TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Last week was a tough night for punters and greyhound followers alike with several roughies greeting the judge.  Tonight’s meeting has several races that are very open and it’s a chance for us all to bounce back.

Race 1 and there is a heap of early pace and most of it is down on the rails.  Yasi Girl showed a glimpse when leading here last start with a fading 3rd.  Add in Ever To Be who was a last start winner at Horsham along with Noble Kahn who is flying of late.  Box Up 1-2-6-8.

Race 2 and Victa Nicole had a very good run at Gawler when a last start 2nd behind Dee Dee Corsair in a smart 30.93 and looks well placed in this despite the ordinary draw of 4.  Arneis and Agent Kahn will all be in the mix.  Box Up 1-4-5-8.

Next race on the card is a 600m event and jump on the Todd Kelly trained Fair Change.  She loves a wide draw and flew home here last start from this draw to run 2nd behind Dyna Aline in 35.23.  She looks hard to beat.  Box up 2-3-4-8.

Race 4 and the Ex WA performer in Ya Ya Bing will be right in this on his first up Gawler win in 31.08.  He has pace and is boxed to win for Mike Giniotis.  The main dangers are Full Beer Fridge and the pacey Disco Dave.  Box Up 1-2-3-6.

Cosmic Way is returning from a short spell and was in fine form prior with 4 wins from his 5 runs all in quick times.  He should sprint well fresh in Race 5 and looks the one they have to beat.  Victa Sam has been around the mark and will be right in the trifecta.  Cawbourne Jet has the draw and could be the smokey if there is trouble early.  Box Up 1-3-6-7.

Race 6 and this looks a 2 dog race with Wild Soul and Nasty Ned.  They only finished a .5L apart last week but have different racing styles, with one a quick beginner and the other who will be charging home.  Add in Robin Rain and First Call for the pick 4.  Box Up 1-2-3-8.

Race 7 is a tough race and for mine, there look to be at least 4 chances and the interesting runner is White Air for Petar Jovanovic who made his SA debut with a 2nd over the short course here last start.  The former NSW performer is sure to be well tried here and gets the nod for mine.  Box Up 2-3-7-8. Good Luck in this one.

Race 8 and this is a TOP race.  Victa Brooke has the perfect draw in 1 and she did beat Flying Tee here last start in 29.97.  She should prove too strong.  Benchmark blitzed his rivals in the Adelaide Cup Consolation two runs back and is the Big Danger.  Box Up 1-2-4-5.

This is the Distance Race tonight and Fender can bounce back and break-through.  He has been around the mark of late and appears well placed.  John Gale has a two pronged attack and both will be running on and they love the 700m journey.  Box Up 1-2-4-7.

Race 10 and this is a very tough affair to pick a winner.  Box Up 1-3-4-7.

The last event and jump on Specialised for the Mackellar kennel.  He has hit form since transferring to SA and both his wins have been from this draw in handy times.  Fitzy Allen is well drawn down in box 1 but is hit or miss on box rise.  Box Up 1-3-4-6.

Good Luck..

NO TRIALS AT ANGLE PARK DUE TO GAWLER CUP HEATS

With the Gawler club being able to secure this Tuesday night for their Gawler Cup heats there will be no trials conducted at Angle Park.

CHAMPION GREYHOUND “KALDEN MAYHEM” RETIRES

Last week one of the modern day champions of SA greyhound racing retired on the eve of his 5th birthday. 2011 Greyhound of the Year Kalden Mayhem was retired by connections after a stellar career mostly under the guidance of Troy Murray. He raced on 123 occasions for 58 wins and 30 placings and prizemoney just under $200,000. He was able to be brilliant over all distances with highlights no doubt being the John Gray Memorial in January 2011 when he ran a blistering 29.36 over the 515m which was quicker than Kilty Lad who won the Group 1 Adelaide Cup on the same night, his Gawler Cup win in 2011 when he produced one of the runs of the year to capture victory and his third placing in the Group 1 2011 National Distance Championship Final at Albion Park behind superstar Dashing Corsair. There is a terrific article on the Australian Racing Greyhound Website regarding Kalden Mayhem which is worth having a look at and I am sure all greyhound fans would like to thank Kalden Mayhem for the memories.

PORT AUGUSTA ON MELBOURNE CUP DAY

The Port Augusta Greyhound Racing Club will again have a Non TAB meeting on Melbourne Cup Day Tuesday 5th November. This is a great day for the Port Augusta Club as they get terrific numbers to their meeting on the first Tuesday in November. The meeting will feature an $800 Best 8 Open over 447m

Nominations for the meeting will close with GRSA at 9.00am on Thursday 31st October.

ANNUAL GRADING REVIEW MEETING – NOVEMBER 8

The consultation sessions at the Clubs have been completed with an excellent response especially from Mt Gambier and Strathalbyn.

Based on all the information collected an agenda will be formulated this week and sent to the Grading Review Panel next week to be discussed at the review.

2013 TOP GUN

The Cox Plate of greyhound racing will be run on Saturday night with star local sprinter Ernie Bung Arrow drawing perfectly in box 7 in the invitation only event. Ernie trialled last Saturday night at The Meadows and whilst is overall time was handy his first split was excellent and we all know what he can do when he leads. Race favourite Punch One Out trialled brilliantly and looks hard to beat however box 2 may not suit him with pressure coming from his outside.

2014 GAWLER PRODUCE STAKES

The 2014 Gawler Produce Stakes will be run by GRSA in conjunction with the Gawler Greyhound Racing Club. Once again we will offer guaranteed Final Stakemoney, which will be $20,000. The estimate for the total series prizemoney is $43,000, based on this year’s series.

In 2014 we will again be offering additional incentives for trainers to nominate. A bonus will be offered to any greyhound which can win both the Produce Stake and the Gawler Gold Cup.

The SA Bred bonus will also be continued; should the winner of the Final be SA bred, there will be a SA Bred bonus of $1,000 to the owner.

The dates for this series will be Heats on Tuesday 24th June 2014, Semi Finals on Tuesday 1st July 2014 and the Final on Sunday 6th July 2014. There will be a breeders bonus of $500 for the winner of the Final and a consolation event also.

GRSA administers the event for the Club, so all payments are to be made to GRSA. The fees are, with the one-off payment option $121.00 or the sustaining option at $33 (first), $55 (second) and $88 (Final).

Nomination Forms are now available, along with the full list of conditions and the payment schedule. We have sent out forms recently to those with eligible greyhounds as well as previous supporters of the race. If you haven’t received something already, please give Caralyn Fielden a call on 8243 7100 and she will send forms out.

Gawler will be separated into two categories with Tuesday being separate grading to both Friday and Sunday. Greyhounds will keep the same grade that they currently have when Gawler is separated. GRSA will not change a greyhounds grade ie Grade 2 goes to Grade 5 for Friday. Please be mindful of this when the implementation will begin.
