We saw eleven races at Gawler on Sunday Night and the night was headlined by three heats of the Gawler Breeders series over 400 meters. Race one was heat one and was taken out by Air Pumbaa for trainer Ray Murray. He led for most of the way from box six and ran an exceptional time of 22.97 which was a new personal best for him. He had only had the one career win from five starts before Sunday’s run. He was a massive improver on Sunday night and is starting to show his true ability. He looks like a major threat in the final next week.

Heat two looked very even on paper. Callington trainer Wendy Sebastyan made the trip to Gawler with a few runners but her main chance looked to be Mo Slater in heat two. Before Sunday Mo Slater had won two of her last four starts and had registered wins at Angle Park and Murray Bridge but was yet to score a win at Gawler. She picked the right race to start her winning ways at Gawler. She stormed home and ran over the top of the early leaders to win by three quarters of a length. She ran a time 23.36 which wasn’t as quick as her personal best time of 22.99. That didn’t really matter though since she did the thing that matters the most and that’s crossing the line first.

The third and final heat was won easily by Little Purpose for trainer Lisa Rasmussen. She was the odds-on favourite and won exactly like an odds on favourite should. She led all of the way from box seven and ran a time of 23.03. She will be a major chance in the final next Sunday. Other highlights on the eleven-race program included Tahoe scoring her first SA win in race five for Lewiston trainer Ashlee Griffiths. She led all of the way and ended up paying a massive $34.40 for the win.  The run of the night though had to go to Came And Went trained by Troy Murray who made it three wins in a row after scoring recent wins over the short course at Murray Bridge and Gawler. Those recent short course runs have really sharpened him up because he ran a blistering time of 22.42 over the 400 meters. That time was one of the fastest runs we have seen at Gawler over the last few years and the time was pretty close to Avid Tyson’s record of 22.27 set back in 2014.

Greyhound racing returns to Gawler on Wednesday afternoon and Sunday night this week. Sunday night’s race meeting will feature the final of the 2022 Gawler Breeders over 400 meters.
