How quickly fortunes can change in a week. Last week after the heats of the Distance the Troy Murray kennel must have been wondering what went wrong when their champion stayer Kalden Mayhem missed an automatic start in the State final and was listed as the first reserve. However with the unfortunate scratching for connections of Max A Zillion yesterday morning, Kalden Mayhem gained a start and then showed his class to win and qualify for the National final at the Meadows on Saturday 24th August.

The 2011 SA Greyhound of the Year began slowly from box 4 and found himself back at the rear of the field as Cousin Callum found the front and raced away in the front straight on the first occasion with Allen Bardolf giving chase. Kalden Mayhem began to work his way through the field and began to close quickly on the leaders down the back straight. Alllen Bardolf ran to the front rounding the home turn as Cousin Callum tired out of the event and for a moment looked the winner for Shaun Matcott however the big blue dog ranged up and swept past him in the home straight to go on and record a stirring victory. Kalden Mayhem recorded a very handy 43.58 for the 731m in winning by 1¾ lengths from Allen Bardolf with Uno Lesson for Shaun Laffin flashing home for third a further 3½  lengths away.

Kalden Mayhem who is now a rising 5yo made it 57 wins from his 119 career starts, including 29 placings and career earnings close to $200,000. He represented South Australia over the Distance at the Nationals two years ago in Brisbane when he ran an outstanding third behind superstar Dashing Corsair and then was just touched out last year by Abdon Bale in the State final who produced the Run of the Year in SA to qualify. It is an outstanding training performance by Troy Murray to qualify Kalden Mayhem again for the Nationals and “Mayhem” will no doubt to SA proud as he has done before on the National stage.
