TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The highlight of tonight’s racing must be the 3 strong semis of the Howard Ashton series, which are races 5 to 7 on the programme, they are certainly wide open so it will make for a very interesting final here at headquarters next week. We have a massive 12 events tonight so it makes for an interesting night of punting. The kennel to follow looks to be the Ben Rawlings team.

Race 1 and we can kick off with the Robyn Mackellar trained Mepunga Georgia out in box 6, she only needs an ounce of luck early to give this a big shake. Marley Bale is a lot better than last start and will be the improver. Box Up 3.5.6.7.

Race 2 - Gee, he went close here last week and that is Hurucan, he finished a terrific 2nd and gets another chance to break through in a similar field. Amity Marlow is in fine form and is drawn to kick up on the rails. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 3 - The Janice Jones sprinter High Eden Snow is very capable when on song and he has a terrific strike rate at this venue so we will put him on top. Shimatron didn’t give a yelp here last start but can’t be overlooked. Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Race 4 - This is a terrific betting race as all the main chances have drawn poorly, I will stick with Regal Looper from box 4, he has been in the money in 3 of his past 4 starts and will be doing his best work late. Hesa Jayclo could be the smokey at odds as he has the perfect draw. Box up 1.3.4.6.

Race 5 - The first of the Howard Ashton semis and Victa Ollie has the early pace to split these early and looks the measuring stick. Yoe was a massive run here last start and proved too strong in the run home at big odds winning in 30.11. Add Slipper Wish who loves to fill a place. Box up 1.3.4.5.

Race 6 - There look to be 2 main chances in this and they are Deputy Speaker and Whackin Theo both can run handy times when on the lure so they are a must for our trifecta. The value runners are Springvale Cooke and Burst of Hope who can run into the placings. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 7 - Crunchin Numbers has won his last 5 here and Gawler and looks well drawn to continue on his winning way. Farmin made good ground when finishing 2nd here and the Lauren Harris kennel is on fire of late so he can’t be overlooked.  Add Dawning Hope who is hit and miss on box rise but is very strong. Box Up 2.3.5.8.

Race 8 - How could we go past the Cameron Butcher flying machine in On Fire out in box 8, he has won his past 4 starts here all in slick time and as mentioned last week he is the best sprinter by far at the moment.  Allen Terminator returned to the winners circle here last week winning in good time so we must put him in the First Four, my value runner is Zipping Gator who will be rattling home late. Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 9 - This is a terrific 600m event and the book ends in Purpose Driven and Allen Oregon are the inform runners, both have different racing styles so who gets the early break will have a big say in the final outcome. We can’t dismiss Caprice Monelli who is a proven distance performer. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 10  - We tipped him 2 starts back from the same draw and that is Raven Sky, he found early trouble in that run but he can bounce back from that defeat and score in this. Relton mixes his form and is very capable when out in front and he should be at each way odds. Box Up 1.2.6.7.

Race 11 - The Rasmussen kennel doesn’t normally go home empty handed and they look to have a winner with Canya Sassy from box 1 in this, she loves the inside and will be very hard to beat for mine. Kung Fu Mary has a good early pace and appears the main danger. Box Up 1.3.4.6.

Race 12 - We go home on a very open affair and when in doubt go with the box draw so we will tip Cash For Jam, he won 2 on the trot last month in good fashion and looks well suited in this. Mauricio is a handy type who has early dash so he can’t be dismissed from his draw of 7. Box Up 1.6.7.8.

GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON SEMI FINALS TONIGHT

There are three terrific semi finals tonight for the Group 3 Howard Ashton after 6 heats were run last Wednesday at Angle Park.

Heat winners were –

Crunchin Numbers- 30.25

Usain’s Squeeze – 30.58

Whackin’ Theo – 30.19

Yoe– 30.11

Deputy Speaker – 30.39

Dawning Hope – 30.20

With plenty of form in each semi final an upset result could be on the cards if some of the favourites are not on their game tonight as each greyhound looks to qualify for next week’s Final.

As there are three Semi-Finals the first two from each semi final and two fastest thirds will qualify for next weeks final. The box draw will take place on track tonight, following race 8.

The 2017 Howard Ashton Final is a Group 3 event, with total prizemoney of $37,500. It is the main race series of Breeders 2017.

GAWLER BREEDERS 2017 MOVED TO JULY 16 AND 23

After the Howard Ashton Final the final race in the Breeders 2017 pay up series is the Gawler Breeders 2017 in June.

However due to the cross over with the Auction Final GRSA has decided to move this series back into July to avoid a clash. The series was to be run on Sunday 11th and 18th June however this will now be conducted on Sunday 16th and 23rd July. This avoids the Auction and Gawler Produce series.

GROUP 1’s AT SANDOWN TONIGHT

It will be a big night at Sandown tonight with the running of three Group 1 events. The Group 1 Harrison Dawson over the 515m (race 5 at 8.07pm), Sapphire Crown Final over 515m (race 7 at 8.46pm) and the $150,000 to the winner Sandown Cup Final over the 715m (race 8 at 9.10).

It is one meeting not to be missed and you can catch all the action at Angle Park tonight.

TIME GRADING UPDATE

GRSA has been working at achieving some of the outcomes from the recent Grading Review Panel meeting held on 28th April 2017.

Some items like cascading reserves need to be implemented by Ozchase however some do not. For the next Time Grading meeting held at Angle Park on Wednesday 31st May (Nominations close at 9am tomorrow (Friday 26th May) we will be able to include greyhounds with 0 – 2 starts so every greyhound nominated will be eligible for consideration. The table below details the rating for 0-2 start greyhounds -

“A greyhound with 0 starts will be given a rating of 10 as a starting point. At its second start it will have the average of 10 and its first start. At its third start, it will be the average of the 2 lowest ratings, including the base rating of 10. ie if had 12, 12 from 2 starts, it will be 10 + 12 / 2 = 11”

SHANE MCQUEEN MEMORIAL IN EARLY JUNE

The main 600m feature at Angle Park comes up on Thursday 1st June with the running of the $4,990 heats of the Shane McQueen Memorial.

This series has always been well supported by the Industry with 3 or 4 heats normally run. The Final will be held on Thursday 8th June and will be worth $8.565.

  • Nominations close on Monday 29th May with GRSA at 9.00am.

GREYHOUND AUCTION MAIN SERIES – June 8 and 15

Please also note that there will be a $4,590 Consolation on Thursday 15th June for those that did not qualify for the final however trainers will need to renominate to be considered.

PETER BRYCE FROM WINNING POST SUPPLIES IN ADELAIDE

Peter Bryce from Winning Post Supplies will be attending the Gawler meetings on Sunday 28th & Tuesday 30th May and the Angle Park meetings on Monday 29th May & Wednesday 1st June.

LURE TRIALS – NEXT STAGE

The team recently purchased some sheepskins which have been dyed to the required blue, yellow and white colours. From these skins, a lure has been created as similar to the existing lure as possible.

Trialling of this lure will occur at the following trial sessions at Angle Park:

  • Saturday 20th May, 2017 (Free)
  • Saturday 27th May, 2017 (Free)

Following these trials and after gaining feedback from participants, GRSA will look to undertake trials at other tracks to give all participants the option to trial behind the lure. However this will only occur once there is a general view that the design is suitable for racing and trialling and no more modifications are necessary.

It is expected that once a determination on the lure type has been finalised, the possibility of a longer lure arm will be explored via a very similar process.

PRIZEMONEY EMAILS

With a change to who is sending out the email advise from GRSA to participants we are finding some participants are not easily finding the email correspondence.

Can participants please check the following:

 A)     Check your Junk folder

B)     Look out for Jenny instead of Julie

C)     Save the email address to your address book

It might keep happening week to week if you don’t mark the email address as recognised/safe. If participants have further issues please contact GRSA.

GOTBA NEWS

After consultation with the GOTBA some of their races have reverted back to 8 dog events rather than all 4 dog events as was conducted for their first two meetings. With the Club receiving strong nominations the below criteria has been agreed for their meetings –

  • Juvenile, Juvenile/Maidens and Maidens (that have not won on the circle will all be graded as 4 dog events). This will protect the more inexperienced greyhounds.
  • Maidens (that have won 1 or more races on the circle), Novice, 1 stake, open etc will be graded as 8 dog events

This is all still dependent upon nominations received. The club will run 16 dog events for the Waterloo Cup, Oaks and Derby as per normal, depending upon nominations.

The GOTBA’s next meeting will be on Sunday 11th June.

BOOKING ON LINE FOR SATURDAY MORNING TRIALS AT ANGLE PARK

GRSA introduced the Online Booking process for Saturday morning trials recently. Bookings will be taken as per normal by phone and online at 12.30pm on the Thursday before.

Trials on Saturday mornings start at 7.00am as normal with 25 minute blocks likely to go to around 10.30am. GRSA will monitor the bookings and attendance and may vary conditions and timeslots as required.

After the most recent ICG meeting GRSA will implement online bookings for trials at Gawler on Wednesday nights. This should happen in the next month. Full details will be provided once the setup is completed.

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THURSDAY’S

GRSA has been able to secure the services of Kurt Donsberg for Thursday nights oncourse photography.
