a bit of early pace here so box up 1.5.6.8. in a good race.

Sidney’s Shadow is flying of late and looks very hard to beat from the wide draw in race 7.  Dustnado will be the improver down in box 2.  Emerley Lover is another who is racing well.  Box up 2.5.7.8.

Race 8 and Set The Scene and Fire Tyson should both be charging to the first turn together and whoever leads should prove too strong.  Noble Kahn can add some value for the trifecta punters. Box up 3.5.6.8.

Race 9 and Off My Trout can bounce back with a win here over the sprint, despite the poor draw.  Senni Tony just needs to be handy early to run a cheeky race.  Box up 2.3.4.8.

The 10th and the Kim Johnstone trained Genghis Kahn was a 29.74 winner here 2 runs back from box 7 and looks too strong for these on that gallop.  Nebula and Galaxy Snow are more than handy and can finish in the mix.  Box up 2.3.4.5.

The final event and lets go home on a winner with Dakota Premier, who has the draw and can lead this all the way.  Add in Big Zap and Nevada Smith for the minors.  Box up 1.4.5.8.

DECISION ARISING FROM THE FINISH-ON LURE-CATCHING PEN REVIEW

The Finish-On Lure (FOL) system for pulling up greyhounds post-race was introduced into South Australia in early 2009 and has subsequently been implemented at Angle Park, Gawler and Mount Gambier.

Whilst the FOL system was also being utilised in Queensland at that time, it was removed from that state in early 2011 leaving South Australia as the only national jurisdiction utilising this approach.  It remains the case that the FOL is the methodology of choice for all NZ tracks.

The Management of GRSA recently undertook a comprehensive survey of industry to gauge the current thinking of the industry in relation to this particular aspect of our racing operations.  The survey incorporated feedback from the ICG and was restricted to the pool of registered trainers and breeders given their more intimate knowledge of the operational facets of the sport.  The process generated a response rate of 36%, fairly exceeding any recent comparable exercise with industry, in addition to which a number of written submissions were also received.

In noting that there is still a general preference for the FOL amongst many of the state’s leading trainers, the survey response revealed that the nominal preference for the FOL system had fallen to just 25%, with support for Catching Pens increasing to 73% – two respondents indicated a preference for neither system or had no opinion.  Notwithstanding, it is notable that whilst the pool of FOL supporters is clearly a minority, they are also responsible for providing a majority of overall runners in South Australia.

Industry opinion on this issue has become increasingly divided over the passage of time with many participants holding extreme views either for or against the continuation of this system.  Despite the general preference for the FOL amongst the state’s leading trainers, the Board has a fundamental obligation to govern in the interests of all participants, on which basis it was difficult to ignore a nominal preference for Catching Pens evident on a ratio of almost 3:1.

The Board also considered a number of related issues including the cost of introducing ‘best practice’ Catching Pens, statistical and anecdotal feedback regarding racing injuries, evidence of racing ‘manners’ under each system, the effect that the two approaches have had on interstate transfers and the suitability of the cable lure system for the FOL approach.

In noting the shift of support for Catching Pens that was evident from this survey process, a Catching Pen facility (with run-off) will be constructed at Angle Park for utilisation at all meetings from July 1 or upon completion, whichever is the later date.

On the basis of the support shown by leading trainers for the FOL system, the significant costs associated with implementing and operating Catching Pens and other factors militating for its retention, the Board has decided to retain the FOL system at Gawler in an effort to preserve an opportunity for the ongoing utilisation of that methodology.

An announcement regarding the future methodology at Mount Gambier will be made pursuant to discussion with the Committee of that Club in the weeks immediately ahead. The Board considers this strategy to represent its final decision on this matter and has no plans for ongoing periodical review.

WEST END DRAUGHT DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP & WEST END DRAUGHT ANNIVERSARY CUP HEATS

Two heats of the West End Draught Distance Championship & three heats of the West End Draught Anniversary Cup have been drawn for tonight’s meeting at Angle Park. Featured on a bumper 11 race program the West End Draught Distance Championship heats over the 731m journey had 16 nominations for the series compared to 17 nominations last year drawing together  two terrific heats for the stayers.

The first heat is race 3 on tonight’s program due to jump at 7.26pm (SA time) and features the 2012 SA Distance Greyhound of the Year Abdon Bale making his return to the race track after 8 months off with injury. He is a classy customer and by all reports has been trialing nicely so he cannot be taken lightly. Abdon Bale has been matched up against proven staying performer McLaren Grace who gets back early but really rockets home, Dyne Daina who looks the leader again but struggles the last 50m, Kaylarrikki who makes the step up from 600m after two super impressive wins and the up and coming star in Luna Jinx who should be greatly improved after her first 731m run last week. It looks a good one on paper.

The second heat features reigning 2013 SA Staying Greyhound of the Year in Token McLaren retuning to the track after a couple of months off. He has broken 43.00 seconds on three occasions over the staying and there is no reason why he won’t be very hard to beat tonight. Challengers look to be Umika Bale who returned to the winners list last week, Go Caviar who has plenty of ability and Long Gully Surf who has very handy Interstate form. Most however, will probably be looking at the time when Token McLaren steps out in race 4.

Joint feature tonight is the heats of the West End Draught Anniversary Cup and what an outstanding line up of local greyhounds we have with the best sprinters in South Australia lining up against each other.

The first heat is race 6 tonight due to start at 8.29pm (SA time) and features the likes of Very Bitta, Chemical Maker, Encosta Kahn and Galilee Spirit all doing battle.

It gets no easier in heat 2 with Lolly Bale, Dustnado, Wild Soul, Bogie Magic, Emerley Lover and recent SA St Leger winner Sidney’s Shadow matched up.

In heat 3 Fire Tyson and Set The Scene wont have it all their own way when they take on Oogaboo Oz, Nasty Ned, Noble Kahn and Kalden Kapone to see who can qualify for the final. Tattsbet have offered a huge $17,000 Trifecta Jackpot on this race so it is worthwhile having a crack with the pool expected to reach $100,000.

With two heats of the Distance it’s pretty straight forward with the first four placegetters progressing through to the final next week (Thursday 13th March).  The box draw will be conducted on course tonight after the running of race 5.

With three heats of the Anniversary Cup it’s a little more complicated with first and second qualifying along with the two fastest third placegetters progressing through to the final next week.  The box draw will be conducted on course tonight after the running of race 9.

2014 MOUNT GAMBIER CUP FINAL

Good luck to Mount Gambier on Sunday with the running of the 2014 Mt Gambier Cup Final. The club ran 7 exciting heats last week and has drawn together a fantastic field to be run on Sunday. Impressive Victorian Veetee Express for trainer Paul Anderton was the fastest qualifier for the final running a blistering 29.80 in last weeks heats for the 512m journey, only .01 outside the track record so a repeat of that will see her hard to beat. With a few locals from the South East, a few locals from Adelaide and a few from across the border the final should be one race not to be missed. Lewiston trainer Don Turner who has supported Mt Gambier in recnt years over their Cup carnival has qualified two greyhounds for this years feature in Stew’s Mistake and Poetic Mover.

Other heat winners were Stew’s Mistake (30.03), Cairnlea Peter (30.18), Striking Viking (30.19), Westlake Prinz (30.33), Poetic Mover (30.25) and Dee Dee Corsair (30.17). Final field listed below –

1.         Striking Viking                       David Peckham

2.         Veetee Express                      Paul Anderton

3.         Dee Dee Corsair                    Robyn Mackellar

4.         Poetic Mover                         Don Turner

5.         Westlake Prinz                      Cassandra Billington

6.         Cryer’s Rudy                          Tom Cryer

7.         Stew’s Mistake                      Don Turner

8.         Cairnlea Peter                                    Peter Hubbard

9.         Damonic                                 Brendan  Bunworth (1st Res)

10.       Rouse Flyer                           Barry Shepheard (2nd Res)

Due to an inputting error the reserve greyhounds have been allocated incorrectly so Rouse Flyer (30.25) will go into the race first if there is a scratching  and then Damonic (30.27) if there are two scratchings based on their heat times.

The $7,000 2014 Mount Gambier Cup Final ($5,000 to the winner) will be run as race 8 at 3.29pm on Sky Racing 2. To give the Club more time with presentations Race 9 will be run at 4.09pm (40 minute gap) and race 10 at 4.27pm.

There are three consolations of the Cup run as races 5, 6 and 7 with the $1,800 The Produce Store Maiden Final run as race 3. There is also a $1,500 Metal Worx Open Feature (400m) run as race 9 and the $2,050 South Eastern Hotel Distance Feature with a field of 7 to be run as race 4 over the staying trip of 732m.

Racing kicks off at 12.53pm, with the last of 10 races to jump at 4.27pm with all races covered on Sky Racing 2 and the SA Tab.

UPCOMING INDUSTRY MEETINGS

As part of the GRSA ‘s Industry consultation we will be meeting with Annual Panels over the coming months. We have listed the next Professional Trainers meeting on Friday March 21 at 9.30am at Gawler to assist trainers who want to race on that day.

The Breeders Task Force will meet on Friday 14th  March at 10.00am at GRSA with the next ICG meeting on Friday 4th April.

CHANGES TO RE-GRADING

With Gawler now being separated and more Grade 6’s available the Grading Review Panel and GRSA have recommended to change the Re-Grading at Gawler  from four to two unsuccessful nominations as there will now only be one race meeting per week.

It was also recommended to extend the Re Grading to all grades and distances. We have only Re Graded about three greyhounds in the last year however this will potentially increase due to the separation. GRSA will publish the Re Graded greyhounds monthly in kennel capers. The updated Re Grading rule is listed below and will start with nominations closing on Monday 3rd March.

Re-grading will be available for all events at all tracks for Grade 3 or higher greyhounds. A trainer can apply for a re-grade after two unsuccessful nominations over the corresponding distance. If having met the criteria the responsibility is on the trainer to apply for a re-grade prior to the close of nominations. Only one distance will be considered for a re-grade per meeting.

For the purposes of this Grading Rule, Angle Park City A, City B and Provincial 2 will be considered as “different tracks” along with Gawler Provincial 1 and Gawler Provincial 2.

ST PATRICK’S DAY SPRINT ON MARCH 20
