A good crowd was on hand to see the running of the 2013 Christmas Cup Sprint at Angle Park yesterday at the Boxing Day Twilight meeting. The field was of the highest quality with all 8 greyhounds given a real hope of winning the last feature for 2013. Shortly after the start the race however looked to be a one act affair with Kalden Gambino for Troy Murray jumping brilliantly from box 2 to lead easily on the first turn in a slick 4.43 first split. The remaining 7 runners were all in a line behind, all trying to get around the first turn, unfortunately Encosta Kahn received a severe check and fell to the ground hard with concerns for his well being. Subsequently he was found to have sustained an injury and in good news for connections should be able to return to the race track. Down the back straight Kalden Gambino was in full flight opening up a break from his rivals with Right Time for Cameron Butcher in hot pursuit and Fire Tyson for Tony Lagana winding up after a slow beginning. As heads turned for home Kalden Gambino was in no danger and went on to record a brilliant victory in a sizzling 29.76 in winning by 5 ¼ lengths from Fire Tyson who flashed home for second with Right Time a further length away in third spot. Kalden Gambino won a heat of the SA Derby and was third in the final behind Ernie Bung Arrow back in September and after a short stint back in WA he looks to have returned to SA in fine form and looks a main player for the feature races coming up in the next few months.
