Tuesday (Straight Track)

11 interesting races up the Straight Track last week, following a ripping Cup night.

Don Turner got the meeting started with his stunning looking chaser Basso’s Choice. It was a four dog maiden and Basso’s Choice had drawn well in box 6, however when the lids opened he was in a bit of bother and squeezed back to last. He showed a touch of class by dropping back towards the rail before storming home and winning very nicely in 17.14. Don then made it a double for the day in race 3 with his black dog Fifty Eight making the most of box 1, to win with a strong run home. The end time of 16.89 is quite impressive given the slow first split.

Bec Romyn took out the other maiden on the card with her first starter Yip Yap winning with ease. The market proved quite telling with Yip Yap being truckload to start $1.20, punters had a couple anxious moments when Yip Yap drifted out and bumped a few times, but he was far too good and clocked a neat 16.99.

Spring Flora has taken to the Straight Track unbelievably well and she affirmed her love for the place on Tuesday when she rocketed up the 350m trip in 19.20. She is one of the biggest bitches in the country, weighing in at 34kg so it’s no surprise to see her take a liking to the track. Her win in the grade 6 final was dynamic, finding a bit of bother early before taking over quickly mid race and holding a comfortable lead at the end.

Up There Billy added to his amazing record up the Straight Track when he took out the last in a BOD 16.73. It was a comfortable watch for the $1.50 favourite, leading all the way. Jack Trengove is having a terrific run with him and it doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon.

Dog to follow: Andy Time - Got a motor this dog and the run on Tuesday was excellent. He didn’t step overly quickly but mustered terrifically to hit a gap and get to the front, but was just run down in the last stride by Fly For Trix. Andy Time will continue to get better with runs here and he will be winning very soon.

Friday (1-Turn)

Astonia Rose took out the first of the meeting, with her third career start. It’s clear to see that she has any amount of early pace, already breaking the 5 second first split in two of her three starts. It was a relatively comfortable watch for her backers as she led the entire trip in 4.95-22.52. A deserved win for a bitch with a promise. Bob Harris who trains Astonia Rose, then took out race two with the sister Singin’ Jules who was also on debut. She seems to have inherited the same early speed, as she also led all the way with a 5.02-22.69 effort. Well done to Bob and both the sisters, hopefully many more wins ahead!

Cameron Butcher continued his terrific run, with two electric winners on Friday. Jack’s Well was monstrous on route to his 29.64 win over the 530m trip, which didn’t come as any surprise off the back of his Murray Bridge Cup run. Rosie Red then flew in race 7, breaking the 22 second mark over the short trip, running 4.96-21.92. Both of these runs were flying and no surprise to see they were BOD efforts for their respective journeys. Not sure where they go now, but both of these dogs are clearly airborne and Cameron has got them humming.

Ben Rawlings also had an enjoyable day out with two impressive winners from two promising young pups in his care. I’m Gifted Too looked really nice in taking out race three with a quick 5.03-22.26 run, after having to work early. Impeached then rolled a hot favourite in Lot Of Poise, by using box 1 to rail and lead before simply being too strong in the run home, winning in 25.52. I’ve got a bit of time for Impeached and think he has a really nice future ahead. The win on Friday made it 3 wins from 4 starts, which includes a luckless second on debut.

Dog to follow: It’s Your Shout - He’s been really good in his three runs back from a little spell and was just beaten by a better dog on Friday. I would suggest he goes around in a grade 6 next week and the way he’s going, I don't think he will be getting beaten.
