Wednesday

Tony Hinrichsen had a massive day at Gawler, with three winners to his name. Bree Fury broke her maiden after some terrific efforts previously. She’s not great out of boxes and showed that again when she was last away, but used her brilliant mid race pace to get to the lead as they hit the turn. She ran away for a good 23.49 effort. It was two in a row when Bag The Cash broke his maiden in the next race. This was a bit different as he found himself in front, before being caught and fighting back to get up narrowly. He’s got a bit to learn with racing but he can run this boy. The consistent Correlate rounded it out for Tony with the black bitch using her early speed to cross early from box six, before proving too hard to catch and winning in a tidy 22.99. A great effort all round!

Yvonne King, who also trains in partnership with Tony, had two of her own winners, which made it five for the pair. Allinga Grin showed her real ability with a brilliant all the way victory from box five over the short trip. She flew out of the boxes as she normally does in a red hot 8.66 first split, before winning as easy as you like in a hot 22.76. That was her 10th career win as she approaches her 100th start. Two races later it was the old girl in Allinga Lily who added another win to her career tally. This win wasn’t quite as smooth however as she was led early and trying to get to the fence with a chaser underneath her. Up the back straight she got clear air and really clicked through the gears. As they hit the turn, she took over and found the front, before gripping on late for a 22.96 victory. Pretty good for a bitch that’s nearly 5 years old!

Somersby showed his true ability with a best of the day effort over the short trip. He had another shocking box having drawn the green rug, but that did not deter him. When the boxes opened, he flew out in a hot 8.64 first split, which had the race over pretty early. Once in front, he roared away and won by a space, stopping the clock at 22.73 which is a great run. His trainer Nicole Price also had another winner with the promising Pink Confetti leading all the way over the 531m trip in 31.27.

Friday

The Gawler Classic heats were the feature of the Friday card, with two heats being staged. Springvale Bray started favourite in the first heat off the back of two excellent victories previously. It was a pretty competitive go to the first corner with Finiss Redeem just getting to the lead ahead of Springvae Bray who used the red box nicely. It was a fantastic battle the entire race, with the two chasers declaring it on. In the last bounds, Springvale Bray was able to get the head in front and win in 30.85 ahead of an impressive Finniss Redeem.

The second heat proved to be an absolute demolition job from the series favourite in Bobby Axelrod. From box one, it looked like a tap in for the rising star, but he still had to go out there and do it. The boxes opened and quite the spectacle followed, with Bobby Axelrod flying out with a 3.14 first split, before reeling off a 15.76 back split with the race effectively over. Bobby showed he is not weak either, with the margin extending, he stopped the clock in an airborne 30.49. He will certainly be the favourite for the final this week and rightfully so.

John Sargent picked up a winner with the lightly raced Gossamer getting the job done from box one. It was a strong grade 6 field, but early speed proved to be the difference in the race. The brindle bitch used her early pace to rail through early and hold the lead, before setting up a three length margin up the back straight. In the home straight, the chasers were closing but Gossamer did enough and held on for a nice 22.93 win. She is slowly improving every start which is a fantastic sign.
