Wednesday

12 strong races on Wednesday at Gawler with the Gawler Classic heats the feature of the card.

The Ben Rawlings trained Agent Four took out the first of the two Classic heats, with a blitzing performance from box eight. The black bitch had been in fantastic form prior to lining up on Wednesday, and looked like she would enjoy the drop to age restricted opposition, and that she did. She left the boxes well before proving way too slick midrace, spacing her rivals and winning comfortably in a sharp 22.75. Nicole Price took out the second heat with Impulsive putting up an impressive effort to win in 22.74. He jumped quickly from the boxes but was squeezed up early and lost a few spots. That didn’t worry him however, as he regained his balance and barged his way to the lead. A great win and the final looks set to be a cracker!

Cheryl Herman had a winning double for the day, continuing her terrific form. Colden Dayto was the first as he proved dominant, leading all the way in a slick 22.72, before Steve’s Regret won later, but not so easily. He had to work quite hard to find the front, and once he did he was always challenged, but to his credit he just kept kicking and ended up leading all the way in 22.79. A great day for Cheryl who is doing a terrific job with her small team!

Another trainer who has got the kennel humming is Vadim Roz, and he added to his recent success with two winners on Wednesday. The first one was an electric BOD winner in the form of Emerley Jaguar, who has been flying since joining Vadim’s kennel. He had to overcome box six in the third and final heat of the Gawler Classic, but with a slick beginning, he did it effortlessly. After finding the arm, he was never going to be caught running a quick 22.69. Yarramundi Turbo was the other winner for Vadim, with a strong railing display from box one, which saw the chaser win by a length in 23.11.

Sunday

The North v South series heats rolled onto Gawler with some terrific races brought together. Spring Agatha took out South’s heat over the 530m with a flying 30.49 all the way victory! She drew quite suitably in box eight, but had to turn last week's result around with Finiss Flash having her measure. She jumped a lot better and was just far too quick, mustering to the front and saying farewell. It was a fantastic run and just goes to show how fast she is. North’s heat was next and it was an even four dog field. Toby West was able to maintain his brilliant form and navigate the early leader, before roaring to the front midrace and putting a big gap on the others. He won by five lengths in a comprehensive 30.69, and will no doubt represent North well in the final next week!

The sprint heats were up next, with the North version up first. It was only a small field but was loaded with quality. Box draw proved to be the difference, with a faultless Classy Chaos using box one to perfection. She jumped terrifically and found a clear lead, whilst the second favourite in Shall Not did the opposite and was facing traffic. Shall Not made a good go of running down Classy Chaos, but when she is running 22.55 on the arm, you’re never going to catch her! The Rasmussen dominated field lined up for the South heat, with a pretty even bunch doing battle. Victa Kurt and Mo Slater were the early leaders, with the two putting it to each other up the back, as they got turned for home, Victa Kurt worked his way to the front and put the race away, winning by a length and holding off a wall of chasers behind. His time was only 22.81, so the South finalists will have their work cut out next week.

Troy Murray has found himself a big South Australian Oak’s chance in the form of Gondola, with the black bitch running a scintillating 30.62 to take out her grade 6. She’s come over from NSW with some quick Wentworth Park runs, but her two SA runs have been very good, albeit luckless, so it wasn’t a real surprise to see her do that on Sunday. She’s got plenty of early speed which is crucial when it comes to big races, and I have no doubt she will be very competitive when the heats roll around in three weeks time! Troy also had a double with Stengle getting himself on the winners list. He jumped well over the 400m trip, but had to ride a bump early, which he did, before running away and clocking 22.94.
