Greg Board has a successful night out at Gawler
Helping out a good friend provided a rewarding experience for the Board family at Gawler greyhounds on Sunday night. Well known greyhound breeder, trainer and owner, Greg Board, wanted to help out a good friend interstate, so he bought a greyhound from him.
That greyhound contested race 7 on the program at Gawler, a 531m Grade 6 event Heat, which saw Darwin O’Connor jump away the best from box 4, to lead at the first bend. Dusty Country (1) burrowed through along the rails, to take the front running, and kicked away down the back straight, to lead the field by three lengths. Victa Jess (8) made up ground to be on Dusty Country’s tail, and as they entered the home straight, despite Victa Jess switching her line of running from the inside to the outside, she couldn’t hit the front. Dusty Country prevailed on the line to win by a length over Victa Jess for Clint Trengove of Lewiston, with Came And Went third for Troy Murray of Lewiston.
Greg breeds and trains all his own dogs, which are well known by the “Spring” prefix, and are raced by the Board Racing Team. However because this wasn’t one of the ”Spring” dogs, it was decided it would race in his wife Helen’s name. Surprisingly after having such a long involvement in the sport, this is the first greyhound to race in Helen’s name. And for a complete change, Greg thought it would be a nice touch if it would be trained by someone else. Greg thought the dog would be a good fit with trainer Nicole Price, and Nicole was only too happy to take on the role. Dusty Country has now had just five career starts, but with a tally of two wins and a second, the partnership is working well.

Greg also had success on the night in his own name, with Spring Ammo taking out race 2, a 400m Grade 6 event. Spring Ammo was a bit slow away but quickly mustered speed, and went around the field to win in a very creditable time of 22.84 secs, with a margin of 2 ½ lengths. Greg’s next win came in another Heat of the Grade 6 series over 531m, His runner, Spring Harbour, was away with the leaders in the field, but was initially caught wide from box 8, before settling down to be midfield. Showing some pace, Spring Harbour railed resolutely to take a passage along the rails, and go to the lead on entering the home straight, to win by a handy 2½ lengths.
In another busy racing schedule at Gawler this week, racing is on Friday afternoon, an extra meeting early is on Saturday morning, followed by Sunday night and then Tuesday afternoon. The public is welcome back at the track, with catering available at each meeting. If you are looking to have a meal on our popular Sunday night, please book with the Club on 8522 2935.
