Gawler Queens Cup - Wonder Whirl
The feature event on the program at Gawler greyhounds on Tuesday, was the Gawler Queens Cup over 531m. This is a race for greyhounds of the faire sex only, and gives them a separate chance to win.
When the lids went up, box 5 runner, Wonder Whirl had managed to just nose out Long Gully Court (2) and Cacia Bale (7) for the lead. Entering the back straight, Wonder Whirl was finally able to get clear on the rails and get away from Long Gully Court.
The pair broke away from the rest of the field and had the race between them. Long Gully Court was unable to bridge the constant 2 length gap, despite challenging in the straight. Wonder Whirl was able to win by 2 ½ lengths in the good time of 30.95 secs. Long Gully put in a solid performance to run second for Paula Hearnden of Angaston, with Cacia Bale finishing in third place for Lisa Rasmussen of Murray Bridge.
Wonder Whirl is trained by Mick Giniotis at Two Wells for Keith Watson. Keith bought “Dakota” as a young pup and rated her as the best of the five greyhounds he has raced, despite them all having won at city tracks. He was very happy with the win, as he said the trainer was looking to put her in an “easy” race, but noticed she was in an Open grade field.
Keith said Dakota needs to be near the front early to do her best, which she was able to do today, bringing her total wins to 19 with 13 placings from 52 starts. Included in those results were recent runs in the finals of the SA Oaks and the SA Sprint, run at Angle Park. Keith enjoys the racing scene and gets attached to his greyhounds, and is considering the possibility of breeding with Wonder Whirl in the future. Based on her performances that might be a worthwhile consideration.
It was up to the women again to provide the only doubles on the day. Kim Johnstone was first away with Oxygen Bandit and Permitted, while Wendy Matcott’s double came with Lektra Joker and Lektra Wren.
Racing next week is on Tuesday afternoon and also an afternoon meeting on Friday 7th
