Not So Crazy
Three heats of the classic series, The Gawler Produce were conducted at Gawler greyhounds on Tuesday.
This premier event usually attracts more entrants, but a recent outbreak of kennel cough took it’s temporary toll on the availability of young greyhounds.
Last week’s featured trainer, Ossie Chegia looks as though he will play a big part in the Final of the series, which will be run on Sunday 7th July. His runner in Heat 1, High Status, repeated last week’s win, running the time of 30.94 secs to defeat Fire Tyson by 1 ½ lengths and Nicholas Jack.
Ossie was successful again in Heat 2, when last week’s winner of the Gawler Breeder’s Classic, Flying Tee repeated the dose, leading all the way to win by 7 ¼ lengths in the time of 30.42 secs. Second was Carlos Tyson and third Oogaboo Oz.
The third heat, went to Just Crazy, which took the lead in the latter stages to win by nearly 3 lengths over Avid Tyson, which led for most of the race and Token McLaren.
Just Crazy is trained at Two Wells by Des Hockley, for his partner Renata Maruszczyk. Des is a very experienced trainer, having been the leading trainer at Broken Hill for a number of years, prior to moving to Adelaide some 14 years ago. While Des and Renata do all the work at home, two mates Johnno Johnstone and Mick Delorenzo are a big help at the track
Des related that he had a gap between his own litters and was looking for something to add. Renata likes pups and as Des likes to support local breeding wherever possible, he was attracted to two litters that Mike and Karen Wittholz had for sale. He ended up purchasing four pups, one of which turned out to be Just Crazy, named because she has a “full on” boisterous nature. Des recalled that Crazy had broken in well, and thought she might now make it to 600m racing. Wherever her future lies, she has done well to this point, having won 6 races and 10 placings from 22 starts
Gawler River trainer Tony Lagana, who has enjoyed consistent success in recent times, had to be content with providing the runner up in each heat, but they are likely to feature well in the Final.
In addition to the normal Tuesday afternoon meetings, racing will be held on Sunday 7th July (twilight), which will see the running of the Produce Final, and also Friday 12th July (afternoon).
