TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

As the year rolls on we are already mid-February and tonight we see the final of the SA St Ledger.  This Saturday night is the final of the SA Greyhound of the year, and before we all know it, it will be TAX time.  Sorry to dampen the enthusiasm on the last comment.

Race 1 and we kick off with a tough race.  There are a heap of chances in this.  I have gone with the Todd Kelly trained Jack And Lolli.  She has pace and can run near the low 30’s.  Noble Kahn along with the flying Right Time are all a chance.  Box up 2.4.6.8

The second and the Laurie Cahalan trained Suntory Gold can bounce back from last week’s defeat.  She has been in fine form prior and will be the measuring stick in this.  Dyna Erwin has the rails draw and is right in this along with Dana Sally from the red.  Box up 1.2.4.6

Race 3 and this looks a two dog race between the 1 Fair Change and the 6 Springvale Cool.  They both are in form and can run cheeky races.  I have gone with Fair Change who has the draw.   Box up 1.5.6.8.

This 600m event is a pearler and we see Tercel out in box 7, he can make it two on end after his last start win here in 35.35 over Pedros First.  Those two will be in the top 3 again.  Add in Victa Scott who was never in the hunt last week.  Box up 3.4.6.7.

Race 5 and another tough race, Poetic Mover gets the nod on his recent efforts around South Australia and can run time when on the bunny.  Kennington Oval is working back to his best form and will give this a VERY big shake from box 2.  Box up 2.3.4.8.

The sixth event and I have tipped the inside 3 with Dyna Quistis the top pick, she has pace and should be able to lead and win for the Matcott kennel.  Box up 1.2.3.7.

Race 7 and I am not repeating myself but yes the inside 3 again, and this time in race book order.  All will be charging to the first turn and let’s hope there is no trouble.  Now don’t leave out Encosta Kahn out in box 8.  He might get the run of the race if they jam up.  Box up 1.2.3.8.

The Final of the St Ledger is race 8 and it is very hard to go past Set The Scene on his semi win in a slick 29.66 from box 8.  He can be hit and miss on box rise but should prove the goods here tonight.  Wild Soul will be charging home from box 2 for the Johnstone kennel.  Don’t forget the pacey Sidney’s Shadow who is a class act when on song.  Good Luck too all.  Box up 2.3.4.5.

Race 9, this event is over 731m and the computer isn’t repeating itself or either am I.  Yes Box up 1.2.3.4.

Race 10 and Hairy Bear is my top selection.  He always gives us a run for our money but as I have mentioned in past weeks it’s his poor box manners that are the worry.  Tonight he can carve through early and power home and win.  Box up 2.3.6.7.

The last and the Kim Johnstone kennel can send us home on a winning note with Velocity Fire.  She won here last start from this draw in 30.08 and a repeat performance will do the trick.  Junta Bale and Allen Kenny are the placegetters.  Box up 5.6.7.8.

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

2014 SA ST LEGER FINAL

Last Thursday night at Angle Park there were two terrific Semi Finals of the SA St Leger where the first four placegetters from each Semi-Final qualified for tonight’s feature Final. The fastest qualifier for the Final, which came in the second Semi Final, was the Laurie Cahalan trained Set The Scene who made full use of box 8 to round up his rivals and race away for a strong win in a flying 29.66. He defeated Sidney’s Shadow and Huntress Bale and looks the favourite tonight despite drawing a little awkwardly in box 3.

The first Semi-Final was taken out by the Cameron Butcher trained Boonoona Boy who showed how much he loves the red box by punching through on the first turn to lead throughout and defeat Wild Soul and Broneee. He ran a handy 30.22 however he has been given no favors drawing box 4 in the final. Wild Soul for Kim Johnstone will be looking for back to back feature wins after he won the John Gray Feature last month and after he drew box 2 tonight looks a great chance of achieving that. Both Cameron Butcher and Wendy Matcott did a terrific job to qualify two runners each in tonights feature final.

The $6,875 Feature Final is race 8 on tonight’s program and is listed to jump at 9.11pm (SA time).  TattsBet have added a Trifecta Jackpot of $10,000 to tonight’s final with the Trifecta pool expected to reach over $50,000.

AUSTRALIAN CUP HEATS AT THE MEADOWS SATURDAY NIGHT

The outstanding racing continues on Saturday night at the Meadows with the heats of the Group 1 Australian Cup. There are 8 heats of the Australian Cup with plenty of quality greyhounds amongst the acceptors. In looking at each heat the top chances are very familiar to Group Racing over the last few months with Temlee placegetter Punch One Out the top pick in heat 1 and Peter Rocket hardest to beat in heat 2 after drawing perfectly in box 1. Heat 3 has Hawk Alone engaged dropping back to the 525m after taking out the Rookie Rebel last week over 600m. The fourth heat see’s Paw Licking hardest to beat the fifth heat is an outstanding contest. It features Farmor Las Vegas up against Temlee winner from the West, Zelemar Fever along with the outstanding Banjo Boy and Veyron Bale. Throw in Peleton Bale as the blow out and this heat is one not to be missed.  Dyna Nalin will be looking to add to his impressive CV in heat 6 whilst Spud Regis will be looking to turn back the clock against some quality youngsters in heat 7. The final heat should see Keybow continue on his winning way after victory in the Perth Cup however Tomac Bale will be looking to bounce back to form after having no luck recently.

The other highlight on the night at the Meadows will be 3 heats of the Macro Meats Super Stayers with a terrific line up assembled. Heat 1 chances are Born Ali and Dyna Willow while in heat 2 Dyna Kayla should prove to be too strong. In the final heat kennel mate Cheetah Zorro and Lucy Wires should fight out the finish.

MOUNT GAMBIER CUP CARNIVAL STARTS THIS WEEK

The Mount Gambier Cup Carnival will be run over three weeks, highlighted by the $7,000 Mount Gambier Cup Final on Sunday March 9.  The carnival kicks off this Sunday with two heats of the Produce Store Maiden over 512m with the Final worth $1,800 on March 9. The Mount Gambier Cup Heats will be held next Sunday March 2 with the $7,000 final 7 days later. GAWLER QUEENS CUP FINAL AT GAWLER

There was only the one heat at Gawler Tuesday for the Gawler Queens Cup series however the race brought together some of our best bitches in the state competing over the 531m. Long Gully Court for Paula Hearnden began brilliantly from box 6 to pounce on the early lead and from there was never headed going on to record a soft win by 5 lengths in a solid 30.84. Sheza Diva ran home nicely for second along with race favourite Wonder Whirl who began slowly but got going late to claim third spot.  All eight greyhounds from the heat will go through to the final next Tuesday 25th February worth $2,000.

SEPARATION OF GAWLER STARTED LAST WEEK

The separation of Gawler was introduced last Tuesday. At Gawler the Tuesday (Provincial 1) meeting will be different grading to both Friday and Sunday (Provincial 2). The greyhounds current grade as of Monday was used as the point of separation for both Provincial 1 and Provincial 2 (all clubs). With the introduction of separate grading at Gawler the Grade 6 rules have changed. The changes allow for two more wins at Gawler for SA Bred greyhounds (two tracks) and 1 more win for Non SA Bred greyhounds making it a maximum of 4. With the separation there will be really no more opportunity to“beat the grader”. If as of Monday your greyhound had won all of his/her Grade 6 events then there are no extra races to be won however if you still had Grade 6’s to win then there may be a few more opportunities available. There is no RE-GRADING to make greyhounds eligible for Grade 6 events.

With the introduction of Provincial 1 and Provincial 2 other tracks of same classification have also changed from Provincial. Listed below is how we recognise all tracks in SA.

Angle Park Thursday – City A

Angle Park Monday – City B

Gawler Tuesday – Provincial 1

Angle Park Wednesday – Provincial 2

Gawler Friday – Provincial 2

Gawler Sunday – Provincial 2

Strathalbyn Sunday – Provincial 2

Mt Gambier Friday & Sunday– Provincial 2

Pt Augusta - Country

These races have been reduced from Group 3 status as part of the restructuring of the feature races for 2013/2014.

The honour role for both events is outstanding with last years winners coming from Interstate with Mimicking for trainer Rob Britton from Victoria winning the Distance Championship and Cintiarna for Victorian trainer Sandra Collins taking out the Anniversary Cup.  Heats will be run on Thursday 6th March.
