TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

With no racing at Angle Park we are at the lovely town of Strathalbyn tonight and also looking at Gawler tomorrow. It is sure to be a terrific night of racing at Strath with an 11 event programme where the opening race is a ripper with a guaranteed trifecta pool of $10,000 and the Quadrella looks wide open as well.

Looking at race 1 for the trifecta and the Rasmussen team have several chances tonight and they can kick off with an early winner with Shimatron down in box 2, he has been working towards a win at Headquarters with several placings and the long straights here will make him very hard to beat. Spring Bloom will be rattling home late and is definitely the big danger. Add the pacey Brick Lane and Zipping Gator who will be our value runner for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

We will look at the Quadrella races which are races 5, 6, 7 & 8 on the programme, where we will stick with another Rasmussen runner in Diego Bale. He has been well travelled and looks to have early pace and we will make him our top pick. Matts Boy is a very smart type and loves this venue. Ray Fewings has a handy one in Ecclefechan who knows the circuit backwards. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 6 - this is a toughie as there are 2 mains chances in Aston Hinkley and Majestic Tale so whoever comes out running will be the one to beat over the 319m. Magical Bob will add the value for us for the Trifecta. Box Up 1.2.5.7.

Race 7 - Winning form is good form and it’s very hard to go past Michele Quick in box 4, she has won 4 of her last 5 all over the short and will prove very hard to beat again. Fawn Nova gets her chance to improve from the rails draw and will be making late ground. Box Up 1.2.5.7.

Race 8 - I like the inside 3 in this and the Michael Stewart kennel looks to have the strong hand with Reventon and Curly Magic, both are pacey types and are sure to make their presence felt. Spring Country is the improver and can’t be left out of calculations. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Best Bets - Race 1, No: 2 - Shimatron and Race 7, No: 4 - Michele Quick

Best Each Way - Race 3, No: 1 - Kenzi

Best Roughie - Race 9, No: 1 - Callington

Tips for Strathalbyn tonight

Race 8 – 3.1.2.6
Race 9 – 5.6.1.4
Race 10 – 1.7.8.6
Race 11 – 5.1.6.3

Gawler Friday looks to be first class we have a mammoth 12 event programme and we should be able to back several winners along with a couple of handy trifectas, don’t forget all races are trifectas and first four events and that is where the value should be.

How good is race 8 the 643m event, it’s a FFA and we see several strong chances with She’s A Looper down in box 1 and Bamba Lam Barney engaged. Both are in outstanding from and have won their past 2 so it’s sure to make for a fantastic race there could be a smokey if they both find trouble with Zipping Zeus flying home late.

While exciting superstar On Fire produced another outstanding performance to claim victory in the State Finals of the UBET National Sprint series and book his spot in Queensland. NEW WINNING POST FOR ANGLE PARK PROGRESSION

The New Winning Post will be installed this month at Angle Park during the period of 11th August through until 24th August.

As part of this construction GRSA has also planned for a track turnover to take place. The current inclement weather has caused some minor delays however we are on target to return to racing on Thursday night 24th August. The track turnover has been delayed due to the inclement weather and will now be done on Monday and Tuesday next week. With this being the case the Angle Park Tuesday night trials will be cancelled. GRSA wanted to trial prior to the Thursday night however staff will need a few days to ensure the track has returned to racing levels.

NO TRIALS TUESDAY NIGHT AT ANGLE PARK

As mentioned above there will be NO trails at Angle Park on Tuesday night due to the track turnover.

GAWLER SHOW DATES

August means that it is coming up to Gawler Show time, so some Gawler meetings will be transferred to Strathalbyn and Angle Park this year.

This year the Annual Gawler Show will be held on the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th August. Racing on Sunday night 27th August will be at Strathalbyn. Racing on Tuesday 29th August will be at Angle Park with this meeting being an Angle Park Provincial (APD) fixture with normal Tuesday prizemoney and will be raced with the Finish On Lure.
Racing on Friday 25th August will be at Angle Park.
Trials will be cancelled at Gawler on Wednesday 23rd August and Thursday 24th August due to the Show preparations. We will hopefully have the track ready to trial again on Wednesday 30th August, but this will be dependent on the weather over the show weekend. There will be NO trials at Angle Park on Tuesday 22nd August (due to track turnover) however will return on Saturday 26th August.

EMERLEY PARK TRIALS TO FINISH AT 9.30AM TOMORROW

With the Gawler Day race meeting tomorrow the Emerley Park trials will need to finish at 9.30am tomorrow morning so staff can also attend the Gawler Day race meeting.

It would be appreciated if trainers could have completed their trialling at Emerley Park prior to this time.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below.

These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.

Changes listed below:

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:
1. Combined claim limit of $800 for all veterinary and transport expenses
2. Removal of the advanced application process for the breeders rebate now that both sires and breeding females must be registered
3. Removal of the cap on litters in anticipation of national (tiered) breeder licensing

SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support. (There have already been three increased payments to connections whelped in 2016 who have won their Maiden event).

KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE IN LATER THIS MONTH

GRSA introduced the Kings and Queens Feature series this year with Heats on Thursday 31st August and a $6,000 Final on Thursday 7th September in support of those greyhounds affected by the change to the AGRA Age Restricted Classics from 30 months back down to 27 months for this years Oaks and Derby.

The eligibility for these races is for dogs and bitches whelped between 1st March 2015 and 31st May 2015. Performed Maidens are eligible (raced or qualy trialled).

It will be dependent upon nominations however we would like to run a dogs heat and a bitches heat separately with greyhounds qualifying into the final however there are not sufficient nominations for either sex then these heats will be mixed as a one off heat into a final or a couple of mixed heats. Special conditions apply however these races will be non-penalty.
• Nominations close Monday 28th August at 9.00am with GRSA.

COFFEX COFFEE SA OAKS & BGC INDUSTRIAL CLEANING SUPPLIES SA DERBY

Owners and trainers are reminded that the Oaks & Derby at Angle Park are fast approaching. A reminder to trainers about the eligibility and conditions of both these series which has our races listed as one of the few AGRA Age Restricted Classics for the season.

The whelping date of both the Oaks and Derby is for greyhounds whelped 27 months prior to the heats so to be eligible for both series your greyhound will have to be whelped on or after 1st June 2015. The other requirement is that Maidens are ineligible so your greyhound has to have won a race. The series are two week series with Open Heats and a Final. The Dates are:

Coffex Coffee Oaks (Group 3):
$4,590 Heats x 8 – Thursday 7th September
$35,000 Final – Thursday 14th September
