GRSA ANIMAL WELFARE ALERT - GASTROINTESTINAL ILLNESS
7 January 2020
Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) is notifying participants of a recent outbreak interstate of gastrointestinal illness amongst the greyhound population. Whilst GRSA is not currently aware of any cases in this state, participants are reminded about the need to closely monitor the health of greyhounds in their care and ensure that good kennel hygiene is practised at all times.
Trainers are advised to monitor their greyhounds for the two most common signs of gastroenteritis, those being vomiting and diarrhea. Additional signs to watch for include:
• Dehydration due to fluid loss through vomiting or diarrhea
• Blood in vomit or faeces
• Nausea
• Depression
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
Participants who suspect a greyhound of having any gastrointestinal issues should immediately isolate the greyhound, disinfect their kennels and contact their veterinarian for advice.
