This Sunday’s running of the Gawler Cup will see Cameron Butcher bring Jack’s Well to the track in an attempt to claim his first ever Gawler Cup, a race that the leading trainer and breeder has surprisingly never won. It was slightly fortunate circumstances which saw the star chaser qualify as he only ran second with a handy 31.02, just enough to see him make the final field. Most punter’s thought he was a good thing to win his race, but Cam thinks their may have been a reason for his defeat.

“The heat run wasn’t very good, he wasn’t himself I don’t recon. We recon he might have had a bit of tonsillitis or something. We hope we’ve fixed it up for this week, we will find out on sunday!” - Cameron Butcher

The box draw which was done on track Monday night, hasn’t proven overly kind with Jack’s Well drawing a horror box 5, with a typically pessimistic Butcher giving his blunt thoughts on the draw.

“Terrible!”

Fire Strike and Rosie Red which are from the same litter as Jack’s Well both qualified, but Cameron think’s that Jack’s Well has the best chance of the trio.

“Well I think Jack’s Well is probably (the best chance), the little girl (Rosie Red) she’s hardly raced but she nearly beat him in the SA St Ledger. She led by about 5 lengths and then he pegged her back in the end. She is pretty quick though. Whoever has got the luck on the night I reckon!”

Jack’s Well has had an easier week going into the final, which hopefully will see him show some more toe early.

“He’s just had an easier week running around the paddock, we haven’t slipped him or anything.”

Out of the many good dogs that have come through the Butcher kennel, Cameron rates Jack pretty highly amongst them.

“He’s up there, on par I recon. Worm Burner was better really and On Fire ran second in the nationals and probably should have won. I’d rate Jack (Jack’s Well) third I reckon. He’s strong and fairly sensible in a field. His worst trait is he doesn’t jump quick enough!”

The Gawler Cup final is race 8 this Sunday night and which will jump at 8:22pm.
