2015 DOUG PAYNE SA BRED FEATURE – REVIEW
The 2015 SA Bred Doug Payne Feature was run last night at Angle Park in front of a generous crowd. The feature race was meant to be run in December of last year however with insufficient nominations the race was moved to January. In January there were also insufficient nominations and was shifted to last night.
Fittingly for the Doug Payne Feature which has a rich history, the event drew together a crack line up of some of the best SA bred chasers going around in South Australia all keen to win the prestigious race and claim the $6,000 first prize.
In form chasers Coorong Kid for Cameron Butcher and Sunday Shoes for Nathan Wilson were sent out as equal favourites with Coorong Kid’s kennel mate Worm Burner, also tight in the market. However as the boxes flew open, kennel mates Paddy McBain and Gun McBain showed a clean pair of paws to lead on the first turn. Trained by Todd Kelly they are both out of the same mother, the highly successful Flame McBain with “Gun” by Spring Gun and “Paddy” just over a year younger by Kinloch Brae. They both set up a handy break down the back straight with the remainder of the field giving chase. The kennel mates settled down to fight it out while Sunday Shoes and Scottish Thistle battled out third. As they hit the finishing line Paddy McBain was comfortably holding his more highly credentialed half brother and reigning SA Greyhound of the Year, Gun McBain, to go on and win by 2 ½ lengths in a handy 29.85. Sunday Shoes secured third spot with only 4 lengths back to last place highlighting the quality and evenness of the race.
Paddy McBain took his record to 9 wins and 14 placings from 39 starts and prizemoney of just over $16,000. This was his first start in open company and he looks like he can take the next step into the big time following in the footsteps of his big brother.
The 2016 Doug Payne SA Bred Feature will be run in November/December later this year and it promises to be another outstanding race.
