Sunday night’s 10-race Gawler program may have seen one of the new stars of South Australian greyhound racing emerge with Zinfandel Trace winning the 2024 Gawler Produce final.
The lightly raced youngster burst onto the scene in April winning a maiden series at Angle Park in quick times of 30.64 and 30.57 and returned to the track for the Gawler Produce series in earlier this month.

After finishing second In her heat, she produced another eye-catching run for second in the semi-final where she had no luck in the run but finished strongly behind the Victorian visitor Fast Headache.
She entered the final as one of the favourites alongside semi-final winners Fast Headache and Zinfandel Evie and was nicely drawn in box three.  Zinfandel Trace was away well and landed nicely in third place around the first turn and made ground down the back but checked off heels and slowed her momentum.

However, around the bend she quickly found another gear and powered over the top to win in 30.84 and claim the biggest win of her young career for trainer Gavin Harris.
Harris also had the third-place finisher in Zinfandel Evie while Fast Headache for Matthew Lanigan finished second.

Speaking on the dais post-race, Harris said he was pleased with the run that Zinfandel Trace was able to produce.
“Yeah, it was a very good run, she isn’t two years of age until October, so she is quite young and has a lot of improvement in her,” Harris said.
“She’s a half sister of (Zinfandel) Evie and she is younger, but they are both great dogs and they have made us very happy.”

The Gawler Produce Consolation was taken out by the Ben Rawlings trained Mango Cans who produced a nice run from box one.

Among the other features on the program was the Mike Wittholz Mixed Masters series final over the 400m trip which was taken out by the Yvonne Maxwell trained Nangar Teddy.
From box four, Nangar Teddy was crossed by Dramatic Diva but was able to settle second on the rail and made the most of clear passage through spearing away and winning by nearly four lengths in 22.61

The Gawler Anniversary Cup was the other feature over the 531m journey for open company dogs and was taken out by the Michael Giniotis trained Boom Boom Jinx.
Coming in off some excellent Angle Park form including a 30.28 win last Monday and converted that in Anniversary Cup success after storming home over the top of the field to win in 30.77.
