GREYHOUND RACING SA INTRODUCES FUNDING FOR REMOTELY LOCATED TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA has received support for a proposal to introduce funding for remotely located trainers thanks to a pool of funds set aside for agreed racing initiatives by a handful of Clubs that have ceased operations over the past two decades.

Understanding of the impact of consolidating tracks over time, GRSA will apply those funds to the introduction of a Remote Trainer’s Fee (RTF) in assistance to active GRSA registered trainers whose registered premises are located more than 150 kilometres from their nearest accessible TAB track.

From 1 November 2019, those GRSA registered trainers will receive an additional $75 payment for every TAB race meeting in which they compete with at least one runner. The fee will be capped at one payment per registered premises per meeting and will be reviewed after two years, after which time it is expected that the funds in questions will have been exhausted.

The Club landscape in South Australia has continued to change and since 2011, that trust fund – comprising of approximately $48,000 from the Kulpara, Whyalla and Port Pirie Clubs – has been available to support ongoing operations at Port Augusta & District Greyhound Club, including support of stakemoney for the Murray Pridham Memorial each year.

Matt Corby, CEO, Greyhound Racing SA said the initiative more broadly reflects the responsibility that the sport has to support its regional communities and to make participation for remote trainers as viable as possible, noting the additional challenge that some trainers face in terms of travelling to participate.

“It’s important that GRSA registered trainers who are located remotely are supported to continue in the sport.” said Mr Corby.

“For some of those people, the drive to their nearest facility is significant. This payment will provide some relief and help them to overcome the tyranny of distance.” he said.
Additionally, from 1 November 2019, those trainers will not be charged any placement fee for retired greyhounds being entered into the Greyhound Adoption Program.
