Doug Payne SA Bred Feature Review
DOUG PAYNE SA BRED FEATURE
Last night’s racing at Angle Park was highlighted by the 13th running of the Doug Payne SA Bred Feature named in honour of one of the legends of greyhound racing in Australia, Doug Payne. Doug trained the first three Adelaide Cups to be run in 1972, 73 and 74 in addition to winning a record 14 training premierships in SA. He is only one of three South Australians inducted into the Australian Greyhound Racing Hall of Fame with the other two being Brian Johnstone and Howard Ashton. This race is much sort after with past winners being outstanding SA Bred chasers such as Thorpedo McLaren, Lion Hearted, Brute Bernard and last years winner Fire Tyson. Fire Tyson was shooting for back to back wins with the Tony Lagana trained speedster sent out the warm favourite. Pandora Kist for Peter Hurley jumped to the front early and gave the high quality field something to chase. Springvale Cool and Fire Tyson were in hot pursuit into the back straight with Right Time steadily making ground from the rear of the field. As heads turned for home Pandora Kist lead with both Fire Tyson and Right Time issuing strong challengers and in the drive to the line Right Time for Cameron Butcher claimed the prize by a head from Pandora Kist with Fire Tyson a length away in third place. Right Time ran a slick 29.91 for the 515m journey and looks to be right back to his best after consecutive wins. Doug Payne’s granddaughter and great granddaughter Evelyn was on hand to present the trophy and rug to Cameron Butcher with the face fittingly one of the best we have seen in recent times at Angle Park.
