GRSA wishes to advise that a national Rule (GAR24) is proposed to be introduced later this year which mandates the sterilisation of greyhounds being rehomed outside the framework of GAP or another adoption agency that sterilises as part of the adoption process. Following recent discussion with the Industry Consultative Group (ICG) the Board has decided to implement the proposed GAR24, relating to the mandatory sterilisation of greyhounds as a requirement for rehoming, as an immediate Local Rule until such time as GAR24 has been ratified, or retain the Local Rule if that doesn’t eventuate. The new local rule will form a part of LR114(SA).
Please note that from 1st August 2021, GRSA mandates the sterilisation of all registered SA greyhounds being retired as pets. GRSA will provide a rebate for trainers who re-home their greyhounds such that they will be required to arrange sterilisation, up to a maximum rebate of $375 (against actual expense).
A copy of the new Local Rule appears below.

  • (1B) Unless a greyhound is being accepted by a recognised adoption agency that undertakes sterilisation –
  • (a) the last registered owner or person responsible for the greyhound at the time of such retirement as a pet must ensure that the greyhound has been surgically sterilised by a veterinarian before allowing the greyhound to leave their care and custody.
  • (b) In submitting the required notification prescribed by GAR 106, a certificate of sterilisation by a veterinarian must be supplied for any retired greyhound to which this rule applies.
  • (c) This sub-rule commences on 1 August 2021.
