Greyhound racing returned to Gawler on Friday afternoon.
Greyhound racing returned to Gawler on Friday afternoon. Racing kicked off in the mid afternoon around 3:00PM and wrapped around 6:00PM which will be a regular occurrence during the winter months when Gawler race on Friday afternoons. Make sure you keen an eye on the Greyhound Racing SA website to find all of the racing dates and times for Gawler. We saw a strong ten race program at Gawler on Friday which was highlighted by the strong performances of numerous trainers. It also featured two heats of the Gawler Future Stars series.
Mclaren Vale trainer Gavin Harris had two strong chances in races four and five which were the two heats of the Gawler Future Stars which were both contested over 531 meters. The first of those strong chances Springvale Rex scored a victory in race four. The son of Barcia Bale and Springvale Bryne utilised the box three draw to his advantage and held the lead. He was too strong from that point onwards and went on to win by three and a half lengths. He also ran a personal best time of 30.53.
Gavin looked like a strong chance of winning both heats when the little brother to Springvale Rex lined up in heat two. That litter brother I speak of is Springvale Max who was the odds on favourite from box one in heat two. He didn’t jump away the best but he utilised his strength in the concluding stages of the race to run over the top and run away from the rest of the field with five length win. He ran a time of 30.65 and looks like a dangerous threat in the final along with Gavin’s other hope Springvale Max.
The final will be run this Sunday Night. The race is worth $3,500 and is one of the highlight races for local breeders. The race night will also feature the running of the $5,000 Gawler Easter Sprint. It should be a massive night at the Gawler Greyhound Club on Easter Sunday so make sure you book a table at the Nixon’s Function centre so you can be trackside for all of the action on Easter Sunday.
