A lot of the time greyhound racing is viewed in a very similar way with the other two racing codes but Darren Camoreale’s story as a greyhound trainer symbolises why greyhound racing is so different compared to the other two racing codes. Darren works a full time job and has his kennel based at his house in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. On Monday Night Darren took the only two greyhounds he trains to the races at Angle Park and both of them came away winners. This would be Darren’s first ever double as a trainer.

Darren got his first taste of greyhound racing twenty-five years ago when he was in a syndicate through popular greyhound personality Ray Borda. Since then Darren took a strong interest in the sport. He got his trainers license a few years back but took a little time off due to work commitments. He has really got back into training and racing on a regular basis over the last twelve months. Darren mentioned how much his wife and his family have helped him juggle the greyhounds and his work life.

Darren’s double on Monday kicked off his double in race five with his greyhound Our Winnie who only recently joined his kennel. Darren stated “she actually surprised me a little bit. I thought she could be competitive from box six since she likes to be drawn off the track. The way she pushed through and hit the line was really encouraging. She is definitely on the improve and I think there is a few more wins in store for her”. Monday night was also a new personal best time over 342 meters for Our Winnie running a time of 19.77.

Darren’s second winner happened later in the night in race eleven with Fabulous Ebony scoring win seven at start number eighteen. Darren stated that he is “absolutely stoked with her”. I had her at my house from when she was 16 months old. To see her get better and better has been really exciting. She is the best greyhound I’ve trained and I’ve been really wrapped with her so far”. Fabulous Ebony also ran a new personal best time over 342 meters running 19.58.

Darren only trains the two greyhounds at the moment but he does have a third kennel at his facility. Training three greyhounds would be his limit but he didn’t rule out the possibility of adding a third greyhound to his team. As far as the near future is concerned Darren has both of his greyhounds engaged at Gawler this Sunday Night.
