SOUTHERN GREYHOUND RACEWAY CLOSURE

The impending completion of the new Murray Bridge project will bring with it the cessation of racing at the Southern Greyhound Raceway (Strathalbyn).

Greyhound racing at Strathalbyn has been a constant fixture on the Greyhound Racing South Australia (GRSA) calendar since the early 1970’s.  Throughout its history, the Club has always been operated by a dedicated and hard working group of volunteers and the current Committee is no exception.

Whilst it will be sad to see the last greyhound race around the Strathalbyn track, it will be a bittersweet moment as it will mean that racing at the new Murray Bridge facility is just around the corner.

As part of the transition from Strathalbyn to Murray Bridge, there will need to be a period of time where no racing will occur in the region – currently intended to be around eight weeks.  This shutdown period is to allow essential equipment and infrastructure to be transported to Murray Bridge in readiness for trialling and then racing.

As such, the Strathalbyn Club will conduct their last ever race meeting on the final of the 2018 Strathalbyn Cup.

The SGR committee were extremely keen to be able to stage a final Cup prior to the cessation of racing, something which GRSA supports as an appropriate objective despite the busy feature race schedule during this period.

The Cup will slot into a small window of opportunity after the Adelaide Cup and before the Gawler Cup.  Heats will be run on Tuesday 16th October, with the final five days later on Sunday 21st October.

Some meeting changes were required to facilitate the running of the last ever Strathalbyn Cup therefore participants should be encouraged to check the most recent calendars on the website and in Kennel Capers.

As the industry progresses towards this exciting era of racing at Murray Bridge, GRSA wishes to recognise and thank the efforts of participants, volunteers and committee members (past and present) who have contributed so selflessly and enthusiastically to the social fabric of racing at Strathalbyn and the surrounding region.
