Gawler Racing Review
At Gawler greyhounds on Wednesday afternoon, two parents and their daughters each tasted training success as individuals, on the same program. This would not occur very often, as most families training greyhounds, train in a team environment, and on this occasion they provided five winners on the eleven event card.
Nicole Price set the ball rolling from race 1, when she was successful with Petite Princess in a 400m Maiden event. Jumping from box 6, Petite Princess quickly settled in behind the leader, Molly Holly, and went to the front around the back turn. Petite Princess careered away, going on to record her first win by five lengths.
The second victory for Nicole came in Race 8, a 531m Grade 6 event, when Burning Nitro was able to lead all the way, and win by a very convincing margin of nearly nine lengths. Burning Nitro’s winning time was 30.71 secs, a personal best and a very handy time for that distance.
In race 9, a 400m Grade 5, it was Nicole’s father, Don Gordon’s time to win, which he was able to do when Missy Meghan scored with a very narrow win by just a neck. Missy Meghan led all the way, but had to withstand a sustained and serious challenge from Sutton Frankie. Don is from Glossop in the Riverland, with Nicole previously living in the same region at Renmark, before moving to Lewiston recently.
The other family recording success at the meeting was the Johnstone family, with Kathy and her daughter Kim each training a winner. Kim was off the mark first with a win in a Grade 6 400m event to Banjo Riley. The fawn dog ran on well from third position, to finish too strongly for the leader, Maria’s Gem, winning by two lengths.
Kathy’s winner came in the final event, a 400m Grade 5, to round out the family wins. After a fast start from box 4, Dynamic Lee took control of the race and was never in danger of getting beaten, running a fast 22.84 secs to win by 5½ lengths. Kim is based at Two Wells, while Kathy resides at Hove.
Unfortunately the last Sunday night meeting had to be cancelled due to the very hot weather in Gawler, but racing continues every Wednesday afternoon and Sunday night. This week is therefore a chance to catch up on that lost meeting, so why not come along for a great night. With the popularity of the Sunday night meals, please book with the Club on 8522-2935.
