Paskeville trainer David Hall has had recent success with some littermates, all with the name “Rose”, success that continued at Gawler greyhounds on Sunday night.

David had Ranger Rose engaged in a Grade 5 event over 400m, which saw Invincibility bounce out of box 1 to take an early lead, with Spy Master (5) moving up on the outside. Approaching the back turn, Ranger Rose (3), which had been sitting behind the leader, pushed out from the rails to take a gap between the two leaders, to be in the lead into the home straight. Ranger Rose had to survive a late challenge from the fast finishing Ruphert Keeping (7), and won by the very narrow margin of just a head. Ruphert Keeping finished second for Brock Wilson of Mildura South, with Invincibility in third spot for Adam Manton of Lewiston.

Ranger Rose is also owned by David Hall, and he and his wife Gina, explained how Ranger Rose came into their ownership. They had answered an internet advertisement placed about a year ago by Sharon Chignell in Victoria, who was looking to move some of her dogs along, due to the COVID-19 situation there. The first dog for sale was Christopher Rose, who had been racing without much success . That was to change, as Christopher Rose broke through for a win at his first start for David. Buoyed by some early success, David and Gina decided to acquire another dog from Sharon. This one was named Willow Rose, and she was similarly without a win to her name. Willow Rose recorded a win at her sixth start in Gina’s care.

Traveling from Paskeville to race at Angle Park or Gawler, can make it a very long day, so David and Gina were contemplating retiring from the industry. However a phone call came from Sharon, offering them another member of the litter, Ranger Rose. It was enough for them to reconsider their position and they decided to continue. They are pleased they have, as Ranger Rose has now recorded five wins and numerous placings for them in SA. Sharon is also happy as it is not only giving her dogs an opportunity to win, but has made other trainers here aware of her dogs. The whole litter has a good record, with nine out of the ten now having won.

David and Gina have a small team of five in their kennel, and have a long involvement in the sport, having raced greyhounds in the UK, and then in Tasmania before moving to SA. Gina enjoys both the people and the greyhounds, which is a good reason to keep going.

As for Ranger, his name comes from the unusual brindle patch over his eye, causing Sharon to liken him to the “Lone Ranger”. Just about to turn three years of age, Ranger ran his personal best time of 23.00 secs on Sunday, and with his good form, he should provide plenty of interest for David and Gina.

Racing continues in the new timeslots of Wednesday afternoon and Sunday nights, and the public is welcome back on track. Please book for Sunday nights with the Club on 8522-2935.
