TELLING THE TAIL
By The Shadow

Tonight’s 12 event programme at Murray Bridge we have racing over the 455m and 530m so it makes for an interesting punting night. All races are Trifecta and First Four events and there looks to be a couple of good things throughout the evening.

Race 1 - We kick start the night with a Maiden and we will stick with Finniss Flash out in box 8, he was a good even run from this draw last week and is close to a win. Spring Flora along with Mallee Dreamer can run into the placings. Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 2 - Mallee Magic had a heap of support on debut and was never out of trouble in the run, he is well drawn here tonight and I would expect a bold showing from the Rasmussen youngster. Criminal has been placed at his last two at Mount Gambier and the kennel is notching up a few winners of late, add Don’t Tell Lies for the Trifecta. Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 3 - Departure Gate has been in career best form winning three of his last five, he goes well at the Bridge and looks very hard to beat again. Aussie Swiper has only had the one run for the Murray kennel and is drawn for a forward showing. Box Up 1.2.3.7

Race 4 - This certainly is a good betting affair with a heap of chances, Rhyme Nor Reason was a last start winner here in good time, he looks the one to catch. Tangelo Fire is well drawn and is more than capable when on the lure. Rogue Planet will be storming home and has been in the money at his last five runs, he is a must for our Trifecta. Box Up 1.2.6.7

Race 5 - Bomb Proof is working towards a win and from the draw and looks a top chance.  Halfeti Rose and Lektra Boogie who has been racing well for the new kennel to fill the minors. Box Up 2.5.6.8

Race 6 - Terrific Keith has certainly taken a liking to the Murray Bridge circuit, he has won his last six here and is very hard to tip against tonight. Spring Vinnie is another who loves this venue, he can run time and is well drawn. Woodside Zulu will be running on strongly but he does like to scout wide in his races Box Up 1.2.7.8

Race 7 - This certainly is a wide-open affair and we will stick with Crawl who was a very nice 2nd here last start and was doing his best work late, he is our top pick in this. Jax Kade is a newcomer who had handy form in NSW and must be kept safe on debut. Saint Candy can run a cheeky race. Box Up 3.5.6.7

Race 8 - Meet Joe Black has won his last three here and Gawler, he should get a clear run from the draw and prove very hard to beat. Gary’s Miracle can never be overlooked, she has been racing well and is a chance again in this, add Threaten who normally goes well from this draw. Box Up 1.3.4.6

Race 9 - The Troy Murray kennel rarely leave the track without a winner and Came And Went has been racing well winning his past two at Gawler, he has moderate beginners around him and should jump straight to the front. Ferocious Steve won his Maiden here last week and can figure again Box Up 1.2.5.7

Race 10 - Springvale Slick has won two of his last four here, he has been jumping well in his recent runs and is drawn to make it back-to-back wins. Spring Agatha is a handy youngster she has only had the three starts for two wins and can run time. My Villanelle has been in the money at her last five and goes well from wide draws. Box Up 2.5.7.8

Race 11 - The John Gale trained Stars Aligned is resuming here tonight, she has had a month off between runs and has a perfect strike rate since crossing the border. Saint Sandy is well boxed, he has been placed here at his past two and from the draw is right in the mix. Another Peach along with Ackles for the First Four.

Race 12 - Sevilla can send us home on a winning note but will be short, she has won four of her last five and is very slick out of the lids and should win again. Boundin Baby looks a place chance again along with Allinga Chloe. 5 from 1.4.8 boxed.

LOCAL NEWS

VALE - TONY & GLORIA MILLIGAN

GRSA was saddened to hear the news that industry persons Tony Milligan and his wife Gloria passed away within the space of a day earlier this week.

Both Tony and Gloria were extremely well liked in the industry and we all feel for their family during this time.

SIR TRUCULENT AT IPSWICH SATURDAY AFTER GROUP 1 GLORY

With the excitement of SA Owned and Bred star stayer Sir Truculent winning the Group 1 Queensland Cup last Thursday night we get another opportunity to see him race in the Sunshine state before heading home.

Wally Harkins has kept Sir Truculent with Tony Brett for a shot at the Ipswich Grand Prix Saturday night where he has drawn box 2 over the 732m in another very winnable race. Also lining up is Bedrock Fred who was far from disgraced last week in the Group 1 Cup running 7th after a slashing 3rd in the heats. He has drawn box 7 with the feature race 8 on the program.

We wish them both the very best of luck again this week.

If the winner of the Gawler Produce is SA Bred, there is also a $1,000 SA Bred Bonus.

Sunday night will also recognise 50 years of racing at the Northern venue with many old and new faces attending in what should be a great night.  There will be a 50th Anniversary race worth $10,000 on the program which is race 6 due to start at 6.46pm and feature a high quality field including Zipping Sultan, Mister Harlewood and Shane McQueen Feature winner Rushes.

The next meeting will be on Saturday, 24th July at Gawler which is a Timed Graded Meeting - “Worst to Best” rating. (Ratings 11-6 given preference for the meeting including the heats). Greyhounds will be graded into 3 categories; Maidens, 1-4 wins and 5 or more wins. Specific grades of greyhounds are not considered except for Maidens. Races are non-penalty with Pathway prizemoney. Reserves will be determined by the Grader and there will be no guarding. Please refer to “Time Based Grading” published conditions.

• Nominations close Tuesday, 20th July at 9.00am.

MURRAY BRIDGE TO RACE ON SATURDAY 7TH AUGUST

Whilst we are in the final weeks of the Angle Park redevelopment being completed Saturday Morning, 7th August will have to be conducted at Murray Bridge Straight track as the Gawler Oval has football commitments on this day.

Saturday mornings are crucial to our sustained race program so it is important to have these meetings supported. Whilst it is an early start GRSA will program this meeting with increased prizemoney to support those trainers.

The meeting will be normal grading for Prov 2, however, will have Prov 1 prizemoney. There will be -

·         $1,525 Heats Mixed 345– 300m ($1,855 Final Wednesday 18/8/21)

·         $1,255 Heats Daish Irrigation & Fodder Maiden – 300m ($1,430 Final Wednesday 18/8/21. $100 voucher provided by Daish to winning connections for final)

• Nominations close Wednesday, 4th August at 9.00am.

The following Saturday morning meeting will be the opening of the Angle Park track on Saturday, 21st August.

CHAMPION PUPPY MOVED TO AUGUST AND CONDUCTED AT GAWLER

The Champion Puppy series for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st July, 2019 will be conducted in August.

This series is normally conducted in July, however, with changes to feature events it has been moved to August with the Heats on Sunday, 1st August and the Final on Sunday, 8th August. GRSA has committed to running this series in this timeslot and with Angle Park not being ready at this time the series will be run at Gawler and will coincide with the City A meetings.

The Heats will be worth $5,150 with the Final now worth $14,275.

• Nominations for the Heats close with GRSA at 9am on Wednesday, 28th July

PROV 1 PRIZEMONEY FOR MOUNT GAMBIER

As from the 1st July, 2021 Provincial 1 prizemoney will be paid for the Mount Gambier Sunday meetings and will be the same breakdown as Gawler and Murray Bridge.

These meetings will be considered a Provincial 1 meeting for Grading and the grades that the greyhounds currently have for Provincial 2 will carry over to Provincial 1 at the greyhounds first start at Provincial 1. This was the same process when Gawler split into Provincial 1 and Provincial 2 meetings a number of years ago.  Thursday meetings will remain Time Grading under the current format as it has proven to be quite successful over the years, however, the impact of these changes will be monitored by GRSA.

The club will also look to program (0-2 win) 600m races on Time Graded Thursday meetings and gage the response from trainers.

NOMINATION DAYS TO CHANGE FOR MT GAMBIER SUNDAY AND THE METRO SATURDAY MORNING MEETINGS FROM AUGUST

After consultation with the Mt Gambier GRC, Member Clubs and Industry Consultative Group, GRSA has approved the change for the Mt Gambier Sunday meetings to now be graded on the Tuesday with nominations closing at 9am on that morning.

This will assist the Club to provide the Sunday fields into the local paper which is important for persons in the South East to have this available.

As a result the Saturday morning metro meeting will now move to Wednesday, with nominations closing at 9am on that morning. This will give an even spread of no more than two meetings to be graded on any given day (except public holiday requirements).  This will be effective from the 1st August.

GRADING OF ANGLE PARK NEW DISTANCES

With Angle Park having new distances for racing it is likely they will be considered as if they are on a new track which will mean that for the 342m, 530m, 595m and 730m all dogs will start as new.

Effectively meaning they will be Maidens, Grade 6’s or Grade 5’s. GRSA is working with OzChase how to best manage this with this decision part of the Agenda for the upcoming Grading Review Panel meeting on Monday, 26th July.

GRADING REVIEW PANEL MEETING ON MONDAY 26TH JULY

The next GRP meeting will be held on Monday, 26th July at the offices of GRSA with an Agenda to be sent out to the panel in the coming week.

With the meeting being held shortly if any members of the industry would like to put forward an Agenda item please send to [email protected]  by Thursday, 22nd July.
