Brenda Oakey Scores a Double On Wednesday
Wednesday
Brenda Oakey had a good day at Gawler on Wednesday with a training double from two of her chasers. Fawn Charger (Orson Allen x Heading My Way) broke his maiden status with a nice effort from box four over the 400m trip. He wasn’t the best away and found himself a few lengths off the early leader. Before the home turn he still spotted the leader 5 lengths but was starting to get into his work. A frantic finish from the 26kg dog saw him storm over the top late for a good victory. The impressive Fizzy Crest found herself well in for a 1-3 win race over the 400m journey and capitalised on that with a hot win. The fawn bitch drew well with box two and thanks to the best start of her career, she found an easy lead and it was race over from there. She strolled home for a slick 22.70 victory which was a new personal best for her.
He’s All Purpose had his first start back in South Australia since returning from a successful Queensland campaign and he returned with a bang, proving a dominant winner over the short trip. After receiving plenty of market support, he flew out from box three and never looked back, winning comprehensively with a 22.71 gallop. His owner and trainer Tim Richards, also had another winner in the form of Crush Your Enemy who took out the race prior. He had box six for the 400m event and began well, finding himself just off the lead. He covered plenty of ground out wide, but in the end proved too strong as he got over the top in 22.81.
The Daniel Grgurovic trained Little Sophia has only had a couple of starts in South Australia but landed a fantastic win on Wednesday from box three. A quick first split of 8.75 allowed her to find the front and from there she proved simply dynamite, proving too fast for the others with a 2 length win in 22.90. The kennel has been going well lately and if Little Sophia keeps those sort of box manners together then she will be winning a few more yet!
Friday
It was a strong card for the Friday program at Gawler and it was a good day for trainer Angela Modra, who had two winners. Sutton Prince was first up and he put in an excellent effort to take out the fastclass race for the afternoon. From box four he came out flying and ran an airborne 8.55 to the first mark, which is simply as fast as they go. He got a bit tired late but had done more than enough as he won in 22.70, which given the wet track was very good. A few races later with the rain had well and truly set in, but Sutton Ranger was able to go nearly as well, with a fast effort from box seven over the 400m trip. He came out running and led easily, before going on with it and winning well in 22.77. A good day for the Modra team!
Des Hockley had a fantastic day too with two of his own winners. Runs Like Bluey found himself in the Juvenile event of the day over 400m but with a good draw in box two. He started well which allowed him to find an early lead and he travelled strongly in front. A challenger appeared as they turned for home but ‘Bluey’ was a tad too good with the white and black bitch holding on in 23.13. It was a long wait to the last, but the brother Mac Frenzy made it two for the afternoon, when he won from box eight in a slightly slower 23.19.
You will struggle to find many chasers going better in the state right now than Emerley Wiggum and he continued his strong form with a best of day 22.68 victory from box two over the short trip. He drew much better than his recent starts, and with a clean beginning, he landed in second and when the leader shifted up going down the back straight, things were looking quite good for Emerley Wiggum. He powered through to the front before the turn and strolled away, winning by 2 lengths for his trainer Grame Stirling.
Another good week of racing with the next meeting this Wednesday.
