TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

As we look at tonight’s races I hate to be repeating myself but the fields aren’t too bad.  There are several good betting races.  I think there are at least 3 good things along with several upsets.

Race 1 and the class performer of the race is Genghis Kahn.  He is very strong and has won 4 of his last 5 here both over the sprint and the 600m.  For mine only bad luck would beat him.  Box Up 1 from 4.5.6

Race 2 and this is a very open affair with a heap of early pace.  I like a handy type in Emerley Senorita out in box 7 for the Hurley kennel.  She tends to find trouble but will be at eachway odds.  Tia Belle is the likely leader along with Katz Shadow.  Box Up 1.5.7.8.

The 3rd event and Victa Victoria is back to the sprint and has the draw to kick up and win from box 1.  She has pace and is very strong.  The placing’s look tough so box up 1 from 2.4.7

Race 4 and this is an interesting race with a heap of chances.  When in doubt go with the rails draw and that is Pepper Kahn.  She has her paw on the till and will be very hard to beat.   Kalden Blanco has returned to SA and is sure to be well tried.  Mombasa Boy has pace and is a must for trifecta punters.  Box up 1.3.6.8.

This is a 600m event and I tipped him last week over the sprint, and we collected the cash so Stuzzichino for the Jovanovic kennel is my selection, he is tardy early but strong.  El Tren Bala is smart when on song but has been struggling of late.  Add in Prince Holyfield and Spring Amanda who is VERY well drawn.  Box Up 1.4.5.8

Race 6 and another 600m event with a heap of chances.  The inside 4 all have a chance.  Add in Wot Ya Got as a roughie.  Box Up 1.2.3.4.8  for a half of unit.

Race 7 and if Set The Scene is on song he wins, but he is starting to prove very costly with punters.  Animate is capable of causing an upset and is well drawn on the rails.  Box Up 2.3.5.7

Race 8 and this is a two dog race with Encosta Kahn and Stews Mistake, both are in outstanding form and should be the front runners.  Stop Scrammin’ will be running on late along with Kalden Gambino.  Box Up 3.4.6.8 in a very good betting race.

The 9th event the Distance affair with 5 runners.  Psychotic Gold is the in-form performer along with Long Gully Surf.  They are the main two.  Book Of Shadows is returning to SA from a very short stint in NSW.  Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 10 and I’m am going with the rails draw again with Velocity Daff.  She has been in the money at 3 of her past 4 and looks well suited with box 1.  Shimmering Hood is more than capable and a win wouldn’t be a surprise.  Box Up 1.2.4.5.

The last, Race 11, and load up on Kasai Warrior.  He is a handy sprinter and has only had 4 starts for 2 wins and 2 placing’s.  Is in a strong kennel.  Box Up 2.3.4.5.

2014 GAWLER PRODUCE THIS SUNDAY

Two terrific semi finals were conducted on Tuesday at Gawler for the rich 2014 Gawler Produce series.

The first semi final was taken out by Footluce Diva for trainer Ken Trowbridge who was able to punch through and lead on the first turn from box 1 and from there was able to hold her challengers at bay. She ran a slick 30.63 for the 531m journey and looks to be getting close to her very best form from Victoria. She defeated the Cameron Butcher kennel mates Regal Looper and Boonoona Boy who flashed home for third. Impressive heat winner Punishment for Carole Scott qualified in fourth spot but should be right in the mix on Sunday night after drawing the red box in the final.

The second semi final went the favourite way with Sidney’s Shadow continuing on her merry way for Cameron Butcher with a solid victory in a flying 30.70. She had to work for it however with Wingard for Des Hockley giving her something to chase for much of the journey. Wingard battled on well for second with Sunday Shoes flashing home to grab third just ahead of Dakota Premier who struggled home into fourth after finding some trouble.

Sidney’s Shadow does look the greyhound to beat on Sunday night after drawing box 8 however the final is of the highest quality with some of the most exciting chasers in South Australia competing at the Gawler venue.

The box draw for the 2014 Gawler Produce final was conducted on track:

1.    Punishment                     Carole Scott

2.    Wingard                            Des Hockley

3.    Regal Looper                   Cameron Butcher

4.    Dakota Premier                Colin Simes

5.    Boonoona Boy               Cameron Butcher

6.    Sunday Shoes                 Nathan Wilson

7.    Footluce Diva                  Ken Trowbridge

8.    Sidney’s Shadow           Cameron Butcher

9.    Aston East (res)              Troy Murray

10.  Miss Footluce (res)                     Ken Trowbridge

The $22,000 Gawler Produce final will be run this Sunday night 6th July. The race is listed to jump at 7.02pm (SA time) and will be race 8 on the program with full coverage on Sky Racing 1. Racing on final night starts at 4.32pm with the last of 10 races to be run at 7.46pm. Also featured on the night will be the Anniversary Cup final with Cairnlea Layla a solid favourite.

AGRA CALENDAR RELEASED

The AGRA Calendar of all Group racing has just been released and is available on the GRSA website. Hard copies are also available from Angle Park and other racing venues.

NO PUBLIC TRIALS AT EMERLEY PARK

Due to personal reasons Emerley Park will no longer provide public trialling, rearing or breaking in facilities after 30 June 2014. After nearly 40 years both Judi and Peter have been a significant part of the greyhound scene and it is unfortunate that the property will not be available to the industry.

2014 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The AGRA National Championships are just around the corner. The National Finals this year will be held at Cannington in Western Australia to be conducted on Saturday 23rd August. Both the National Sprint and National Distance Finals will carry prizemoney of $75,000 to the winner.

The State series for SA will be held at Angle Park for the Sprint and Distance on Thursday 31st July for the Heats with the State Finals on the 7th August.

The most important date for local trainers to remember is the national closing date for entries. Acceptances for the National Championships will close with GRSA on Thursday 24th July at 12 noon. Nominations must be on the prescribed form and the conditions of nomination must also be signed. The forms are available at GRSA and on the GRSA website.

A reminder to all trainers of the clause which requires a greyhound to have been domiciled in South Australia for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the National Acceptance Closing date to be eligible to represent SA. If unsure of a greyhound’s status, please contact the GRSA grading staff.

GRSA TRIAL OFFICE TO CLOSE FROM JULY 1ST
The GRSA trial office which is open every Tuesday night will close from 1st July 2014. With Chasers Restaurant also being open on this night and very little patronage upstairs it was decided to maximise our staffing and close one of these areas. GRSA considered closing the Restaurant however after consultation with the AGRC and participants it was agreed that the option for participants to have a place to view the trials in hot or cold weather out weighted the lack of patronage. From the 1st July the trial office will be closed and all trials will need to be paid upstairs in the Restaurant by the staff there. Please be mindful that the staff in the Restaurant will only take the trial money, any racing documentation can be handed to the staff to be updated the next day.

On trial night GRSA receives on average of two phone calls per night so anyone who calls after the normal close of administration will get a recorded message. Race fields will be placed upstairs for viewing by oncourse patrons.

2014 GREYHOUND AUCTION

After receiving feedback from the Industry and panel groups including the Breeders Task Force and Industry Trainers Panel regarding the Greyhound Auction in October, GRSA discussed this feedback with the AGRC. GRSA was very appreciative of the Industry and AGRC regarding the Auction and how the conditions may be altered to assist Breeders and buyers.

There have been some changes listed below which will be incorporated into the conditions -

1)    Auction Commission

It was agreed to reduce the commission from 15% to 11% of the sale price.

The 11% is GST inclusive.

The revised decision was based on feedback provided by Industry Participants and after further consultation with AGRC Management Committee.

2)    Reserve Prices

It was agreed that there will not be any reserves.

Although this option was considered, it was the belief that we wanted to avoid lots being passed in and that a pseudo reserve can be achieved by the Seller by asking someone to bid on their behalf. By reducing the commission it reduces the cost to the Seller to protect the price if they have to buy the pup back because the bidding price was too low. If the Seller does not have someone available to bid on their behalf a member of the AGRC Committee can provide this service.

3)    Extra Races for Pups sold at the Auction

It was agreed that GRSA will schedule two extra heats and final races for pups sold at the auction.  These races can be accommodated within the normal GRSA racing budget.

The main race series Heats and Final are scheduled for May 2016 when the youngest pups will be 24 months old.  One month before (April) there will be a Wednesday 388m series with Heats and Final for pups sold at the auction.  There will also be a Wednesday heats 515m and Final Thursday night 515m held in June the month after the main race series.  This gives the buyer more opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.

Baring in mind that the Auction details have been released for sometime there was only scope to make minor changes to assist all involved. Ultimately only time will tell based on the support that is received from the Industry.

  • The extra conditions for Interstate greyhounds only refers to a grading advantage and has no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
