Sunday Night at Gawler
Greyhound racing returned to Gawler on Sunday night for a one-off special, and attracted a great crowd to watch an exciting night of racing.
A highlight of the night was the first appearance at the track of the well credentialed greyhound Rajasthan competing In race 5, a Grade 5 event over 531m. Rajasthan jumped well from box 2, but was quickly headed by both Sutton Daisy (8) and Spring Burner (5). Settling in well behind them on the rails, Rajasthan, a noted distance performer, used his racing strength to gradually get on level terms at the 643m boxes, and then power away to win by just over four lengths. Second was Sutton Daisy for Angela Modra of Gawler River, with Spring Burner third for Greg Board of Murray Bridge.
2020 has been an unusual year in many ways, and it was as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions that saw Rajasthan compete at Gawler, with a new trainer. Part owned by Tim Aloisi, along with friends Damian Bates, Matt Lehmann and Mick McSorley, Tim has recently taken over training duties as well. With an eye on running some of their dogs in the upcoming cups available in SA, Tim transferred four of their dogs back to SA, and took up the training, as it is unlikely that interstate trainers could have brought them over as usual, due to border travel restrictions.
Rajasthan was purchased by Tim after having won a few races in Victoria. He has proven to be a great performer, having now won 39 races, predominantly in Victoria and has competed in four states. He is heading towards earnings of $400,000, and retirement with the group’s aim of just one more win, to reach their target of 40. Tim described Rajasthan as being very keen at the track, and a very honest chaser.
With some twenty racing dogs around Australia, Tim and his partners have a big commitment in the industry, and thoroughly enjoy their involvement and the mateships they have formed. Tim has held a trainer’s license for five years, and says he doesn’t have time to train, but he is doing well with Rajasthan with four wins from seven starts while he is in SA.
