At the Gawler greyhound track on Sunday night, two heats of a paid up Series for young greyhounds was run, which will lead into a Final next week. This race which is part of a series of several special events for those eligible greyhounds, is run over the 400m trip. This gives a short distance option for trainers, as the main races in the Series will be run over the 500m distance.

The first heat saw Uncle Ray, which jumped from box 1, go straight to the front and was then challenged on its outside by Midnight Sebon (2). Uncle Ray maintained the lead, with a further challenge coming from Far More Crazy (4) around the back turn, but Uncle Ray was clear and ran on to finish with 1½ lengths in hand, in a good time of 22.99 secs. Far More Crazy made up a lot of ground late in the race to finish second for Des Hockley of Lewiston, with Midnight Sebon in third spot for Tony Nobes of Lewiston.

In the second of the heats, there was a keen tussle for the early lead, with Crazy Diva (1), She’s Amigo (3) and Isla Gracie (4) all vying for that spot. The field suddenly tightened, and Crazy Diva was then left in front, with Long Gully Corey (2) following just behind on the rails. Long Gully Corey was unable to bridge the gap, due to Crazy Diva bowling along in the lead at a very good pace, recording 22.79 secs for the race. Two lengths away, Long Gully Corey finished second for Paula Hearnden of Angaston, and Frodo Baggins (8) was third for Lisa Rasmussen of Murray Bridge.

The two winning trainers were Michael Giniotis of Two Wells, who prepares Uncle Ray, and Des Hockley with Crazy Diva. The first four runners in each heat will now be gain a run in next week’s Final, with three trainers having a pair of runners each, which will increase their chances of success.  Des Hockley will have littermates Crazy Diva and Far More Crazy, Lisa Rasmussen has Frodo Baggins and Hukanui Lady, while Tony Nobes also has a pair of littermates with Midnight Sebon and Sebon Panther.

The scene is set for an interesting Final next Sunday night, with plenty of speedy types engaged, and the box draw will be a very important factor in the outcome. The Final will be a part of a great night of racing at Gawler, so why not come along. With the popularity of the Sunday night meals, please book with the Club on 8522-2935, and we also race every Wednesday afternoon.
