In the Dinky Di Web Designs Stake over 400m at Gawler greyhounds on Tuesday, when the lids went up, Pat The Weapon out of box 2 flew to the lead from Kipsang (4). After going 50 metres, Katz Shadow (8) quickly caught the leader and sensibly went along the rails to pass Pat The Weapon, before going out to a 3 length lead.

Approaching the home turn, Cool Collusion (1) was also able to rail and got through to get into second position, and with Kipsang switching to the outside, they both tried to run down Katz Shadow. However the leader was going too well, and running a handy 22.96 secs, was able to win strongly by 4 lengths.

Finishing second was Cool Collusion for Des Hockley of Lewiston, while Kipsang ran third for Tony Fry also of Lewiston.

Katz Shadow is trained at Mypolonga by Allen Miegel and raced in partnership with his wife Karen. To make the win more satisfying was the fact that the black dog was bred from their own racing stock, Uno’s Shadow and Puzzle Me Red. Uno’s Shadow had run some fast races at Angle Park and they decided it was worth a try. With his record, their decision has been vindicated, with Katz Shadow now having won 6 races with 12 placings from 40 starts.

Their interest in greyhounds started in 2002 after Allen, who used to watch the racing at the hotel, was offered a giveaway to train. While this didn’t produce any success, it was the start and it snowballed from there. Karen said she loves the greyhounds as animals and is also involved in the industry by being a committee member of the Strathalbyn Club.

Des Hockley was the first trainer to start the doubles rolling with Dark Demon, who has been running consistently without winning, breaking through and reserve runner Prince Mata also scoring.

Two Wells regular Troy Murray was also in the doubles with Emerley Lover and Jimmy Lane successful. Adding to this was father Ray, who had Aston Kane scoring in good fashion.

And it wouldn’t be a Gawler meeting without Tony Lagana leading in a winner, who did it in good style again with last week’s featured greyhound Avid Tyson, picking up another cheque and Fire Tyson also saluting.

With the great weather at the moment, it is a good time to enjoy greyhound racing at Gawler, with a meeting every Tuesday afternoon and the next Friday afternoon meeting being on the 4th April.
