Angle Park Thursday Night Preview
TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow
We certainly have been spoilt of late with the class of runners that have been gracing the Angle Park Loam. Tonight is no exception with the running of the 2013 Schweppes Derby and a terrific supporting programme.
Race 1 and we should be able to kick off with an early winner in Dee Dee Corsair. He was a handy 2nd here last start and has the pace to lead and win. Koubek will be flying home late and looks a monty for the trifecta along with Benchmark who is the likely improver. Box Up 1-3-4-6.
Race 2 and Kim Johnstone has a handy type in Wild Soul. He has a personal best of 30.05 but his box manners are his biggest worry. Add in Tyson Willow and Bob Bale who has drawn perfectly down in box 1. Box Up 1-3-5-7.
On to race 3 and Kalden Kapone will find this more to his liking and should bounce straight to the front and win from box 4. There looks to be several chances for the placing’s so box up 4-5-6-8.
The Distance event is race 4 and looks a one way street with Kalden Mayhem. He looks the winner but will get a long way back and charge home late to score. Sheza Ten is another who can be hit and miss but is right in this from the rails draw. Add in Dyna Aline who is the likely leader for the top 3. Box Up 1-2-3-7.
Race 5, this is a handy 600m event and Cosmic Way is a more than handy pup who has only had 20 starts for 9 wins and 7 placing’s. The Cosmic Rumble chaser should lead and win from box 2. There looks to be several hopes for the minors and don’t leave out the Tassy performer in Camdale Buddy who will be a big improver. Box Up 2-3-6-8.
The next is race 6 and this is a good betting race with favourite Pandora Kist out in box 6 with a picket fence beside her name. I am looking to the rails in Wonder Whirl who can lead the outside brigade. Young Snozz will be running on late. Box Up 2-3-5-6.
Race 7 and this has four chances and the one I have tipped is a Tasmanian performer in the Paul Hilli kennel, Hellyeah Bolt. He made good late ground to finish 3rd last start and tonight has drawn the pole and will be the big improver. Fair Change and the pacey Fire Tyson are amongst the main chances. Box Up 1-2-5-6.
Race 8 is the main event, the Schweppes Derby final and on paper looks to be a terrific race. There is a heap of pace in this and I am going with the Victorian visitor in Tonk, for Charles Mercieca. He has only had 8 career starts for 4 wins and 4 placing’s and he charged home to run 3rd behind Ernie Bung Arrow in the heat. Box 1 is a big bonus in the final and he has a 29.44 run beside his name at Sandown from this draw two starts back. Local hope Ernie Bung Arrow was the quickest to the post here last week and has a fantastic 10 wins from 11 starts. He has the Kenny Gill polish and he can lead this for a long way. Hawk Alone has had the perfect lead up with a placing then a terrific win in 29.82 but has drawn poorly in box 5. Add in Kiss Me Ketut who is another who is more than capable for the trifecta. Box Up 1-2-4-5.
Race 9 and I have gone with a newcomer in Miss Mozoltov from WA. She has transferred into the Murray kennel and looks well suited in this event. Box Up 3-4-6-7.
Race 10 and this is another newcomer, N.S.W performer Chemical Maker with 4 wins and 9 placing’s from 22 starts. He should be well tried on his SA debut. Joja Stan is more than handy and has early pace. The draw of 4 won’t be a worry either. Box Up 2-4-7-8.
It’s always good to go home on a winning note and we can do that with Galaxy Snow in box 7. He can be hit and miss on box rise but class should prevail. Sienna Bale is an ex Victorian and has drawn the right side of the track in box 2. Now in the Lisa Rasmussen kennel and will show some cheek. Box Up 2-3-4-7.

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS
2013 SCHWEPPES DERBY TONIGHT
It was a cold and wet night last Thursday night at Angle Park however we saw four outstanding heats of the Schweppes Derby where the racing was of the highest level. The fastest qualifier for tonights final was the Andrea Dailly trained Victorian Hawk Alone who made full use of his inside box in the first heat to rail hard and lead and go on and record a strong victory in a sizzling 29.82 for the 515m. The Dailly’s will be chasing back to back SA Derby’s after their star sprinter Spud Regis won last year and then came back to Angle Park three weeks later and won the Group 1 Triple M Adelaide Cup. He is joined in the final by Kiss Me Ketut for Victorian trainer David Burnet who lost no admirers with his performance. He was wide on the track from box 7 and found a little bit of trouble however he kept coming in the straight to be beaten 6 lengths and is one of many chances tonight.
The second heat of the night got all South Australian hearts racing as local speedster Ernie Bung Arrow stepped out in what looked one of the hardest heats on paper. The Ken Gill trained flyer showed his normal brilliant speed from box 7 to comfortably lead his competition however over the final stages he was strongly challenged by Yogi Blue for Robyn Mackellar and Victorian Tonk for Charles Mercieca however he hung on gamely to record a neck victory in a brilliant 29.89. Yogi Blue finished a game second however was subject to a stewards inquiry and vetting after the last race resulting in him being ineligible for tonight. The box draw for next weeks final was subsequently held over until Friday morning resulting in Tonk who was the fastest third placegetter being drawn into the final eight and drawing the converted red box. Ernie Bung Arrow and Tonk are both SA Bred and will be shooting for a $3,500 bonus for their breeders if they can win as part of the SA Bred Super Bonus scheme.
The third heat was a terrific race with Allen Makoto for Victorian trainer Mark Delbridge just grabbing Kalden Gambino for Troy Murray in the shadows of the post to win by a head in a solid 30.06. Both greyhounds went terrific and should be further improved tonight.
The final heat was won by local hope Senni Tony for trainer Colin Swain who was able to find the early lead from box 8 and from there raced away from his rivals going on to win comfortably at the huge odds of over 40/1 in a handy 29.95. He is joined in the final by Osbourne Bale for trainer Andrea Dailly giving her two runners in the feature Group 3 event after he finished second 8 lengths away.

Please take note of the kennel times (10.45am – 11.30am) on this day as they are slightly earlier than normal.

A terrific line up of local sprinters will greet the starter tonight in the first night of local preludes for the Adelaide Cup series. Unfortunately there is only one race tonight however there is depth in each of the runners and the winner will be very hard to find.

These races are just lead in races and provide easier entry into the big one in two weeks’ time however even if you have no luck and finish out of the money it still won’t stop you from nominating for our biggest race of the year.

BOOKMAKER PETER DAMARELL ONCOURSE EVERY WEDNESDAY AT ANGLE PARK
Bookmaker Peter Damarell will be on-course every Wednesday betting competitive fixed odd markets on the full programme at Angle Park. Peter will also display all bookmaker prices from the thoroughbred meetings in South Australia and the meetings in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This is a major bonus for oncourse patrons as there will now be no need to make the long drive to Gawler, Balaklava, Murray Bridge or Strathalbyn as the very same bookmakers prices will be available at Angle Park every Wednesday. Touch screens have also been installed at Angle Park to assist with race form every meeting.
Punters can enjoy the comfort of the Angle Park betting auditorium and it’s free to get in. No more hot or cold old betting rings after a long drive. Why not give it a try?
Please tell your thoroughbred friends about this outstanding opportunity. Save your entry fee and petrol and participate in the opportunity to win a free $50 betting voucher drawn on the day with Peter Damarell’s compliments.
GAWLER TRIALS– OFFICE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS
Due to staffing issues for the next couple of weeks the Office for the Gawler trials on Wednesday’s will be closed. Scott Volbrecht will take the money for the trials at the boxes in the short term until a decision is made regarding the future of the Gawler office. Please have the correct money available to assist the race night staff. Race fields will still be available oncourse.
NEW BOOKING NUMBER FOR TRIALS
Since the introduction of the new phone system and the alteration of no menu options participants have had to ring the 8243 7100 number to book trials. This number rings on all incoming lines and congests the phone system thus causes frustration with participants and ties up all of the GRSA phone lines.
Therefore, starting on Monday 23rd September participants who wish to book trials will have to ring 8243 7172. This phone line will only be used for trial bookings and will queue participants. By having this one number with participants queuing makes this process to be a more efficient way of booking trials. There will be NO trials accepted through the normal administration number. To be fair to everyone GRSA will only accept bookings using the new number.
Please make yourself aware of the new number for booking trials.
