TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

With the weather still bitterly cold one thing we can look forward to is the racing here at headquarters tonight, we have 2 heats of the 2018 Crocmedia National Sprint State series and 1 heat over the 731m. All 3 races have their fair share of talent and the winners of next weeks finals will get to represent SA in Victoria later this month.

Race 1 - The Rasmussen kennel should have a big night and they can kick off with an early winner with the classy Menzali down in box 4, he has won 6 from 9 at this venue including a win here in 29.71 2 runs back he should lead and win. Hukanui fell here last start and will be better suited this grade, he will be running on strongly along with Purpose Driven. Box Up 2.4.7.8.

Race 2 - Troy Murray looks to have a handy one in Reiko Rocketta, she led them a merry dance here last start from box 5 and should be able to do the same again from the wide draw. Allen Paul is ultra-consistent and will add value to our First Four as will the well-drawn Talitha Cumi. Box Up 1.3.6.7.

Race 3 - This is the heat of the 2018 National Distance State series and its very hard to go past Zudactyl Monelli out in box 8, he has won his past 3 here all in good times and looks the measuring stick once again. Cairnlea Jet showed a bit of cheek here last start when a handy 2nd and could be the improver. Box Up 4.6.7.8.

Race 4 - The outside brigade are the main chances in this as they both have a good turn of early pace, both have won over this trip and they should run the quinella. Add Who Said That who is yet to win here over the 600m in 17 attempts but has run into the placings 11 times, he is a must for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.6.7.

Race 5 - The 1st of the heat of the National Sprint and Honcho Monelli can bounce back from his defeat here last start when he missed the start but flew late to run a very good 3rd. Aston Abbott is very smart when on the lure and will be right in the finish along with Rachel Zane and Victor Dora. Box Up 2.4.5.7.

Race 6 - The 2nd of the National Sprint heats and Nations is a class performer with a clear run he has been freshened since winning here early last month in a slick 29.69 and he appears one of the main chances. Cairnlea Kenny won here last Thursday and should run another big race from his wide draw. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 7 - Now this is a wide open affair so the Trifecta will be well worth getting, I like the well-drawn Dyna Vagrant down on the fence, he has struggled here recently from wide draws and tonight he drops back in grade. Game Face is more than capable on his night and has his paw on the till so he is a must as is Prophetess and Ready To Mingle for value. Box Up 1.4.5.6.

Race 8 - Alpha Aion was never in the hunt here last start when unplaced after finding early trouble, he should start the punters elect but he needs to improve his box manners. Wait There loves a wide draw and will come out running, he won here 2 starts back in 29.90 and is a chance of pinching this at each way odds. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 9 - With the 5 runners over the 600m here its very hard to go past the Gregory Board trained Spring Bloom, she can be tardy early but will be doing her best work late so we will put her on top. Aiming and Shot Thru can fill the placings. Box up 1.2.4.6.

Race 10 - I like the inside 4 here as they all have been racing well, Oh Jay Korie can top off a big night for the Rasmussen kennel if he salutes in this, he has been very consistent since crossing the border and is drawn for a bold showing. Dream Breaker and Spring King will be running on and Love Made Me has terrific Gawler form. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

2018 CROCMEDIA SA NATIONAL STATE HEATS

Tonight we see the running of the SA heats for the 2018 Crocmedia Nationals Series. Ay close of nominations there were 12 greyhounds for the Sprint Series and 9 for the Distance.  There are 2 Heats of the Sprint Series and 1 Heat for the Distance tonight at headquarters.

A high quality field lines up in the SA Distance series which features Zudactyl Monelli, Cairnlea Jet, Springvale Choix and San Tan Sam. As there is only one heat all the runners will progress through to next Thursday nights State Final.

In the Sprint Series, the main chances look to be Honcho Monelli and Aston Abbott from heat 1 while in heat 2 Nations does battle with Cairnlea Kenny. The first four from each heat will qualify for next weeks State Final in what looks a high quality series.

The box draws for the Crocmedia State Finals will be conducted on track tonight, following the Heats. The Distance draw will take place after race 4 and the Sprint draw will be conducted after race 7.

A reminder that ALL states will be conducting their Sprint & Distance Finals next Thursday night. From 7.30pm local time to 9.30pm local time there will be full coverage including previews on Sky Racing 2 with normal coverage on Sky Racing 1. It makes for a great promotion of the series.

The National Finals this year will be held at Sandown in Victoria to be conducted on Friday, 24th August. Both the National Sprint and National Distance Finals will carry prizemoney of $75,000 to the winner.

TRAINERS FEE PAID UPSTAIRS TONIGHT

Due to staffing the Trainers Fee will be paid upstairs tonight in the Bistro Bar in Chaser’s Restaurant.

The Race Night Office will be open until about 8.30pm for fields and results to be collected but will be unmanned.

The final race in the Auction series for those greyhounds bought through the 2016 Greyhound Auction will be $1,990 heats on Monday, 13th August at Angle Park with the $5,000 final on Monday, 20th August.
*Nominations for the heats close on Wednesday, 8th August with GRSA at 9.00am.*

OAKS AND DERBY ELIGIBILITY IN 2018

The Group 3 SA Oaks and SA Derby to be run in September this year will be for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2016 (27 months) which has stayed the same as last year.
GRSA has left the eligibility date at 27 months in support of trainers, breeders and owners of young up and coming greyhounds however it is important that this series is supported by our local participants. If the series is not supported with nominations locally and from Interstate then GRSA will have no option but to alter the age restriction to 30 months to ensure sufficient support for these races in 2019. To support these series’ GRSA has changed the heats of the Oaks to be run on the same night as the Derby with heats on Thursday 13th September and the Group 3 finals on Thursday 20th September.

UBET STATE OF ORIGIN MATCH RACE SERIES IN LATE SEPTEMBER

GRSA has introduced an exciting new feature “State of Origin” Match Race series sponsored by UBET in a lead up to the Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup on Thursday, 29th September where 4 greyhounds from SA will take on 4 greyhounds from Victoria in one on one racing.
As a lead up to the Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup we get many Victorian trainers travel across the border to race but mainly trial their greyhounds so their greyhound becomes familiar with the surroundings before competing in the Group 1 heats.  This is a great opportunity for SA to introduce a State of Origin Match Race series which will provide promotion, wagering and a terrific opportunity for the local and Interstate greyhounds to have a decent hit out prior to the series.

Conditions of the series:
The State of Origin Match Race series between South Australia and Victoria will be held on Thursday, 27th September this year, the week before the Adelaide Cup heats.

It will be the week of the AFL Grand Final so we may be able to tap into the SA verses Victoria rivalry particularly if Port Power or Adelaide Crows are in the Grand Final against a Victorian opponent. Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or Victoria would be based around the Nationals conditions. Greyhounds would need to be trained in either State 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the close of nominations.

GRSA will call for nominations which will close on Friday morning, 23rd September at 9am for the State of Origin Match Race series. The best four greyhounds nominated from SA and Victoria will be selected by the GRSA grader. The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds. The Graders decision will be final. Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night.

The Grader will rate the four greyhounds from each State in order from 1 to 4 with 1 being the highest rated greyhound. The head to head matches will be decided by the two 1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4. Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect 1 to 4 with the 1 rated greyhounds receiving the most amount of money. However the overall winner will still be determined based around the times the greyhounds run so all greyhounds have that opportunity.

PRIZEMONEY:
Winners of match races –
1 v 1 – Winners $3,750
2 v 2 –  Winner $3,500
3 v 3 –  Winner $3,250
4 v 4 –  Winner $3,000
Overall State of Origin winner (based on overall times) $5,000, second $2,500, third $1,000

SCHEDULE & WAGERING:
This race would be race 4 on the program (outside of the Quadrella). It will make up 1 race on the 11 event card of racing. Race 4 will make up a field of the 8 greyhounds with 4 match races to be run around 10 minutes apart (total of 30 minutes).  UBET are sponsoring and are fully supportive of this concept from a wagering perspective. For tote purposes they will have the full suite of single race betting options and it makes for a perfect fixed odds bet type. Sky Racing has also provided their support around the concept.

PRIZEMONEY INCREASES FOR ANGLE PARK (CITY A) THURSDAY FROM JULY 1

As of July 1, Thursday Night Angle Park stakemoney across all grades has increased by 5%, reflecting the key role that the premier weekly meeting plays in attracting the highest quality outcomes from local breeding and interstate acquisitions.

This will also benefit some of our feature events that will increase on Thursday nights.

TRAINERS TO RECEIVE $20 FROM 1ST JULY TO REPLACE $15 UNPLACED

The existing $15 unplaced payment that currently applies to a majority of SA greyhound races will be replaced by a new $20 Trainer Raceday Subsidy (TRS) from 1st July with 100% of that payment being allocated directly to trainers.

For clarity, this payment will be made in addition to the $60 trainer rebate and will be allocated to unplaced greyhounds under circumstances wherein the $15 payment would have previously applied. Unplaced payments of more than $20 will remain the same.

PARTICIPANT DRESS CODE

Stewards remind participants to ensure they comply with all requirements of the GRSA Dress Code when attending race meetings when involved in racing.

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Recently Kurt was able to extend his roster to not only do Thursday night meetings at Angle Park but also the Monday night and Wednesday day meetings, however, due to personal commitments he is unable to do Monday nights until later in the year. Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required, gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the Stewards on the day for access.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building. It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.
